The worst part about losing his family was when he went home to silence. His wife wasn’t listening to his music. His daughter wasn’t watching her favorite show. It was just complete silence.

Gibbs couldn’t go home to face that by himself and so he got a new place. He’d rather rent a hole in the wall rather than return home to an empty house.

He eventually found a place he could afford. He wasn’t there for long when Franks came knocking. Franks saw how defeated Gibbs appeared. He helped him get a job with NCIS because he knew Gibbs needed something to fight for. And he wasn’t wrong.

The job was the only thing Gibbs had. It would go on to define him. Back in the early days though, he was still figuring it out. NCIS received a call from a corporal about a bag at the side of the road.

The bag was a lady’s purse. There was blood on it. The corporal was concerned a woman could be in danger. He reported what he found and NCIS followed a trail of blood from the road. They soon found the body of an elderly woman. The coyotes were already sniffing around. Franks had to scare them off with his gun and NCIS took over the scene.

The victim was called Jane Doe at first. She was found in her nightgown. Even her purse was full of pictures instead of anything useful. The medical examiner determined that she was in her early eighties.

There was no missing person matching the victim’s description. It was hours before someone realized she was missing and came forward. The victim was identified as Alice Glenn.

Her son was in the military. She was living on base with his family. Alice suffered from dementia. She was living by herself until she couldn’t anymore. And she occasionally wanders off on her own.

Alice does that every once in a while. Her family didn’t like to report it because her staying with them was an infraction, but she would always take her wallet with her purse.

Her son’s address was in the wallet. It would help her return home. This wallet wasn’t found on the victim. She also suffered injuries.

It seems she was killed during a robbery and her body was thrown off the side of the road after death. If they hadn’t forgotten the purse, there’s no telling if Alice would have ever been found. The coyotes would have destroyed the evidence.

NCIS investigated the homicide. They checked a local drug den. They figured only someone desperate would so heinously kill a defenseless grandmother and they weren’t wrong.

The addicts down there said a guy named “Lefty” came covered in blood the other day. He also had enough to buy more than he normally would. He became their chief suspect. No one knew Lefty’s real name. Or address. They did know that he was arrested by an MP because he stole batteries out of cars. NCIS found the officer that arrested him and who let him go with a warning.

The guy has Lefty’s address.

Franks had Lefty brought in. He questioned him privately. He did so in a room without cameras and Lefty claimed the blood on him was his own. He said he suffered nosebleeds. He also said he saw something that night. He swears he saw a big black man that night. Only Franks didn’t believe him.

He was used to hearing about a supposed big black guy did it and so he wrote it off until a blood test showed that the blood on Lefty really was his. Franks was so angry at himself for questioning Lefty without cameras. The case would have been ruined if he never told anyone what Lefty said.

Not that Lefty was telling him everything. He really did make up the black guy only he did witness the murder. He said he saw a blond woman and he identified her car. It turns out it was Alice’s daughter-in-law. Alice started getting violent lately. It happens with people suffering from dementia.

Alice wasn’t remembering her family. She lashed out at them. She was hitting her daughter-in-law when they got into a fight. Alice was pushed. She fell backwards and she hit her head. It was an accident. The part about dumping her body and getting rid of her wallet to make it look like a robbery was not in fact an accident.

NCIS found their killer. It was up to the jury to decide what happens to her. Other than that, the case was officially closed. Gibbs used his free time to help a bird.

The bird flew in the wall in Gibb’s apartment and Gibbs nursed it back to health. He built a bird house for it. He got it bird food. He needed to heal someone and he got to do that with the bird. The bird eventually flew off on his own. And for a short time at least, it reminded Gibbs that he was still needed.

Franks however went home to an angry Tish. Tish found out that Franks was investigating her sexual assault from years ago. She told him to drop it because she wanted to move on and he refused to do that. He claimed he was getting her justice when really he was looking for revenge.

He was even using Vera’s new profiling program to try and find the man. And so Tish had to issue him an ultimatum tonight that he either respects her wishes or he gets out.

THE END!
