In tonight’s The Good Doctor series finale, Dr. Aaron Glassman informed Shaun that his cancer was back. He just got Hannah into rehab. He repaired his relationship with Shaun and now he was going to die. Shaun hadn’t wanted to accept that at first. He loved Glassman like a father.
He also considered that medicine has advanced since his previous surgery. His previous surgery was once a miracle. The fact the cancer was back didn’t deter Shaun. He hosted a meeting with the top doctors. He showed them Glassman’s file. He wanted suggestions to save his mentor’s life. Lim was the first to guess the patient was Glassman. And she knew that Glassman didn’t want any intervention.
If he wanted it, he would been at the meeting. Glassman has accepted his death. Lim thought she should do the same. It was just Shaun that refused to give up. Shaun wanted to fix Glassman like he did the last time. He couldn’t face losing him. Park realized that. He told the interns that it’s okay.
They don’t have to come up with crazy ideas. He also told Morgan that they have to support Shaun until he himself realizes that there was no way to save Glassman. They can on the other hand save Claire.
Claire passed out during the wedding reception. She was rushed back to the hospital. She had an infection that was resisting all medication. The doctors needed to bring her immune system up so that it can fight infection for her. She went on to have sceptic shock. Shaun was called away to treat it.
The best form of treating it was putting Clair in a coma. There was a chance that she might never come out of the coma on her own and so it was a risk. Did she want to take that risk with her life or does she want to slowly die without it?
Glassman was focused on Claire. Everyone was focused on Claire. It was just Shaun that kept looking through Glassman’s file. He wanted to find an answer.
Charlie might have given him one. She found a new technique that would shrink Glassman’s tumor. Just enough that the rest could be treated with chemotherapy. Shaun looked into it. He’s trying to make it work with Glassman. Lim had to eventually tell him that both of his friends were dying. There’s no telling if he can save Glassman, but he was being a bad friend by not acknowledging Claire could be dying as well.
After the confrontation, Shaun looked into other ways to save Claire’s life. He nixed the coma idea. He instead found a bacteria that could kill her infection and just the infection.
Shaun came up with an idea plan. He had the help of doctors to assist him. He just couldn’t save Glassman. Glassman didn’t want to try another miracle surgery. He knew that the cancer could always back. He didn’t want to spend the rest of his life fighting when he could enjoy what little time he had left. He finally told Shaun that he was giving up and it got through to Shaun.
Shaun allowed himself to be angry with Glassman. He couldn’t believe that Glassman was giving up. He called him a quitter. He yelled at him. He threw his stuff away.
He put all his focus back on Claire. Only it wasn’t enough. The idea to infect with her a less dangerous bacteria could only work if they found the right bacteria out of a billion options. It took them a few days. They eventually found it. They merely needed to apply for a compassionate use from the CDC to use it. The CDC turned them down.
Shaun didn’t know what to do after that. He didn’t know how else to save his friend. He was out of ideas and so he called Glassman and Lea to the hospital. He wanted to tell them that he was going to inject Claire with the bacteria in spite of the CDC’s refusal. He didn’t care that he would lose his job.
He cares for Claire too much to say goodbye to her. Not when he was already saying goodbye to Glassman. Glassman also didn’t want Shaun to risk his career. He agreed to ignore the CDC and implant the bacteria into Claire. He was dying anyways. He didn’t need his license to do that.
The show didn’t show the immediate effects of that decision. They instead fast-forward a few years. They showed Shaun as Chief of Surgery at a San Jose Hospital and showed the past as memories.
Shaun spent Glassman’s final moments with him. They visited the carousel that reminded Glassman of his daughter. Shaun visited the area after Glassman’s death. Morgan and Park officially adopted Eden. Dom became a pediatrician. Jordan got back with her ex. Charlie started training the new batch of interns.
Shaun and Lea had a second child, a daughter. Their children grew up to be wonderful. Claire also got to live. She realized she never stopped loving Jared and so they got together. They even have a child together in the future. And everyone showed up at the symposium Shaun was leading.
Shaun was in a good place with good friends and he still thinks about Glassman fondly.
THE END!
