Fans of Dexter can rejoice! While the show’s sequel, which debuted in 2021, revealed Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) finally passed away, the franchise has come up with a new concept that will give fans a sneak peek into the main character’s earlier days before the OG series.
Dexter: Original Sin – Cast Announced For Prequel
Dexter: Original Sin is set to stream on Paramount+, just as the sequel. Showtime will produce the series and has already signed cast leads for the big franchise prequel.
Actor Patrick Gibson will play a young Dexter, and some fans may recognize him from his work on The OA and Shadow and Bone. In addition, Dexter’s dad will be alive and well in the prequel, and while James Remar played Harry Morgan in flashbacks for the OG Dexter, actor Christian Slater has signed on for the role in the prequel. Lastly, actress Molly Brown will Debra Morgan in the prequel.
Dexter: Original Sin – The Plot & Premiere
The prequel takes place in 1991, in Miami, 15 years before the original series began. In this show, Dexter “transitions” from student to avenging serial killer, and the official synopsis also notes:
“When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
The original Dexter aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2016 and earned three Emmy nods for “Best Drama Series”. In addition, Michael C. Hall earned five “Best Actor” Emmy nominations.
As of this writing, there is no word on the official release date for the prequel; however, as the cast leads are intact, filming could roll out this year, with its airdate potentially taking place in 2025. Only time will tell.
