In tonight’s S.W.A.T. episode, Hondo came upon a gruesome scene on tonight’s season premiere. He went to a house where he found his chief witness dead. Her throat has been slashed. Her daughter was calling for help from a locked room, but Hondo was delayed in reaching her because he ran into some trouble.
He ran into the killer. They fought. They dropped their guns. They tried to kill each other before the killer ultimately decided to flee while he still could. Hondo checked the house afterwards. He mentioned there was no one else other than the daughter there. And then he did his best to be there for Pia Martinez.
This moment happened ten years ago. There’s been a lot that has happened since then. Hondo later lost contact with Pia. She was no longer a child anymore.
She was all grown up and she moved to Miami. If she wanted to put the past behind her, Hondo wasn’t going to stand in her way. Hondo tried to stay in contact only he too has had to live his life. He went on to take over his squad. He fell in love. He fell in love several times. He became a father. He was living his life when the past came knocking on his door.
The man that killed Pia’s mother was being extradited back to the United States. His name was Verdugo. He was a big shot in the Salvadoran mob. The man was guilty of so many crimes that Mexico City first wanted to try him for murder.
Once that was done, they were willing to extradite him to the United States where he could be tried for Rita Martinez’s murder. Hondo tried contacting Pia to tell her about the case. She wouldn’t answer his calls. He wasn’t even sure she was getting the messages until he went to Mexico City.
Hondo and other members of SWAT were to be the escorting officers on Verdugo’s extradition. Hondo was there for the trade off when he saw Pia in the crowd. She wanted to look her mother’s killer in the face. Only she never got that moment.
Verdugo staged a daring escape with an IED along with several motorcyclists. He was gone before they could stop him. Verdugo got away again and Pia had lost hope. Pia was the one who made the anonymous call that led to Verdugo finally being captured.
Pia dropped out of college. She traveled throughout Central America. She started using dating apps to hook up with guys from all the gangs and it soon led her to Verdugo. She then made the call that got him arrested. She put her faith in the police.
Again! They let her down. Again! Pia told Hondo everything and she said she was done putting her faith in him. Hondo had once promised to keep her mother safe. Pia now feels like she should have known better than believing the police will ever get her justice.
Pia wouldn’t even listen to Hondo cautioning her. He was worried about everything she had to do to get information on Verdugo. He wanted her to be safe and he was worried she would do something drastic. Which is why he did everything possible to try find Verdugo again.
Hondo, Powell, and Commander Hicks were deputized by the Mexican police. This allowed them to officially assist in the investigation on Verdugo including his manhunt. They went on to find one of the motorcyclists that helped in the escape.
His name was Fernando. He said that Verdugo was in the middle of this big deal with a man known as El Barbon. Verdugo was about to hit a huge pay day. He didn’t want to pass on that. It was why he staged such a daring escape. He needed to get paid.
Verdugo had apparently taken part in a heist. He stole a bunch of weapons like RPGs as well as a bomb. Nothing small or anything similar to what he used to escape. This bomb he stole was meant for the Mexican government. It could potentially wipe a city off the map.
The Mexican government wants those weapons found. They didn’t want Verdugo selling them to anyone. The police were able to flip Fernando because they had evidence that he was sleeping with the daughter of a man known as “the Butcher”.
Fernando agreed to talk to them before they talked to the Butcher for him. He told them about the deal. He identified the man known as El Barbon. The cops were able to scare him off. They just didn’t get to arrest him. The man had fled and that meant Verdugo would need to find another broker.
It wasn’t a question of if but when. Verdugo wouldn’t pass up such a large pay day. Hondo tried reaching out to Pia to see if she could find out who’s his new broker and she disappeared. Earlier, she sold him a story of returning home. Of being broke.
Of wanting to finally live her life like her mother wanted. Except Hondo stopped by her hostel to see if she would assist in Verdugo’s capture and he found out that she bought a gun. She did get information on his whereabouts. She just didn’t tell him. She planned on killing Verdugo herself.
Something went wrong with the plan. Verdugo was expecting Pia to show up. He knew she was looking for him. He had captured her by the time the police finally showed. Verdugo then tried hanging Pia to buy himself time to escape again only Hondo was forced to kill him.
Pia’s rope was also shot by Hicks. She was saved and technically the case against Verdugo was over because they couldn’t extradite a dead man. And while they found most of the weapons at the back of the house, the vacuum bomb wasn’t there.
Meaning this wasn’t over.
Pia had only looked for Verdugo because she blamed herself for her mom getting killed. She wasn’t supposed to bring her cell phone when she went in hiding ten years ago and she brought it anyways because she was a teenage girl attached to her phone back then.
She figures that’s how Verdugo found them. Hondo heard her confession only he told her not to buy someone else’s guilt. Meanwhile Powell went on a date with one of the Mexican officers. And unfortunately for her, he proved to be the one that stole the vacuum bomb and so he strangled her into unconsciousness tonight.
There’s no telling what will happen next.
THE END!
