In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Kevin Atwater was having lunch with his dad. They were catching up. Atwater’s watch broke down when they were together and so he was taking up the street to the jewelers when he heard a commotion. He was on jewelers row. He heard someone was robbing the store. He ran to the scene.
He ran into one thief with a gun and the other had a hammer. When they saw Atwater, they began firing. They shot a couple of men. One of the men they shot had been caught between the two security doors. Atwater tried to get him in time and unfortunately those doors weren’t going to shatter. No matter what Atwater did to them.
The bad guys got away. There were two dead bodies to deal with. It was a horrible start to a shift. Atwater had to call for the Fire Department to break down the security doors.
They were too late to save the man trapped inside, but Atwater still had an unharmed witness to question. She was the wife of the man that got trapped in between the security doors. She had a great view of everything. It just wasn’t enough to get her to talk. Mrs. Teresa Westbrooke claims she never saw anything. Her head was down within seconds of hearing the smashing glass.
Teresa claims the men took their wallets. They wanted to know where they live and they threatened to visit if she talked to the cops. This might explain why she lied to Atwater.
She told him that she didn’t see the robbers’ faces. Voight took over this case. They checked the security cameras. It shows that Teresa did see the face of one of the men. They hadn’t brought down their balaclava until after Teresa looked at one of them straight in the eye. She lied to Atwater. He visited her home later to ask her about it.
He figured she didn’t say anything because she was still dealing with trauma. He instead faced accusation from Teresa because she wanted to know why he went to check on the other man first.
He checked on the store owner named Geroge Burton. The thieves had beaten him to death. Atwater checked on his condition before he tried to help Teresa’s husband, Corey. Teresa said it like she blames Atwater for her husband’s death. Which was unfair because he had warned them to stay down. He told them don’t move or else they’d get in the way. And they ignored him because they saw an escape route.
Well, look how that worked out. Corey’s dead. George is dead. Teresa is the only one that can identify one of the shooters and she was refusing to help because she didn’t want to deal with retaliation.
Teresa was still refusing to talk when the cops overheard on their scanner that another robbery was taking place on jeweler’s row. The thieves were back. They had targeted a different store this time and the cops rushed to the scene hoping to save people. And they were too late to truly help anyone.
The bad guys kept getting away. Their most recent crime also had a body count. They killed one woman and so now Teresa couldn’t keep stalling them. She had to talk or they were going to bring her down to question her.
Atwater went back to her house. He threatened to bring up her past. He threatened to destroy her life by arresting her for obstruction of justice. He got her to look through photos and she identified the man that she saw that day before he put on his mask. Once that was done, Teresa threw out Atwater because she never wants to see him again.
Teresa didn’t seem to care that he placed a detailed car outside to protect her. She wanted him gone and it doesn’t look like she’ll forgive him for his tactics. Regardless, she still gave them what they needed.
They had a suspect. They arrested the guy. They questioned him for hours on end. He didn’t want to crack or give up his partner. He got sent to jail where somehow he got out a message to his partner. They must have realized that Teresa talked. The other guy started driving to Teresa’s home. He planned on taking her out and Atwater stopped him.
Atwater made it to the scene in time. He saved Teresa’s son. He heard Teresa moving around upstairs and he went up. He saw the shooter. He shot him and he asked Teresa to call for an ambulance only she refused to do so. She wanted that man to die. If her husband had to die, then so should the man that pulled the trigger. Atwater called it over the radio. The gunman was going to recover. And they found out how they got a message to the other about Teresa.
But Atwater went back to the original scene. He was so consumed by regret that he had to look at the scene and see if he could have done something differently. The truth ended up being that he overlooked something.
THE END!
