On tonight’s The Voice season 25 episode 20 as per the NBC synopsis, “The top 5 artists perform a ballad and up-tempo song in front of coaches Chance the Rapper, Dan + Shay, John Legend and Reba McEntire to compete for the title of “The Voice.” Viewers will have the chance to vote for their favorite artist overnight.”

On tonight’s The Voice episode, it was Night 1 of the Season Finale. The artists performed twice tonight. They had to do an up tempo number as well as a ballad. Which for most of them wasn’t too hard. Team John’s Nathan Chester was up first. His first number was up-tempo. He performed “It’s Your Thing” by The Isley Brothers. The song has so much energy that Nathan had fun with it. He let it go during those high notes. He started out his performance with a certain stiffness. He wasn’t dancing or swaying. Or merely rocking it out on the stage. He stayed glued to that microphone at first and he gained confidence throughout the performance to branch out.
Nathan started dancing towards the middle. He rearranged the song towards the end. He gave a great performance. Especially for such an important night. He gave that stage his all and that left everyone else having to follow something nearly perfect. Next up was Team Reba’s Josh Sanders. He was ten years old when he held his first drum sticks. He’s loved music ever since. He performed a ballad first tonight. He chose the song “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill. Josh heard that song in church and he reconnected with his roots.
Josh’s performance was very moving. He had been thinking about his girls back home. He has such a great voice and it was great for Country. Now he has to wait before he finds out if it was also great for the show. Team Reba continued on. Her second artist performed next. Asher HaVon was perhaps the prettiest contestant of the night. He looked flawless. This includes the makeup. His style was always on point. He even channeled the disco era with his up-tempo song. He chose “Last Dance” by Donna Summer. The song may have started out as a ballad, but it quickly became up-tempo.
Throughout the whole performance, Asher had all eyes on him. His performance was just perfect. John later told him to stick with that era because it does wonderful things with his voice. He really thought Asher would be great in disco. Disco never died, folks. It merely went away for a while. It’s back now. Another thing that came back was Team John’s turn. His artist Bryan Olsen performed next. Bryan spoke tonight about his mom never getting to see him perform. She managed to get him the guitar he always wanted in spite of it being expensive. She sadly never got to see him officially play it. And he dedicated his performance tonight to her.
Bryan performed “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone. It has a rock element while still being a ballad. It was right up Bryan’s field and everyone thought the performance was incredible. He even moved John Legend to tears. John said he felt Bryan’s loss. He was glad to be there to witness it. Next up was Dan + Shay’s sole artist tonight, Karen Waldrup. She was originally aiming for Reba team when Reba got blocked by the guys. Karen would later say it was a blessing in disguise because the guys made for great coaches.
Karen performed “What Hurts The Most” by Rascal Flatts. It was a notoriously difficult song. The guys still gave it to Karen because they wanted to bring out Karen’s strong vocals. Karen later looked great for her performance. She couldn’t beat Asher in stylishness only she did put on a great show. All the artists were great with their first songs. They then had to come back to do it all over again with their second songs. Up first for their second performance was Josh. Josh chose “Boots On” for his up-tempo. Reba would later say that he could win the whole show based on that one performance.
The Randy Houser song was right up Josh’s alley. He was wonderfully on point with the song. He had fun with it and that usually makes the best performances. Josh also threw his hat during the performance because he remembered Reba mentioning his hat. She said she wanted to see him without the cowboy hat for once. Josh chose to give her that tonight because it was his last chance before the results are revealed. Next up was Nathan. Nathan had written a beautiful letter to his friends. And he received a wonderful surprise when his girlfriend Emily arrived in time for his second performance.
Nathan performed “A Song for You” for his ballad. It was by Leon Russell. It brought out a softer side to Nathan. He remained flawless vocally. He and John chose that song to highlight Nathan as the full package. Some were even saying they would check out his Las Vegas residency when that comes up. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that it will come up. The next performance was by Keith Urban. He played a part this season as the Mega Mentor. It was only fair that he had a moment all to himself.
The show also highlighted many great causes. Like Red Nose Day. Carson Daily also spoke with some servicemen and women. Memorial Day was coming up soon. The members of the United States Army Field Band came to the stage to perform in honor of that. It was a way to honor everyone that wears the uniform. They performed “Brother” by Needtobreathe. They sounded so good that they could have been actual contestants this season of “the Voice”. And funnily enough the lead singer joined the military to get away from singing, so it was a full circle moment to be performing for them.
Next up was Bryan. Bryan was the only Rock ‘N Roll singer. He and John decided he should perform “Freedom 90” by George Michaels because it would be perfect for Bryan. Bryan got a dynamic voice. He needed an up-tempo song. What’s better than George Michaels. The song was such a feel good song that people would instantly recognize it and sing along with Bryan. It’s what ended up happening with the audience. And Karen went on after Bryan with her up-tempo song, “I’m Alright”.
It was by Jo Dee Messina. Karen went cowgirl chic with her second performance. She rocked her cowboy hat and everything from her bodysuit to her jacket had fringe on it. Karen has a great voice. She was the sole woman left. She was competing against guys and she was doing more than holding her own. She was on fire tonight. Her coaches sang along with her. Last up was Asher. Asher learned many wonderful things from the Queen of Country. He loves himself some Reba. Reba also loves Asher. And that’s why she wanted him to have a softer moment.
Asher has always pushed ahead with his powerhouse of a voice. She wanted him to display his softer side with his ballad. His performance of “I Will Always Love You” was perfect in that sense. It was originally by Dolly Parton. It was best known for being Whitney Houston’s big hit. Asher performed a mixture of their versions. He even forwent the wig for his second performance. He toned everything back. And it was his song that closed out the night on a high note.
