In tonight’s S.W.A.T. episode, Deputy Chief Bennett was doing her annual review of SWAT. She was doing it earlier this year because she hopes to apply pressure on Commander Hicks. Hicks ran into a problem with the Deputy Chief’s husband. She was married to Warden David Bennett.
Her husband was facing an inquiry from the Department of Corrections for failing to handle a prison riot and he almost cost several officers their lives. The Warden had threatened to place blame on Hicks when the riot happened, but Hicks didn’t back down. He called the Warden incompetent. He said he would testify against him and now the Warden’s wife just happened to do her review earlier.
The review was going to happen right before Hicks testifies against the Warden. Only Hicks wasn’t scared of the Deputy Chief. He runs a tight ship at SWAT. His people are the very best of LAPD and he knew that.
He also had bigger things to worry about than a review. Officer Tan reported that his girlfriend had been abducted. She was following up a story when several men abducted her from her apartment. Olivia Navarro was a journalist as well as Tan’s girlfriend. Tan saw her get taken. He tried to pursue the van on foot and it was too fast for him.
The kidnappers got away with Olivia. She also wasn’t their only victim. The van that Tan reported had been used in another kidnapping and that involved a federal agent. DEA Special Agent Gabriel Rodado was taken from his home. He was investigating a cartel when somehow they found out about it.
They took him in broad daylight to send a message. Olivia must have been connected to the case in some way. Everyone believed she was probably writing an article against the cartel. They don’t know who was involved in the article or why Olivia was important enough for the cartel to send their second in command.
The man that grabbed her was identified as Pedro Lagarre. He was the second in command to a man known as the “Bloodhound”. The nickname was well-earned.
The Bloodhound was currently in LA. Rodado wasn’t just investigating him. He managed to turn the Bloodhound’s girlfriend against him. Her name is Maria Lozano. She was staying at a safehouse when Rodado felt they had been compromised. He reported it to his bosses. They thought he was being overly vigilant and it turns out he had been right all along.
The Bloodhoud had a mole in the DEA office. He found out where Maria was being held. He went there to go kill her himself and she was gone. Rodado hadn’t taken his boss’s advice on doing nothing. He personally moved Maria to an undisclosed location that only he knew. He didn’t even tell his partner that he was moving her much less where he took her. The Bloodhound initially came to the States to kill Maria. When that didn’t happen, he began kidnapping people in the hope of finding out where Maria was located.
SWAT found out through a criminal informant where the Bloodhound’s people were. They were using a closed storefront. SWAT moved on the building with the DEA. They found and thought they were rescuing Olivia only they were wrong. Olivia was never a prisoner.
She went with the cartel willingly because she planned on interviewing the Bloodhound. The Bloodhound was super concerned about his public image. He wanted to be the new Pablo Escobar. He was building schools and hospitals in Mexico with drug money. And Olivia was willing to play into his vanity to get answers.
Olivia had covered another story a few years ago in Mexico. It was about college students protesting against the government. The kids were really protesting governmental officials taking bribes from the cartel and they were gaining popular support when three student leaders disappeared.
They’ve never been seen since. Olivia was hoping to flatter the Bloodhound into revealing where the bodies were. She wanted to give the families closure and she had no clue they grabbed a DEA Agent. She never saw Rodado. She didn’t even get her chance to carry out the interview with the Bloodhound before she was “rescued”.
Rodado’s partner was ticked off when they found out she wasn’t a hostage. He said they wasted time looking for her. He demanded that they interrogate her until she told them how she got into contact with the Bloodhound. Tan had to remind the guy that Olivia is a journalist. She had a duty to protect her source.
Hicks agreed with Tan. The Deputy Chief also sided with them. They couldn’t break laws in their search for Rodado. Tan sided with Olivia publicly. Privately, he chastised her. He told her that she couldn’t take such risks with her life.
Tan was looking for her for hours. He thought she was being tortured or might already be dead. Tan has been keeping Olivia at arm’s length because he was scared of being hurt again.
His divorce wasn’t the smoothest, but he does care for Olivia. She also seems to care for him. She passed on a job overseas to explore the relationship and so Tan has to be open with her. There was a reason she doesn’t talk her articles out with him. He also didn’t discuss his work with her. They needed to lower some of their walls if the relationship is to last.
With the investigation continuing, the officers were able to find Lagarre. He bragged about Rodado cracking under pressure. He even said that the Bloodhound was heading towards Maria’s location as they speak. He also brought Rodado with him as his prisoner. The cops couldn’t get the gangbangers to open up on what they found. They had to find Maria on their own. They got very lucky when they found Rodado’s phone. Special Agent Bryant was able to crack Rodado’s password because the partners were practically family at this point.
They found out Rodado called up an old friend to use an empty mansion. SWAT went to the location. They found Maria hiding in a hidden room and they were able to rescue Rodado.
They also arrested the Bloodhound. He was locked up when Tan managed to get Olivia that interview she wanted with the cartel boss. Meanwhile, Hondo learned who was sabotaging Gamble. He called the man out and he benched him on top of that. That’s how Deputy Chief Bennet found out about Gamble. She tried to use that to threaten Hicks into saying great things about her husband.
Except the threats didn’t work. Hicks refuses to be blackmailed. He told the Deputy Chief to bring it. He would gladly stand behind his officers.
Deacon also found a rare shoe for his sneakerhead son, but the kid decided to auction it to raise money for his team and so Deacon got to walk away tonight knowing he did well with his son.
THE END!
