Severide’s brother was back at Firehouse 51. Damon knew things would be different this time. He got dumped by Kidd and now he has to prove he has what it takes. There was no room for error. It’s also why he ended things with Novak. The two of them started sleeping with each other last week. They have fun together and he really likes her, but he couldn’t bring baggage back into 51. He had to end things and he was a little sad when Novak didn’t disagree. She was fine with going back to friends. Novak wasn’t someone that gets personally attached.

The one exception to that rule was Violet. Violet and Novak are super close. Novak even went as far to warn her about wiring that letter to Carver and she subtly brings up Flynn a lot. She wanted Violet to see that she has a good thing going with Flynn. It shouldn’t get thrown away for a guy in rehab. Not when they didn’t know if Carver was coming back after rehab. Its why she mentioned Flynn. Flynn was a lawyer. He’d have an idea about all the true crime podcasts that she listens to. He was also good for Violet. Flynn offered stability.

Novak and Violet didn’t get much time to discuss romantic lives at first because of an accident. There was a woman that accidentally drove into a mall. She pinned a young girl under the car. The firehouse was called to the scene. Chief Pascal saw that the child and he couldn’t help himself. He yelled at the driver. He told her she was to blame if that child died. Pascal recently lost his own wife in a car accident and this was triggering for him. The driver also admitted she looked down for a minute. She was most likely checking her phone when she crashed the car.

After the paramedics got the girl to the hospital, Violet finally mentioned Flynn. She confessed to Novak that she hasn’t returned his calls lately and so she promised to call him at the end of shift. Though tonight the shift tonight was a long one. They got called to a gym. There was a guy that was struggling to breathe. The machine fell on him. He fell across his neck. It cut off his air supply only the other people said he was acting off long before he fell into the machine. And he wasn’t responding to an increase in oxygen.

The paramedics brought him to the hospital. It was up to the doctors to find out what’s wrong with him. Only something about it bugged Violet. She did as she promised. She still called Flynn. He agreed to meet her at Molly’s like nothing happened and she should have been thinking about the future of their relationship and instead she kept thinking of that case. Novak thought she was looking for an out from Flynn. She tried to talk to Violet about it. Then she remembered she didn’t hand off a report in and she had to go back inside.

Novak saw Pascal in his office. He was still struggling from the call earlier. He thought going back to work would help him and now he doesn’t know if he did the right thing. He was feeling insecure when Novak helped him. She helped him to see he was a great firefighter. He went into work the next morning feeling better about himself. Damon the other hand was now struggling because of his relationship with Novak. Sure, things ended but he didn’t know how to act around her. Its why he tried to avoid her and unfortunately they both ended up at Molly’s.

Novak was cool. It was just Damon that couldn’t look her in the eye anymore. He was also thrown when she offered to introduce him to one of her friends. Damon didn’t know what to do and eventually made a mistake at work. He snagged one of the hose lines. They needed a new one and he offered to pay for it. Herrmann told him that accidents were fine. He also taught Damon to never agree to pay for anything. It was the city’s job to pay for the equipment. Offering to pay for something was worse than the actual crime.

Damon just needed to know he had a permanent place at 51 and Herrmann assured him of that.

Violet also met up with Flynn. He could tell she was holding back. Which she downplayed. She didn’t feel ready to open up to him and this thing with Carver was giving her the excuse she needed to run away from a good thing. Violet and Novak’s first call the next shift was to another member of that gym. The guy had some kind of rash on him. He could be sceptic. Violet was worried about what was happening there. She thought maybe they were using the same steroids. She was trying to solve a new mystery when another mystery came across Kidd’s desk.

Kidd was still doing her “Girls On Fire” program. She usually takes high school girls. She made an exception tonight for Natalie because Natalie seemed like she really wanted to be a firefighter. Natalie was thirteen. She claimed she found out about the program at the community center only it doesn’t explain how she knew Kidd rose up through the ranks. Or how she found out about the program. She never discussed it with the woman that run the community center. She also gave a fake address.

Natalie didn’t leave a number. So, when Kidd kicked her out of the program for smoking, she checked up on her. She found out the address was fake. She found out she was looking into Kidd’s personal life. She has no idea who Natalie was or what she was up to. Kidd kept digging. She found out that Natalie was a child she saved on a call. Natalie had been four at the time. Kidd didn’t recognize her and she thought it odd that Natalie would come up with a fake story when the real one would have easily gotten her into the door.

Violet later got proof that Kettle Fitness was selling some cheap steroids. The owner of the gym was arrested and the gym was raided by the cops. Violet stopped them before they could hurt anyone else. She was talking to Novak about people not settling for a good thing. The topic of Flynn being implied when Carver texted. He was coming back next shift. And Violet wasn’t sure how she felt about it.

And Pascal started packing up his late’ wife’s things tonight.
