Colton Shaw was back at it tonight. This time he was looking for a teenage girl. Her name is Emmaline Trace. She was sixteen. She disappeared from Prior, Kentucky.
The reward money to find her wasn’t that high, but Velma had a bad feeling about this one. The girl’s parents died ten years ago. Her older brother had custody of her.
He could only put up five thousand only Velma knew that was his complete savings. She also knew that if Emmaline wasn’t found in the next few days that she was gone for good. Colter must have agreed with her because he happily took the case. He headed to Kentucky.
One of the first things Colter did when he reached was question the brother. Jasper and his sister were still new to the area. They moved there from Tennessee. Jasper took a job in mining. Its why they moved there. The company has union and great benefits.
He needed all the help to raise his sister. They were really close. He knew in his gut that she wouldn’t run off and leave him by himself. His sister was a kinder person than that. She also wouldn’t leave while he faced harassment from the rest of the town on his own.
The town of Prior weren’t welcoming to newbies. They saw Jasper as stealing one of their jobs and they treated the siblings horribly. Someone was leaving roadkill on their porch. It happened every few days. Colter quickly tracked down the person doing so and the guy did not care about getting caught.
Or even wanted to help find Emmaline. The town was full of jerks like him. Colter went to the coffee shop where Emmaline used to work. She was fired a few weeks back. The owner said she fired her because Emmaline delved in witchcraft.
The owner also spat in Colter’s coffee. He knew better than to trust that woman. He asked one of her employees what happened and that’s when he was told about Travis McCannis. The man made a huge a scene at the shop by yelling at Emmaline.
Colter later learned the man did that because Emmaline promised his cancer stricken wife that she could cure her.
Travis hadn’t believed her and he thought she was feeding his wife false hope. Its what led to the massive scene. Then Emmaline was able to do what she said could. She cured Shirley.
Shirley’s cancer went away. She was also now expecting a child that she and her husband have been trying for since the start of their marriage. The couple feel like they owe everything to Emmaline. She was a great herbalist. Neither Shirley nor Travis would harm Emmaline after what she gave them.
The only thing Emmaline asked in return was that it be kept a secret. She didn’t want her brother to find out. He would have told her to stop if he knew what she was doing. Jasper and Emmaline’s mother was also a healer.
Some praised her. Some felt she worked for the devil. Jasper wasn’t sure if the fire that killed his parents was an accident or intentionally arson and so he jumped at the chance to start over somewhere fresh. Emmaline didn’t know about the danger, but she did find her mother’s old recipe books.
She felt she had to help. She just didn’t realize how hard it was to keep a secret in a small town. Emmaline was grabbed because someone wanted her help in getting healed. Colter found out the people that grabbed Emmaline were the Drell Clan.
The Drells had lived up the mountain for centuries. They kept to themselves for the most part. Jasper didn’t even know that his property was right next to their land. The Drells grabbed Emmaline while she was foraging for ingredients. The patriarch of the Drell clan was sick.
He was dying. They grabbed Emmaline hoping she could cure him and she tried to do just that. Colter quickly found her on the mountain. He tried to get her out of there. Only she didn’t want to leave until she had cured the old man.
Emmaline felt she had a duty to help the sick. She hid Colter. She then tried to cure the patient. The man’s sons didn’t like what she was doing. They felt she was making their father worse and so they pulled a gun on her. They were going to kill Emmaline when Colter intervened.
He shot one of them. He got Emmaline off the property. They were running through the woods. They were being hunted by men on ATVs. Emmaline injured herself by trying to go fast and they couldn’t make it back to her house. They detoured to an abandon store that was nearby.
The Drells caught up to them at the store. They sent men inside to look for Colter and Emmaline. Colter tried to get them out of there. He couldn’t rely on his gun because he just had the one bullet left. He instead tried to use his tracker skills and unfortunately he was no match for the Drells.
Colter got shot by an arrow gun. It stuck him to the wall. The Drells took off with Emmaline. Colter was left to bleed out when he pulled off one last move. He took out one of the two men dragging off Emmaline. She was able to fight off the other.
They both knew it wouldn’t be enough to save her. They were both about to die when the Drells learned that Emmaline did save Big Pop. He was healed and he was sitting up and talking.
The Drells still planned on kidnapping Emmaline so that they could use her in the future when she threatened to curse them. She said as easily as she can heal, she can also curse. She threatened to curse the whole Drell line if they didn’t let her go and so they let her go.
She called 911 for an ambulance for Colter. He was going to be alright. And the police have enough evidence to arrest the Drells.
Emmaline was reunited with her brother. She also left an ointment for Colter. Colter was glad that everyone was safe and the whole situation made him miss his own sister. He called her while he was leaving town.
