General Hospital Recap: Wednesday, January 31 – Esme & Spencer Fall Overboard – Carly’s Reporter Crisis

General Hospital (GH) spoilers recap for Wednesday, January 31, reveals that Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) met with Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson), Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) and Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) at Crimson since Deception’s advertising contract was up for renewal.

There were some concerns about Carly’s Crimson takeover – and Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) voiced even more concerns once she showed up next.

However, Carly wanted to boost Deception’s page count at a discount for the April issue, which was always an important one.

Tracy was wary of sinking more money into this without Carly proving herself, but Carly insisted on a contract.

After Carly and Tracy bickered about the terms, Tracy finally agreed to a deal and was surprised when Carly’s contract specified the exact terms they’d just settled on.

Meanwhile, Nina Corinthos (Cynthia Watros) borrowed Olivia Quartermaine’s (Lisa LoCicero) office while her own was getting a fresh coat of paint.

A reporter named Gemma Compton tracked Nina down, so Nina remembered some of her fashion columns and praised her work.

Gemma fished for the scoop on why Nina got the boot at Crimson, but Nina said it was her choice and offered a polite statement about Carly taking the magazine in a new direction.

Gemma questioned Drew Cain’s (Cameron Mathison) decision to replace Nina, so Nina spoke off the record about him not being a businessman and said he was listening to his heart instead of his head.

Next, Lois Cerullo (Rena Sofer) cornered Olivia in the Metro Court restaurant and insisted on talking things out.

Olivia awaited an apology, so Lois said she was sorry for crossing the line with her comments about Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna).

That said, Lois refused to apologize for making sure Sonny knew the SEC informant truth since it was the right thing to do. Olivia complained about Lois throwing away the trust between them just to score points with Sonny.

Although Olivia expressed doubt about whether the friendship could be saved, the situation shifted when Nina tried to blame Lois for blowing everything up. Olivia rushed to Lois’ defense and acted like Nina needed a good dose of humility.

Afterward, Lois and Olivia officially got their friendship back on track, so they finished talking through their issues and hugged.

As for Nina, she teared up over seeing her name on an old issue of Crimson and then angrily tossed the magazine on the desk.

At Crimson again, Gemma ambushed Carly for a comment and needed one from Drew as well. When Carly asked about the story, Gemma wondered why Drew would get rid of Nina and replace her with his girlfriend who had no fashion experience.

While Esme Prince (Avery Pohl) taunted Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) on the ship in Paris, Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) realized there was trouble based on the bloody deck and ran back to his room.

Unfortunately, Esme had already tied Trina up and put duct tape over her mouth by then, so Trina was struggling elsewhere on the ship.

Spencer put Esme in a chokehold and learned she’d smashed the satellite system. When Spencer threatened to take Esme out permanently, she suggested he’d be getting rid of Trina too since he’d never find her in time.

Spencer reluctantly let Esme put zip ties on his hands and feet before she went over her twisted plan.

By the time Trina was free, Esme acted like they’d be long gone and Laura Collins (Genie Francis) would have to find Ace Cassadine (Jay and Joey Clay) for her if she ever wanted to see Spencer again.

Spencer warned that Nikolas Cassadine (Adam Huss) wouldn’t give Ace up and thought Esme should just surrender now.

Esme mentioned that she had some special medicine that could make Spencer obedient, turn him into a “drooling imbecile” or stop his breathing depending on the dosage.

Before Esme could inject Spencer, Trina got free from her restraints and armed herself with a wrench. After Trina barged in, she fought with Esme on the bed and eventually the floor.

Trina wound up bashing Esme in the head to knock her out and freed Spencer before telling him to just let Esme bleed.

On the deck, Trina and Spencer tried to flag down help, but Esme popped up with the syringe again and injected Spencer.

After Esme said she just gave Spencer enough to make him loopy, she assured Trina that there was more than enough left for her.

Esme tried to inject Trina next, but Spencer struggled with Esme until they both tumbled over the side of the ship together – leaving Trina horrified.

In Puerto Rico, Sonny helped Ava Jerome (Maura West) duck for cover as shots were fired. Ava and Sonny eventually managed to get to a room that was safe with Dex Heller’s (Evan Hofer) help.

Ava’s hand was scraped up in the chaos, so she got a bandage and went with a guard to see Avery Corinthos (Ava and Grace Scarola) once Dex gave the “all clear.”

Dex eventually gave Sonny updates on the shooter’s setup being found. It was apparent that this person knew just where to aim along with the position of the sun there and how to escape.

Sonny said whoever did this knew their system inside and out – including all their procedures and operations.

General Hospital spoilers say Sonny won’t rest until he makes sure his loved ones are protected, so stay tuned for more news on the threat.
