In tonight’s NCIS: ORIGINS episode, Gibbs’s deployments weren’t always easy, but it helped that he used to receives messages from his family. Shannon and Kelly used to write him every week when he was deployed. Some letters offered details while others were written just to tell him how much they love him.
Those letters stopped after their death. Gibbs gave up his career in the Marines. He went back stateside and he was still getting used to the silence when he caught a rough case. It was the first of its kind for him as an NCIS Agent. His team were brought in because Staff Sergeant Derek Jones’s girlfriend was murdered. And the killer kidnapped the marine’s daughter, Mildred Jones.
The girlfriend was a schoolteacher. She didn’t have a record. She didn’t even seem to have enemies. Brianna Davis was a good person and she became collateral damage when a kidnapper took Mildred.
There was evidence Mildred was the real target all along. The little girl tried to hide during the initial break-in. She hid in a lower cabinet when she was found and taken. She wasn’t killed right away. She was instead spotted in the backseat of a car driving out of the neighborhood. Or at least that’s what the neighbor Jim claimed.
Everyone believed Jim. They tracked down the car matching his description. It was heading towards the Mexican’s border. It made everyone panic until they realized that Jim’s story kept changing throughout the whole day. The whole neighborhood came out to assist with finding Mildred.
This included Jim. Jim kept making himself out to be more important than he was to anyone willing to listen. Franks eventually threatened him with violence and that’s when Jim said he never saw a car or Mildred that night. He just wanted to be a part of the moment.
Franks had to go back to the neighborhood. This time he brought hunting dogs. They gave the dogs something of Mildred to sniff and the dogs led them to Mildred. Mildred was hiding in the woods.
She was hiding from Briana’s killer. She wasn’t really talking. Franks didn’t want to push her at first. Nor did he was to immediately alert Children Protective Service. They didn’t want Briana’s killer to know that they found Mildred alive and so they went ahead with putting her face on a milk carton to buy Mildred some time.
They couldn’t get into contact with her father. He still doesn’t know what happened. The team in the meantime didn’t want the little girl to get lost in the system. They kept her at the office until she felt comfortable enough to open up to Lala. Mildred saw the man that killed Briana. Briana was in fact the actual target. They saw the evidence through the lens of a missing child and that’s why they failed to see that Briana was the target all along. Mildred was supposed to have gone to school. She was feeling tired that day. Briana allowed her to sleep in because she herself had the day off.
When the killer went to that house, he thought Briana was home alone. He didn’t know that Mildred saw him or that she witnessed the murder. Mildred ran off to hide in the woods because that’s what her father told her to do. He told her to run if she was in danger. She ran off and that probably saved her life. She started opening up the longer she was with NCIS. She still wouldn’t describe the man she saw and Gibbs decided to talk to her himself. Franks was worried this case could traumatize Gibbs all over again. He had him running around the city only Gibbs knows how to relate to little girls.
Gibbs knows the comic books that Mildred talks about. He can sing her favorite Whitney Houston song. He sang it with her while she came up with a description of what the killer looked like. Gibbs was really good with her and he needed to go home early after talking to her. It did traumatize him. He tried to pretend it didn’t when it did. Franks allowed him to leave early. Mildred was going home with Mary Jo for the night. Mildred’s father had finally been contacted and he was flying home on the first flight back.
NCIS now had a description of the killer. They also matched their murder weapon to a second crime scene. Someone used that gun to carry out a hit on a guy involved in organized crime. Franks contacted a criminal informant known as Black Kenny because that’s his guy for that kind of stuff. He tracked down the CI at an underground gambling ring. Black Kenny saw the photo of the killer. He gave Franks a name. He said the guy they were looking for goes by the name “Hatcher”. Hatcher was known for being a fixer.
NCIS went to Hatcher’s home. They ran into his father. His father said that Hatcher knows Mildred was still alive and that she saw his face. He went to go kill her. NCIS was too late to warn Mary Jo. Thankfully, Gibbs had stopped by her house. His daughter owned a rare toy that was hard to track down. He brought the toy to Mary Jo’s because he figured Mildred would like it. Gibbs was about to leave when he heard screams. Mary Jo had stabbed the assailant and still the guy didn’t stayed down. Gibbs had to fight him and he soon killed Hatcher.
It happened in front of Mildred, but she was going to be fine. She later got to go home with her dad. The bigger concern for everyone was how Hatcher knew they found Mildred. Hatcher’s father was questioned and he didn’t know how his son got the information. What he did know was why he killed Briana. Briana was teaching science. She took samples from a nearby lake and she noticed it was contaminated. The dairy company was dumbing chemicals into the lake because it would have been too expensive to get rid of it safely. And so that’s why Briana had to die.
The woman that operated the company was also a part of the search party looking for Briana. She knew when Briana was found and she passed it along to the hitman. The company will now face charges for the dumping. The owner will now face first degree murder charges for the hit she put out on Briana.
And once Gibbs saw Mildred safely in her father’s arms, he decided to finally take up Franks’s offer of dinner at his place.
THE END!
