In tonight’s S.W.A.T. episode, the city was experiencing a heatwave. Due to rising temperatures, many believed that tempers were going to rise as well.

Hondo was called in for protection detail and he roped in Gamble to join him. They were brought in to protect Mayor Castro. The mayor made himself pretty popular.

He lowered bonds. It helps innocent people get out of jail and it also causes guilty people a chance to run and/or commit more crimes. Paul Kang hated the new law. He lost a loved one due to it. He was so angry that he shot at the Mayor’s car a few days ago. The LAPD still considered him a credible threat and that’s where the protection detail comes in.

Hondo and Gamble were to follow the Mayor around for a few days. They were supposed to protect him, but it got a little harder when entire neighborhoods experienced blackouts. There were way too many people that take advantage during blackouts. Hondo’s whole team got called in to deal with the fallout.

This included Powell. Powell saw a chess match going when she came in and she picked up one of the pieces on the side. It didn’t affect the game. It did on the other hand affect the curse. There’s this golden rule that it brings bad luck if anyone touches a piece of an ongoing chess match.

Powell hadn’t known about the rule before she did it. Only she didn’t believe once she was told. She tried to push the curse even further by taking one of the pieces with her out on call. She was bragging about it to Deacon when they got into a car accident. Deacon warned her that this was just the start.

The entire day was going to be a write-off. The whole of SAT was going to be affected. Deacon got into the driver seat after the accident. He didn’t want to take more risks with her behind the wheel.

Mico was riding with Tan. He thought they were going to have an easy day. They were assigned to a nice upscale neighborhood and everything was fine until this woman flag them down. She asked them to do a wellness check on her neighbor. He hasn’t left his house in days. He also has a young son.

When SWAT knocked down his door, they found Travis the neighbor overdosing. He also locked his four year old son in his room and the child was dying of dehydration and starvation. Mico found the child. He called for a second ambulance to save the little boy. He also attacked the father.

Mico was so angry on the boy’s behalf that he was going to beat up the dad. Tan had to pull him away. He ordered Mico to focus on the boy and he made sure both father and son went in an ambulance. Tan didn’t like it, but he was going to have to report Mico. Mico crossed a line. He attacked an unarmed citizen with a drug problem. Tan had to write him up. Mico had to be investigated and there’s a chance his career may be over. What might save him was that there were bigger fishes to fry that day.

Powell and Deacon found out that the power didn’t go out on its own. Someone was bombing electrical transformers all around the city. They were hoping to keep the cops busy while they did whatever they want to do.

They could rob a few places. Or they could be seeking to assassinate an elected official. Hondo and Gamble stopped an assassination attempt on Mayor Castor. They arrested Kang and an accomplice. They weren’t sure if the danger was over after the men were arrested. And so they made the Mayor return to City Hall where the security was tight.

The rest of SWAT investigated their bombers. They noticed that one neighborhood kept having their license plates stolen. Deacon and Powell went to the area.

They stumbled across a hostage situation. It led to a shootout when they tried to save the hostage. Powell was almost killed. She was shot in the back. It hit the vest and also convinced Powell that the curse was real.

She tried returning the chess piece. She hoped that had been enough and it wasn’t. She found out that the curse doesn’t lift until the original players finish the game. Something they couldn’t do because they were tracing bombers all around the city.

The shooters got away with their hostage. Powell managed to arrest one guy. They used their suspect to gather information on the rest. He was happy to brag about taking the fight to the city.

The bombers consider themselves to be freedom fighters. They were residents of Owens Valley. It was a small city miles away from LA. Yet, It’s LA that dictates to them what they can and cannot do with their water and land rights. The utility companies were stealing land. They were forcing people off property to make money.

One of the “freedom fighters” said his dad owned a hardware store for thirty years. He was looking to retire when the utility companies from LA told him he wasn’t allowed to sell his business.

He either had to stop paying for it or demolish it. He chose to demolish it. He destroyed thirty years of hard work. He later died from depression and so his son wanted to hurt LA like they hurt Owens Valley. He got arrested, but his friends kidnapped an SCWP engineer. They wanted her help in destroying the city’s water supply.

SWAT caught up to the men at a major dam. The men had shot the engineer when she refused to help them. SWAT found her and got her to an ambulance. They then pursued their bombers.

They took them down one by one. Powell couldn’t get a good shot on the last guy standing. She thought the bomb was going to go off when Hondo stepped in. He took out the last bomber. He left the Mayor in Gamble’s capable hands to help his team. They saved the city. Powell then made sure that chess game was finally finished.

The curse was over!

Gamble meanwhile had an honest conversation with Hondo after everything was done. She was regretting staying in LA. She knew she was being judged for being the daughter of a cop killer and it wasn’t getting easier. She even felt judged by the Mayor’s people. Hondo had to remind her that she was a great cop. She never lets anything get in the way of the job. And she shouldn’t start now.

Tan also didn’t report Mico. He didn’t want Mico to be judged by his worst day. Plus, he heard the little boy they saved was going to go live with his aunt.

THE END!
