In tonight’s NCIS episode, NCIS Special Agent Torres was trying online dating. He joined MateQuest initially as a favor. Jimmy asked him to do it because he wanted a wingman and Torres helped him feel brave. Only now Torres wants to take it seriously.
He wanted try dating again. He took time off during his brief flirtation with Bishop. He devoted himself to work when that blew up and things were different now. He was going to therapy.
He was finally dealing with his issues. He was in a good place to meet someone and unfortunately the dating game has changed significantly since he last tried it. He couldn’t just post a bunch of pictures anymore. He’d get a mistaken for a bot.
Torres now has to sell himself. He has to write about his life. His interests. What he was looking for in a partner. Torres didn’t really know an answer to any of those things and so he asked McGee for help. They were talking about it when they got a call about a hostage situation.
There was a former Navy captain that took a doctor hostage. Captain Thomas Butler was losing his memory. He did a cognitive test and it triggered some buried memories to the point he was speaking Finnish. He was also coming up with these numbers.
When the doctor tried to ascertain what those numbers could mean, Butler took her hostage. There were some nurses nearby and they talked him down only his son was confused about what happened.
NCIS felt the same. They checked Butler’s file. He was never stationed in Finland or at least not officially. They also searched the numbers he gave and the search alone took out the electricity of an entire block.
The military hospital had to get someone in to fix it. The team figured it was best to go back to their office to look into Butler.
They found out Butler worked out of the Pentagon. Which could be a problem. Butler now has dementia. He could accidentally reveal state secrets and the numbers he gave could mean something. Kasie looked into those numbers. It was a spy code.
Kasie’s digging triggered a CIA investigation. The CIA sent Officer Conrad to answer questions from Director Vance. He revealed that Butler did have high clearance until he retired and Conrad didn’t think he was a problem because he’s been under surveillance.
Butler was a Soviet spy. He was recruited from Finland. He joined the Navy. The CIA were alerted to him back in the 70s and they let the Soviet Union believe that they had a considerable good mole. Then the Soviet Union collapsed. Butler was a man without a country.
He retired from the Navy. He’s been living as a civilian until he developed dementia. He was now dangerous. He killed an orderly that was watching him at the hospital. He took off. He could be anywhere and he doesn’t remember any key events.
It turns out Conrad lied about Butler being under surveillance. Yes, they knew the Russians had s spy. They just didn’t know who he was and that’s why he was able to retire like nothing happened. It wasn’t until Kasie cracked the code Butler gave them that the CIA identified Butler as the mole.
They now were trying to cover their behinds. They needed NCIS and NCIS needed to limit the damage. Butler managed to get a hold of a sensitive file called “Project Laurel” from the Navy archives. It was now a matter of national security.
Butler was still acting like a spy. He managed to evade cameras. They found him using one of six payphones that are still operational. Butler had called his home line because he promised to make it up to his son with ice cream. Danny Butler said his dad was often away at work.
He missed a lot of baseball games. His dad always offered to make it up to him with ice cream and NCIS later found Butler at the ice cream shop. Butler was arrested. He was questioned. He claimed that people were out to get him and the only person he was willing to talk to was Sparrow.
Sparrow was the code name of a dirty CIA Officer. He died in the 1970s. Poor Butler thought it was still 1979. Its why he left the message for his son. He thought Danny was still a little kid. He doesn’t remember growing old or Danny moving back in to take care of him for the past ten years.
Butler didn’t remember any of that. Parker tried to tell him that times have changed. The Soviet Union was gone. He showed Butler his cell phone. Butler thought it was all a trick and so Parker showed him photos of Danny growing up. And it was enough.
Butler realized time has passed. He also told NCIS that he hadn’t killed the orderly. It was someone else. It was probably a Russian and so NCIs used Butler. They pretend to go along with his delusion when really it was a trap for Conrad. Conrad was a Russian spy.
He joined the investigation to take out Butler. Butler never committed treason. It was a lie that Conrad came up with. Butler acted as a double agent to feed the Russians bad intel. He was a patriot the whole time. And he helped them arrest Conrad.
Butler was reunited with his son. They went out for ice cream while Torres deleted his dating profile. He hated that he felt like he was undercover with the things he said about himself and so he’s going back to traditional dating.
