The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers reveal that fans have been tossing around all kinds of theories on social media about Connor Newman’s (Judah Mackey) mental health storyline, but what is the truth about Connor’s condition?
Some viewers are convinced that Connor’s facility is shady and are calling for his parents to get him out of there.
Other fans have even accused Connor of faking his condition to get Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) and Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) back together.
However, there’s a significant reason why those theories aren’t true – and it all boils down to Y&R Head Writer and Executive Producer Josh Griffith’s personal experience.
Earlier this month, Griffith was part of a panel called Changing the Narrative: Children’s Mental Health in Entertainment & Media, where he opened up about his inspiration for Connor’s OCD storyline.
It turns out Griffith has a daughter with OCD, so she struggled with the condition for years before finally getting a diagnosis at the age of 26.
Griffith’s goal with this storyline is spreading awareness about the actual condition and showing the treatment process.
It’s about clearing up confusion regarding OCD and exploring this very real issue that affects so many people.
After the panel, Griffith spoke to TVLine and further stressed his desire to get this story right.
“It was really important to me because there’s been such a misunderstanding of what OCD is — it’s often the brunt of a joke, ‘Oh, my OCD is acting up today!’ — when it’s so much more complex and terrifying than that,” Griffith said.
Now that Connor has been diagnosed, he’s on “a very emotional and ultimately gratifying journey to a better place…”
It’ll take some work for Connor to deal with what he’s up against psychologically, so Griffith confirmed this is a long-term story and talked about all the research that’s gone into it.
With that in mind, there’s no way Josh Griffith would write that Connor’s faking his condition or that his facility is somehow evil like some fans have suggested.
Of course, Adam and Chelsea could still get back together on their own now that they’re bonding like this, but Connor isn’t scheming to make that happen.
This mental health storyline is the real deal – complete with PSAs at the end of certain episodes – so Y&R’s being extremely careful about how they present it.
