In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Sully was back. Ripley’s old friend was back at the hospital. They got into a fight on his last visit. The security guards had to pull them away from each other and it ended with Sully refusing treatment. He has lung cancer, but he wasn’t back at the hospital for that. He was actually there with his girlfriend. She was pregnant.

Her OBGYN was out of town for two weeks. She was experiencing cramping and that’s when Sully suggested they see Ripley. He was a doctor now. He works at a prestigious hospital. And Ripley was technically tied by doctor/patient confidentiality.

Sully didn’t tell Lynne he has cancer. He’s been keeping that from her. He wasn’t ready to face the possibility of cancer and he was costing himself valuable time. If he had gone to any other doctor, they would have noticed his persistent cough. They would have advised him to seek medical help.

Sully didn’t want that. He was prepared to die for his pride and so he took Lynne to Ripley. Ripley couldn’t tell her that Sully has cancer. It would open him up to a lawsuit. He was already facing one of those and the hospital would appreciate him not getting another one.

Ripley focused on Lynne. He called in Dr. Asher. She checked Lynne. Lynne had a procedure to close her cervix early into her pregnancy. It was still holding up great. Her problem seems to be a UTI. Asher has to run some tests to confirm it. The UTI can be healed with some antibiotics.

Ripley was going to leave the situation when he saw Sully coughing uncontrollably. That’s when Ripley thought it best to try again with his old friend. He tried to get Sully to be honest enough with his cancer. He at least wanted Sully to be honest with his pregnant girlfriend about it.

Sully refused. He doesn’t want to admit he has cancer. He told Ripley to drop it and Ripley was forced to do so. Dr. Loren Johnson meanwhile was back at the hospital. He was still healing from his stomach wound. He and Maggie were going on a date when they saw a woman crash into some scaffolding.

They safely got the woman out of there before other items fell off the scaffolding. They went with her to the hospital. Loren had applied to work at Chicago Med. Archer liked what he saw of Loren. He let Loren know he was auditioning for the fellowship in his treatment of Whitney.

Loren might get the job if everything works out. Maggie also made herself busy. She was showing around the new student doctor. The student doctor’s first patient proved to be a problem. The patient’s name is Jay. He injured himself during a night drinking. He also appeared extremely agitated.

Maggie thought it best to call in Dr. Charles for a psych consult. Only Jay said he knows what’s wrong with him. He has depression. He was diagnosed months ago. He’s on medication. The depression in combination with the drinking should have calmed him. Not agitated him.

The student doctor was stumped. Dr. Charles was the same. Dr. Charles spoke to Jay’s father. Jay was struggling with focusing and that all changed when he went on the medication. He was fine at first. Then it was like someone dialed it up to eleven. He was up all night working or creating.

He started drinking because that was the only way he can sleep. He drinks till he passes out. Charles realized then what was wrong with Jay. Jay wasn’t depressed. He has bipolar disorder. His current medication exacerbates his condition.

Dr. Charles told Jay about his new medical diagnosis. Jay said he’s finally selling his art. He works during his manic episodes and he didn’t want to give that up. He was refusing the bipolar medication.

He wasn’t listening to either Dr. Charles or his own father. His father supported the doctor. Jay said that his father never supported his art and that he doesn’t understand what it would mean if he has to give that up. Dr. Charles decided to wait with Jay. He was going to come up with a plan to treat him. He just has to think of one first.

Dr. Charles also saw Ripley take out his anger on the trash can. Pawel’s lawyer brought up the fact he was institutionalized. Ripley didn’t react when he heard that, but he had to let it out somewhere. The lawsuit along with Sully’s condition wasn’t helping his mood. Sully started to cough so much that he coughed up blood.

He ripped the lining in his throat. He had to be rushed into surgery. They also couldn’t tell Lynne about it. Lynne’s water broke. She was twenty-nine weeks. It was too early for the baby to come and so she wanted to know where Sully was. He should be at her side.

She didn’t know he was in surgery or that he has masts in his lungs. Asher felt bad for her. Her hands were tied as well. She couldn’t tell Lynne. Ripley couldn’t tell Lynne.

They had to wait on Sully to work up the courage. After Ripley lost it on the trash can, Dr. Charles went to Sharon. He wanted her to convince Ripley to settle the lawsuit. Charles couldn’t tell her about Ripley’s past or that Charles was once his doctor. The most he could tell her was that the lawsuit might affect Ripley worse than he initially thought it would.

Charles was the first person to convince Ripley to fight the lawsuit. He said Pawel was a con artist. He took money from his own sister because he had people after him. Pawel was always out for a quick buck. He also had no case. Ripley could fight his lawsuit. He just couldn’t watch his friend die.

Sully was going to die if he didn’t accept treatment. Ripley talked to Sully and Sully admitted why he didn’t want to accept treatment. He said he remembered what it was like with his dad. He was so happy when his father went to prison. He didn’t want his own child to think that of him.

Its why he thought he deserved to die. He thought his future child would better off without him. Ripley helped to see that Sully wasn’t like his dad in any way and so Sully finally came clean to Lynne. Lynne’s waters hadn’t broken after all. It was mere excess fluid. She and the baby were going to be fine. They were standing by Sully as he undergoes cancer treatment.

Loren, however, lost out on the job. He was in no condition to perform surgery. He was barely on his feet and Archer saw that he was neglecting himself. He was doing so the point that Archer couldn’t allow him to finish out with Whitney. And so Loren has to heal first.

Charles got Jay to accept treatment by giving a rousing speech of people with bipolar disorder. How it sometimes lead to them killing themselves. He also spoke with Ripley again. Ripley knew he was behind Sharon advising him to pay the lawsuit. Ripley wasn’t sure if that was the right thing.

THE END!
