Lucas has to get back to work, he tells her it is a surprise.

Elizabeth is teaching her students, she writes on the board, “carpe diem,” and asks them what it means. They don’t know, so she tells them it means seize the day. While her back is turned, Cooper and Toby arrive late.

Henry stops by the jail; Nathan tells him he doesn’t have to show up. Bill walks in and says he has good news, a pre-trial hearing in two weeks and it will give them enough time to get the charges dismissed. Nathan then receives a drop-off, a dog named Scout who was cut from the training program. Bill tells Nathan it looks like Hargreaves still has it out for him. Bill then turns to Henry and asks him how long he is going to pretend everything is ok, he is looking at six years in prison and it’s a long shot. Henry says if it happens, it happens. Bill starts to cough; he shrugs it off as nothing.

Leland receives a gift from Brett, his wife made the baby a sweater.

Rupert stops by the school, he watches the other children playing and tells Elizabeth that his mom and dad got an offer on the farm, they are moving. His dad has been looking for a job and found one. His parents are going to tell Sarah tomorrow and she is going to be so upset, she loves her school.

Lucas gives Ned an order, he tells him that it is a surprise. Lucas then asks Minnie for a favor. Ned wants to know what it is, and Lucas tell him he can invite everyone tomorrow night to the saloon.

Allie walks into the jail and sees Scout and she is thrilled.

Bill is walking through town and still coughing, Faith sees him and says he got a call that he missed a doctor’s appointment.

Lee is worried, he tells Rosemary he can make payroll for a month or two, but he is worried. Elizabeth walks in and gives Rosemary her article, “A day in the life of a frontier teacher.” Elizabeth asks Lee if he needs any extra men at the mill, Richard Wolf can’t find work. Lee says he offered him a job and he turned him down flat. Elizabeth has an idea, she tells Rosemary she can loan her maternity clothes to her so they save money.

Elizabeth sits down with Bill, he tells her not to worry about his wanting to do his will, it was just housekeeping. Bill brought a kite for Jack, but it doesn’t take long for it to break.

Later, Elizabeth drops by to see Rosemary and brings the maternity clothes. Rosemary thanks her very much and says she will keep them all. When Elizabeth leaves, Rosemary tells Lee she doesn’t know what she is going to do, those are not her colors, she needs more flare. Just then, Rosemary feels the baby kicking.

Elizabeth drops by to see Lucas, he is at the saloon, she wants to go over the guest list. Afterwards it is off to school and Allie with some of the other kids arrive late and wet, Allie tells Elizabeth “Carpe Diem.”

Lee is excited about a huge contract that he might be getting when Lucas comes in and wants to pick his brain. Lucas asks Lee to be his best man, Lee says he would be honored.

Back at school, Allie asks Elizabeth if she can look at a poem she wrote, her first one and she wants to know how she can make it better. The title is “Carpe Diem,” and Elizabeth loves it, she wouldn’t change a word and tells Allie she should share it. Allie is not sure, Elizabeth wants to share it and promises not to reveal her name. Elizabeth asks what them being wet was all about. She says they found a swimming hole.

Elizabeth stops by to see Nathan and she sees Scout, she is thrilled. She sees a sketch on Nathan’s desk of Scout and when she looks closer, it reads “Adopt me.”

Elizabeth then goes to see Bill and asks if he will check out the swimming hole to see if it is safe, when he doesn’t want to, she says she will go with him.

Bill and Elizabeth check out the swimming hole just as two of the kids show up for a swim, its warm water. Bill says they might have a hot spring. Bill doesn’t like it and is going to put a no swimming sign. Elizabeth says the kids just need to get their parents’ permission. Bill is disagreeable and Elizabeth asks him what is going on. He says all the doctors can agree on is that there is something not right with his lungs. She tells him to live life in the moment, be open to new experiences, carpe diem.

At the salon, Minnie and Lucas had surplus food, so they made a community dinner complete with music. Elizabeth arrives, Lucas tells her work is not everything. Rosemary walks in wearing Elizabeth’s dress, she dyed it purple. Joseph says a few words, the last few months have no been easy, but together there is nothing they can’t accomplish. Everyone holds hands, he tells them to be thankful for community and walk humbly before God.

Back to the saloon, Allie is dancing with her dad. The wolf family is there and they get up and dance. Lee asks Elizabeth if she has chosen a matron of honor yet and Elizabeth says Rosemary of course, she assumed it was obvious, she couldn’t imagine anyone else by her side. Then she officially asks her and they hug. Joseph opens the floor for anyone to offer their gratitude to Minnie and Lucas. Elizabeth chooses this time to read the “Carpe Diem,” poem. Everyone loves it. Lucas and Elizabeth dance. Richard approaches Lee, he tells him that he was stubborn, Lee asks if he can start Monday and Richard says he will be there. Richard tells his family and the children are very happy. Lee is in the doorway, he looks in, then turns around.

Elizabeth and Lucas are sitting outside, enjoying a glass of wine and she says they have so much to be grateful for.

The next day, Bill heads to the hot springs, falls in backwards and says “Carpe Diem.”
