In the next Law & Order episode, the victim was West Berkshire. He was the son of famous humanitarian, Callum Berkshire. The family was filthy rich. They were often in the New York papers and even on TMZ. West had the whole world handed to him. He worked a bogus job that his father gave him.
He got paid good money to do nothing. To be in charge of nothing. Someone it seems wanted to knock him off his pedestal. He was killed in his father’s newest building. His father gave him the penthouse because West had celebrity friends. He wanted to use West to interest people in the building and that’s all he thought his son was good for.
When they informed the parents about West’s death, Callum practically demanded a death sentence. He wanted the killer to be found and taken care of on his timetable.
He said he has important friends. He was friends with Governor. The Police Commissioner. He was even friends with the new District Attorney. He asked the detectives who he should call to get the ball moving and the detectives said it wasn’t necessary. They handled all murder investigations seriously. They were just there to inform the family as well as get a list of West’s friends.
West contacted a burner phone on the night he died.
West’s parents thought the burner belonged to Kayla Cassidy. She was married. West’s father thought they were sleeping together. His wife Emily mentioned that Kayla has a gun.
She does, but it wasn’t used in the commission of a crime. Kayla got the gun for protection. She has a stalker that doxed her. She also wasn’t sleeping with West. She said West’s father thought that because he always thought the worst of West. They were merely friends. They were two kids of famous people. They knew that nothing they did was going to change people’s minds on what they deserve.
The burner phone also didn’t belong to Kayla. Kayla knew what the text meant though. She said he was ordering drugs and she gave the detectives the name of his drug dealer.
The guy tried to run when he saw cops. He wasn’t their killer. He was supposed to meet West that night and the murder interrupted their deal before it could take place. The detectives let the drug dealer go. They continued looking into West. They thought they found an enemy of his. This guy name Ravi Singh claims to hate the Berkshires. He stated they should all be shot on social media.
Ravi wasn’t their killer either. He found out that Callum used a legal loophole to get money from the city. It’s what helped fund his newest building and he was supposed to offer affordable housing as part of the agreement for receiving the money. He instead was going to sell it to the rich as condos. He was no humanitarian. He was a ruthless businessman. He even thought his own son was too soft. West found out what his father did. He confronted him the night he was killed. It went nowhere because again Callum dismissed him.
Callum was made to answer for that with the police. He said his son was too soft. He never would have done anything against him and so he dismissed him like he was nothing.
He also added that his son was so weak that he refused to fire an employee that beat him up. The employee was Ryan Marley. He works as a security guard for the building where West was murdered. The police actually spoke to him after the murder. The man never admitted that he had problems with West much less an altercation.
The cops continued looking into Marley. It turns out Marley who lives with his daughter was recently evicted. He was squatting in the building. West found them.
Marley killed West and he later claimed it was in self-defense. He said he was defending his daughter against an intruder. It didn’t matter that he shot his employer or that his employer owned that penthouse. He was claiming self-defense. His lawyer was trying to exclude everything. She claimed that that Marley had squatter’s rights. The lawyer didn’t change the narrative until they went to court.
ADA Price later brought up Marley seemingly hatred for West. He beat West up. He became angry that he had nothing other than his daughter and West had everything.
West also hadn’t fired him after the fight. He took pity on Marley. He thought Marley was struggling. He wanted to give him another chance and Marley used that to break the law. He stole from someone who was nice to him. He went on to kill him because West went to an apartment he in fact owned and he found squatters. And so Marley didn’t kill for his daughter or to protect his home, he killed someone that would have let him stay in the apartment.
He refused to take responsibility for his spite. Marley and his lawyer tried to claim someone else killed West. They said West was a drug addict. He probably knew a lot of violent people.
One of them could have killed him. They only changed gears when the murder weapon was found. Marley sold the murder weapon to someone and that someone identified Marley as selling the weapon. That’s when Marley returned to his self-defense claim. He said that the gun belonged to West. West tried to use it on him and he took it away from him. And shot him to protect his daughter.
The daughter allegedly walked in on the fight. Marley said he had to protect her and that’s why he ultimately confessed to the murder on the stand. They don’t have other family besides each other.
His wife was dead. He sold his wife’s wedding ring to try to make rent, but the landlord doubled the rent and that’s why they were homeless. They couldn’t stay at shelters for families because those were full. They either had to squat or Marley would put his daughter in foster care. Something he didn’t want to do.
Marley’s daughter backed up his claim. Alex Marley was deaf. She was actually a student at the same school where Lieutenant Kate Dixon’s son teaches. Her son was also deaf.
Its why she knows ASL so well. It came in handy later. After the little girl backed up her father’s claim, the cops found videos of West on social media shooting a weapon. It was too grainy to see if it was the weapon used to kill him and so Dixon advocated for Marley getting a plea deal. That all changed when Dixon found out that Alex lied on the stand.
Alex was telling her teacher (Dixon’s son) all about it. Dixon saw the conversation. She confronted Alex. She said that the gun belonged to her father all along. Marley bought it for protection once they started living on the street. Dixon wasn’t sure what to do with this information. She wanted to ignore it at first because she understood Marley’s side of the story.
He thought he was shooting an invader. He was acting in self-defense. She still ended up telling ADA Price because Marley didn’t have a legal right to the apartment. And Price used that to convict Marley for murder.
Marley was convicted. He goes to prison and his daughter goes into foster care.
THE END!
