In tonight’s The Equalizer episode, Detective Dante agreed to go with his father to a funeral. The funeral was out of the state. His father was out on parole and so he needed Dante to go with him or else he couldn’t go. Dante didn’t want to go. He would have refused if his father hadn’t already told his probation officer about it.

Big Ben essentially tied Dante’s hands. He knew his cop son going would make things easier for him. Dante had to go. He didn’t want his father to get in trouble again. It just didn’t stop him from resenting his father for putting him in such an awkward situation.

Plus, Dante knew his father wasn’t telling him everything. They were attending the funeral of Big Ben’s old partner. Johnny D didn’t go down like Big Ben did. He stayed free.

Dante didn’t know that they were still in contact and so his second reason for going with his father was him wanting answers. He was willing to miss the famous block party to go with his dad. Robyn’s old neighborhood was throwing its annual block party. Robyn was going with her whole family. Harry and Mel were going. Dee even invited her dad to the block party.

Miles loves the block party.

It was a great family tradition. Robyn didn’t take on any new cases because she wanted to enjoy a day off with her loved ones. She was beating her ex-husband in a game of H.O.R.S.E when Dee ran into an old friend. She ran into Cameron.

Cameron was a little older than her. He decided to forgo college in order to kick off his own app. The app was up and running now. He told Dee all about it as they were catching up. He’s been away for a while. He said he was busy with his own company. And his story really inspired Dee.

Dee was also considering skipping college. She didn’t want to start her own company. She wanted to join the military instead. She was telling Cam about it when there was a commotion. It had nothing to do with Mel taking part in the karaoke competition. She killed it by the way. She sounded amazing. Everyone thought so.

This included Miles. Miles enjoyed getting to know Robyn’s friends. He still wanted in on Robyn’s side job. He’s fixed up two people for her and he thinks he can come in handy with her equalizer thing. Robyn told him that she still needed time to think about things. And that’s when the commotion happened.

Someone stole the raffle money. The money was to help a kid from the neighborhood go to college. They raised almost two thousand dollars and so everyone wanted to find out who did it. Mel started asking questions. She found a cameraman that was covering the block party. She was getting answers from him.

Dee was also asking questions because she noticed that Cam’s friend Tyrese was acting weird. Tyrese was nearby to the raffle stand when it got robbed. They asked him if he saw anything. He got really defenseless before walking off to take a call.

He didn’t leave the block party. When Dee told Cam she suspected him, he said that doesn’t make sense. He knew Tyrese. He didn’t think he was guilty. He also said if he did it that he wouldn’t have stuck around. Dee said he could have stayed in order to make himself appear innocent.

Cam hit back that a black man can’t win. If he runs, he’s guilty. If he stays, he’s guilty. Mel showed them the sneakers that the cameraman caught of the thief and it was the same sneakers that Tyrese was wearing.

Cam told Dee that anyone could be wearing those sneakers. He even said he’d test Tyrese. They went up to Tyrese and Cam asked for Tyrese’s car keys because he claimed he left his wallet in his friend’s car.

Tyrese opened his bag to give them the keys when they saw all that money. Tyrese really did steal from the block party. He also has a gun that he pulled out when Cam was asking about the money. Tyrese was holding both Cam and Dee at gunpoint. They were in a side alley. They were pretty much hidden and he could have easily killed the both of them.

Mel came upon them. After she showed up, Tyrese ran off. Just not before he said he needed the money. His sisters were starving. His mother was abusive because she couldn’t afford medication to treat her mental illness.

He couldn’t report her because it would risk his sisters going into foster care. Tyrese was doing what he could to survive and he ran off to save himself. Mel didn’t go after him because she was worried about Dante. Dante never made it to the funeral. He never left the state. He and his dad got waylaid by a couple of gunmen.

It turns out that his dad never volunteered him to act as police escort. The probation officer that Dante spoke to was a fake. She made sure that Dante went on the trip and the plan was to kill the detective alongside his father.

They both ticked off the Blanco family. Big Ben robbed from them back in the day when he was a dirty cop. Dante also shut down their casinos in current times and arrested a heavy hitter. They both upset the family. The family then decided to kill them at the same time. They tried to run them off the road.

When that didn’t kill them, they pursued them. Dante injured his leg. His father got shot in the stomach. Big Ben thought he was going to die and so he finally came clean to Dante.

He told him that he has another son. It’s why he always running off when Dante was a kid. It’s also why he became a dirty cop. He needed money to afford two families. He was telling Dante about his brother when they got into another shootout with the Blanco family. Dante was outnumbered as well as outgunned.

He and his dad were going to die when Robyn suddenly shows up. She was worried when she didn’t hear from him. She had Harry track him down and she saved the two men from dying.

The hospital had to induce a coma for Big Ben. There’s every sign in the world that he’ll make it. That he’ll wake up soon. Only Dante was now allowing himself to be angry with his dad. He was angry at his dad for missing a lot of his life. He was angry that he has a secret brother. It didn’t fully explain why his dad cancelled on his kids, but his half-brother was probably connected to that too.

And Robyn never got to enjoy a day off. She was flirting with Miles. He asked her out. She was even considering it when she remembered all the reasons why they didn’t work out.

The secrets came between them then and it would come between them now. She couldn’t let him become a part of the equalizer side. He wouldn’t understand it. One of them also had to be safe for Dee. Dee didn’t tell her parents about Tyrese or the gun. She also had Mel keep it a secret. She thought Tyrese needed help. Not judgement.

THE END!
