In tonight’s Law & Order episode, a rich guy was stupid at two in the morning. His name was Evan Marks. He was the CEO of VenZip. It was all about cryptocurrency and paying through an app. It was supposed to be the future of finance. Evan and his partner James Sawyer created the company to make cash obsolete.
Yet, Evan died because he withdrew two thousand dollars in cash from a local ATM. It was right across the street of VenZip’s headquarters. He shouldn’t have been withdrawing such a large amount at that time of night and so everyone assumed he died in a robbery/homicide. And they initially thought that was stupid.
Or at least that’s what they thought until they were facing outside pressure. Evan’s old partner Sawyer posted on social media that the crime in New York was out of control.
Sawyer made it seem like the cops were just sitting around and eating donuts. He failed to mention that they got the case two hours after the crime when mostly everyone is asleep. The cops to the medical examiner all had to be woken up just for this one crime and it was a thankless job. Everyone was doing their best. They even found a suspect in less than a day.
They found the man who stole Evan’s two grand. His name is Blake Hughes. His fingerprints were on Evan’s wallet and they found the two grand on him when they arrested him.
Only he wasn’t their killer. He was just an opportunistic drug dealer. He got a call from Evan that he wanted drugs that night. He went there and he saw Evan arguing with a man before he was killed. And he took the money after Evan was dead because he figured why not. Blake didn’t recognize the man that Evan was arguing with. He just overheard some of their conversation.
They were apparently fighting over a woman. They looked into Evan’s background. They found some flirty messages with Lacy Stevens. They even met Lacy’s husband, Craig Walsh.
Both of them were partying with Evan the night he died. They have an open marriage. They were tied to this underground party scene for rich people called Lifestyle. Evan was hosting the latest party for such clientele at his offices that night. He left because he was supposed to have gotten more drugs and then he never returned.
There’s literal footage of the married couple together at the time of death.
It also turns out Evan was big in the party scene. The only time he got mad was when he was arguing with Sawyer about such lifestyle. Sawyer was a stickler for rules.
The only time their friends had heard from him was when he was discussing Eva with Evan only EVA wasn’t a person. It was an advanced software program for Artificial Intelligence. Otherwise known as A.I. The cops only learned about it when they managed to track down Sawyer before he got on a flight out of the country.
Sawyer claimed that EVA was fully under Evan’s purview. Evan fired two hundred of their engineers that had been working on EVA once EVA started to evolve.
The computer program can do their jobs faster than they can all the while being free. They didn’t have to pay the program like they did the engineers. The downside was that EVA was evolving quicker than many suspected and it could one day prove dangerous. However, there were no laws currently in place against the program. Thereby making it completely legal.
The cops looked into the two hundred fired engineers. They found Ben Stafford. His ID card showed he gained access to VenZip during the time of the party and the person who put together the guest list had said he wasn’t a member of their little club. The cops got a warrant for Stafford. They searched his apartment.
They found the gun in the dumpster in the back. The gun was proven to be the murder weapon and so they arrested Stafford. He even confessed to the crime during the interview. Then his lawyer shows up and she manages to get that confession tossed out.
Stafford’s lawyer also managed to paint Sawyer a potential killer. She found company emails in which Sawyer and Evan were fighting over control of the company.
They both wanted to push the other out. With Evan dead, Sawyer was named the new and sole CEO of the company. The lawyer was good and so the only part that stumped everyone was how she gained access to those files. Those were important files hidden by EVA. It shouldn’t have been seen by Stafford after he got fired. Not unless Stafford managed to hack the A.I.
Stafford was the true creator of EVA. He might have stolen files. The upside was that he didn’t create a possible deep fake video of him shooting Evan.
Sawyer might have done that last one. Sawyer suddenly shows up at the last minute with the video of Stafford shooting Evan and it felt wrong to Executive ADA Nolan Price. He’s seen Stafford taking notes. He knows that Stafford is left-handed. The Stafford in the video was right-handed. The video showed that he shot Evan with his right hand and so Price had the video authenticated before he considered using it.
There was no way of telling if the video or real or not. The police’s best tech people couldn’t even figure that one out. Only Price still used the video. His boss told him to use it and he did. And it got him a guilty verdict against Stafford.
Price saw Sawyer’s face after the verdict was read and he looked smug. Almost as if he did plant a fake video!
THE END!
