In tonight’s 9-1-1 premiere episode, Athena and Bobby finally took a honeymoon. They went on a cruise. They’ve tried vacationing prior to the cruise. They were always forced to cancel or push it back and so Bobby finally just said let’s enjoy the cruise. However, this couple were first responders. Bobby was a firefighter.

Athena was a cop. They both could tell when things went down a bad road and that’s exactly where the cruise led them. Athena had been apprehensive about the trip.

She thought it was a sign that something kept preventing them from taking the cruise. She talked to a therapist about the anxiety she was feeling. She only agreed to finally go because she knew how important it was to Bobby.

Athena never mentioned this to Bobby only she saw a movie in childhood. It was about a cruise sinking. It scarred Athena for life. She’s never forgotten the movie. She was afraid of going on boats because she thought it would sink and her therapist downplayed her fears. He told her that it was just a tv movie.

He said it made a big impression because she was kid when she saw it. He also added that cruises were a safe means of travel. He talked her into the cruise. He reminded her that Bobby wanted to do something nice for her and so she went.

She went. She almost died. Both the therapist and Bobby were to blame. Athena was fighting for her life while her friends was dealing with an unpiloted aircraft crashing into a house. It was a National Guard plane. The pilot was forced to eject. The plane took itself down. It crashed into a house. It pinned Abe to his chair.

Not that he minded because he couldn’t wait to get away from his wife of thirty years. They had no kids. They had no pets. They were in the middle of fighting about his favorite chair when the plane crashed into them.

Abe was trapped. Edna was disappointed he hadn’t died. Chimney was doing his best to live with both of their sarcasm and that’s when they were told that the plane still has a missile attached.

They tried to disarm it with the pilot that got ejected guiding the way however he was concussed. He forgot which wire they were supposed to cut. He didn’t know if it was red or green.

The firefighters were going to take a risk until Chimney figured out how to get Abe away from the missile. He lowered the lever on the chair. It was an old-fashioned recliner. It bent so low that they were able to move Abe.

Abe couldn’t wait to go to the hospital to get away from his wife. His wife thanked God that his ugly chair was finally out of her house. What house? There was no house left standing after a plane crashed through it and so that got Chimney thinking. He realized he didn’t want to be like that couple.

He later surprised Maddie with a romantic dinner at home. He thought they should start dating again. They were engaged with a daughter. Only Chimney thought they should still date each other to keep everything fresh and so they don’t “calcify” like Abe and Edna.

Chimney’s idea of dating required them mapping it out. They put it on a spreadsheet. They have dates planned for the next two months. Some were quiet dates and others exciting dates.

It was all planned. It wasn’t spontaneous. Maddie was mostly doing it for Chimney. She had been the dispatcher on that same call that scared him. She overheard Abe and Edna.

She understands that they have to work on their relationship to stop it from calcifying. She just didn’t think they needed it or were heading there until Chimney started talking about it. And Athena had another reason not to go on the cruise.

Athena loves Bobby. He’s always there for her. Their relationship has often been surrounded by chaos and she told her therapist she wasn’t sure if they could exist without that chaos.

She was afraid of being alone with Bobby. She wasn’t sure if they would talk. She was afraid of saying or doing something to mess up their relationship and so running into Lola and Norman Peterson was a godsend.

Lola once flashed everyone on a billboard because she felt unseen by her husband. Well, Norman was that husband. He waited for her after her sixty days in jail and now they were spending their second honeymoon as well as their retirement on cruises.

Cruises are a cheaper lifestyle in retirement. It’s also full of activities. It even kept things fresh for them. They’ve been on a cruise ever since Lola got out of prison. It’s been a couple of years now. They were on a first name basis with most of the staff and they were assigned the same dining table as Athena and Bobby.

The other couple were quite talkative. Athena and Bobby found them annoying. Bobby was ready to stay in the cabin for the next two weeks. It was Athena that kept pushing for them to interact with this couple because she didn’t want to spend alone time with her husband.

Athena couldn’t maintain this so she pretended to be sick. She was sick and she told Bobby to go on the activities without her. Bobby told her he would only he went to AA instead.

Bobby was an alcoholic. He’s been sober for years. He told the AA meeting on the cruise that his wife doesn’t spend time with him. Bobby may be many things. He just wasn’t stupid. He knew that Athena genuinely didn’t like the Petersons. He knew that Athena tried to fob him off on them while she pretended to have a headache.

Bobby finally sat her down the next day to say he wanted to spend quality time together. Athena agreed to try and then she got caught up in a mystery.

Athena came to believe Norman murdered Lola. Bobby told her she was looking for an excuse. Then they saw Norman. He was with someone using Lola’s cruise pass and she wasn’t Lola. She was a Spanish woman. She was much younger than Lola. Norman really did murder his wife to be with this new woman. Athena and Bobby started working together to prove the crime.

Back on the mainland, Chimney realized he couldn’t plan for everything. He met a couple that were trying to keep things fresh and it resulted in them getting stuck together during sex. Chimney then decided to throw away the spreadsheet. He got them a hot tub. He felt that would spice things up.

Athena and Bobby were also proven wrong about Norman. He didn’t kill Lola. Lola has been kidnapped. They were mistaken for a jewelry smugglers that were living on the cruise.

And that woman with Norman wants him to give up millions in bitcoin or they were going to kill his wife, but they didn’t wait for Norman to come up with the money because they must have figured out he doesn’t have it.

The kidnappers armed themselves and they took over the boat.

THE END!
