In tonight’s Welcome To Plathville episode, Olivia was back in Minnesota to finalize the divorce. She was ready to move on. Her husband felt differently. Ethan wants his marriage back and his inconsistency merely reminded Olivia why they didn’t work out in the first place.
Ethan was inconsistent in everything. He loved Olivia one minute. He supported her one minute. He then asked Olivia to change everything about herself in the next.
He wasn’t happy. She wasn’t happy. Why hold onto that? Ethan called it quits on their relationship and she’s been gone for months. He didn’t call her. He didn’t reach out to her. He waited until she showed up on the doorstep to suddenly have doubts.
Olivia was over it. She wasn’t going back to the girl she was when she married him. She grew as a person. She moved away from her family’s religious lifestyle.
She was now more liberal than she was before. She didn’t want to go back to a way of life that suited him and told her to be quiet. He also didn’t want the new her. He would be fine with that version of her for a few months before ultimately changing his mind. He couldn’t give Olivia the consistent love she deserved. And it seems to be a family trait.
Ethan’s parents are also getting a divorce. Kim Plath wanted out of her marriage. She wasn’t getting what she needed from Barry and Barry pretended to listen to her all the while dragging out the divorce. He hasn’t even acknowledged Kim’s boyfriend. Ken has tried to introduce himself.
Barry just pretends he doesn’t exist. He also pretends like Kim hasn’t tried to divorce him for the past two years. Barry wont even sleep in their old room because it reminds him of Kim. He gave Moriah that room. Its bigger than her last apartment.
Barry wasn’t ready to move. Maybe that’s why Ethan wasn’t ready to move on as well. He probably thought deep down that his mom was coming back and that’s why he doesn’t close the door on his marriage to Olivia. Olivia meanwhile was talking about dating again.
She hasn’t gotten the courage to do so yet. It’s just a thought at this point. Only she was considering it. She’s never really dated. She got married when she turned legal and she has no idea how to date much less be with someone other than Ethan. And she’s still willing to give it a try.
As for Ethan, he hasn’t told anyone about the divorce. He didn’t even tell his family. He waited until he could visit them in person. Both Moriah and Micah were in town. Lydia was at the house. Ethan’s visit was supposed to be light. He tried to be the old jokester that he was growing up.
His father on the other hand saw the pain in Ethan’s eyes. He chose to let Ethan say his news for himself. Ethan eventually told everyone that he’s getting a divorce. He didn’t go into details. He just said he and Olivia are getting a divorce.
Ethan told them that he was feeling rushed to sign divorce papers. His father told him to take his time. The other kids gave Barry some alone time with Ethan. So, that gave Barry free range to advise Ethan. He said that it would be like the stages of grief. There will be anger, depression, and even bargaining.
Barry seemed to have come out on the other side to his kids. With his wife, he was still playing games and refusing to divorce her. It’s good thing that Kim wasn’t in town. She took the younger kids out on the houseboat to take them to Florida.
Kim would have told Ethan not to drag things out while he’s processing everything. She moved on. Olivia was moving on. Olivia went to a psychic. She wanted to know her future. She was told that she would reunite with Ethan. They would have two children. They will try to date other people before realizing that they love each other.
The psychic said Ethan was her forever love. Olivia just didn’t trust it because she struggles with abandonment. Olivia also lost her youngest brother. He died recently and Olivia was still grieving. And the psychic picked up on that.
The psychic was scary good. Olivia was a little afraid of her after everything and she couldn’t wait to leave.
