In tonight’s 9-1-1: Lone Star episode, Austin Firehouse 126 was back! The firefighters there worked together with the paramedics to save hundreds of lives. It was often a thankless job. They ran into cheaters, domestic abusers, and even human traffickers. They met all sorts and they’ve battled all sorts.
Only nothing could prepare them for Owen’s crisis of faith. Owen was in a fog. He couldn’t feel happiness or sadness. He was just numb. He’s been feeling like this since his half-brother died. It turns out that Owen had another brother. He had a little brother named Tyler who died at the beach. Owen was supposed to be watching him. He never really got over the guilt he felt when his brother died on his watch.
Tyler was the “T” in TK. Owen named his son after his brother. He wanted to honor him. He couldn’t really do that with Robert because things were different. Owen may have blamed himself for what happened to Tyler, but that was a child’s grief that couldn’t fully process his emotions and he was a man when Robert died.
Robert was dying from Huntington’s Disease. He didn’t want his loved ones watching as he wasted away. He committed suicide. Owen helped with that and so that time he really was guilty. It wasn’t like the time he took his eyes off of Tyler in the water.
Owen stayed by Robert’s side throughout the whole night. He watched his brother die. Since then, he hasn’t been the same. He was single again. He was struggling with filling Judd’s spot on the team.
Tommy ended up taking him to group counseling and it didn’t work because Owen couldn’t be honest. He couldn’t tell them he facilitated an assisted suicide. It wasn’t legal in the United States. He could be arrested for murder if he ever told anyone what he did. Owen couldn’t tell anyone the truth and that was forcing him to go without support during his depression.
Tommy seems to be the only one that noticed Owen was off at first. Its why she brought him to the meeting. The meeting didn’t help only Owen was good at faking being okay. He was just that sorta guy.
He even made the man running the group session feel less bad for not knowing about Tyler. The one thing Owen couldn’t do was decide between Paul and Marjan on who should become the next lieutenant. They were openly competing against each other. They pretended like it was harmless when it wasn’t. They both really wanted that job.
They were still competing against each other when they got the call. There was an armored truck that was forced off the road. Some guys tried to rob them. The robbers set up a road block and they were armed to the teeth.
They thought they could frighten the driver into pulling over. They apparently underestimated him because he just kept driving. He was going to ram them when they used a special gun to shoot through his bulletproof windshield. They killed the driver. The armored truck then flipped several times before landing on the highway.
There were two men inside. The driver died instantly. The second security guard was running out of oxygen when the truck caught fire and so the firefighters used the bullet hole in the windshield to break through.
They freed the second man. He got put on oxygen. He looks like he’s going to make it. This was armed robbery and in Texas that gets handled by the Rangers. This now included Carlos. He became a Ranger like his late dad. He went on to take this case and he managed to put a genuine smile on Owen’s face when they ran into each other.
Carlos has a gut instinct about these armored truck robberies. There’s been more than one. He suspected that there was a pattern connecting all of them and unfortunately his boss couldn’t accept instinct. Not when people are dying. The one thing they knew about the thieves were that they had military training.
It would explain how they knew about firing a high-powered weapon. It would also explain how they were able to shoot a driver while the vehicle was in motion. Carlos didn’t think the military angle would pan out because there’s over a million former service members in the state. And his boss didn’t care how long it would take vetting everyone.
Carlos was forced to work an angle he knew was useless. Back at the 126, Marjan and Paul’s rivalry was getting out of control. Marjan jumped on a moving vehicle to win brownie points with Owen. Paul jumped into a vat of oil to win to gain recognition. They both also fought at a third scene on who should get the hose first.
Their rivalry was getting out of control. Owen didn’t know what to do about it because he ultimately still needed to fill Judd’s spot. He didn’t know that Judd was thinking about returning.
Judd retired a year ago to assist his son, Wyatt. Wyatt was in a bad accident. He was left paralyzed. Judd retired so that he could take of his son and get him back in fighting shape.
Wyatt was still in a wheelchair, but he can take care of himself now. He got a job. He has his own place for his family. He was fine. Judd was now at a loose end. He doesn’t know what to do with himself now. He couldn’t turn to his wife because she was doing missionary work. He couldn’t turns to Owen because his pride was stopping him.
Wyatt thought he should un-retire. Judd didn’t want to do that because he didn’t want to start over from the bottom. He would have to do that now that they he was accepting his pension and so Wyatt reminded him that he had contacts with the Fire Chief. Owen has friends in that department. He could go to bat for Judd if Judd asks.
Judd just didn’t want to ask Owen to do that because he figured Owen would ask him to come back if he really needed him. He was waiting on a call that might come. And in the meantime Wyatt was assisting Carlos with his case.
Carlos figured out that the thieves were creating road accidents to divert the armored trucks. They always called it in to 311 and so Wyatt pulled up those calls for Carlos. He was a dispatcher now. He found the calls. He gave it to Carlos. The calls were all made from a burner. Only it was the same voice for each of the calls.
Carlos worked with a fellow Ranger to identify the accent on the calls. They took their pool of over three hundred servicemen down to six people and their boss still wanted to play it safe. He didn’t want to arrest the guys without concrete evidence.
They instead laid a trap for thieves. They waited until they called in another emergency. Then they used a fake armored truck to get the thieves in one place. No one was harmed and the thieves were finally arrested.
Carlos’s boss took all the credit. Carlos wasn’t mad because he managed to befriend a fellow Ranger when they worked this case together. And he got to stay on to work his dad’s case in secret.
Owen meanwhile reached out to Judd. Owen wanted his help in choosing between Marjan and Paul only Judd wasn’t much help. He didn’t want to fill his spot with someone else.
And then a train came off the tracks right during Wyatt’s shift.
