In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Dr. Mitch Ripley lost a friend. His childhood best friend. His friend Sully had cancer. He didn’t try to fight it at first and that cost him crucial time he could have spent with his loved ones. Now Sully’s gone. Ripley as a doctor was upset because he felt he should have saved his friend.
He also thinks he doesn’t deserves good things now because he let down his friend. Ripley went out drinking with his buds. They drank in Sully’s honor. Ripley’s girlfriend couldn’t partake in the celebrations. She was a recovering addict and so she left first.
Asher didn’t want to keep explaining to Ripley’s drunk friends that she was an addict. They kept trying to get her drink. She couldn’t be around people like that and so she left.
She thought Ripley wouldn’t be that far behind her only he never showed up at her apartment. Asher next saw him at the hospital. He was asleep in the on call room. He has no idea how he got there. He was missing his cell phone. He was very much hungover and Asher advised him to call in sick. She knew from experience that working with a hangover wasn’t going to be great.
Only Ripley thought he’d be fine after a couple cups of coffee. He was wrong about that. He was treating a young girl whose parents thought her appendix had ruptured. Ripley checked her.
He didn’t find any signs of that. He ordered a few tests. Doris also covered for him by reminding him to order some other tests as well. Ripley wasn’t at his best. He was so caught up in his own feelings that he didn’t even realize that Asher was dealing with stuff of her own. There was a pregnant woman that was rushed into the ED.
Asher did her best to save both. She had to perform a c-section. The last time she did that she had lost a patient. Thankfully, things were different now. Asher saved mother and child.
The baby was a premie and was showing signs already of being a fighter. Asher wasn’t worried about the baby girl. It was the mother that concerned her. Viv was brought in because cops believed someone attacked her and threw her off the bridge. Viv’s husband also believed that as well when he spoke with his wife. And she devastated everyone in that room.
Viv wasn’t attacked. She jumped. She’s been hearing voices. They’ve been telling her to harm herself. She just wanted to make the voices stop and so she tried to kill herself and her baby. Viv had a breakdown. Her husband unfortunately couldn’t understand that, but both Asher and Nurse Jackie did.
Jackie started cutting herself to deal with all the trauma she faced on a daily basis. She stayed at a psych ward for a few days. She got better. It simply didn’t save her marriage to her husband. He wanted a divorce. He also wanted to take their daughter to Wyoming.
Jackie understood Viv the best. She had to escort Viv’s husband out of the room. Will couldn’t believe she would try to harm their unborn child and Jackie came through once again when she sent for Dr. Charles. Charles is a great therapist. He spoke with Viv. He learned that her psychosis shifted when she first became pregnant.
Something not a lot of people know about was the fact that pregnancy can affect the mind and the body. Viv asked Charkes if she could see her daughter. He said they’ll get there in time.
Charles first wanted to determine if she remains a threat to her daughter. He couldn’t risk introducing them until Viv was cleared. Asher left the room to enjoy a quick lunch when she ran into her boyfriend.
Ripley had just gotten thrown off the little girl’s case. She was fine when Ripley checked her on the first time and he returned from lunch to find her crashing. He didn’t know what was wrong with her. Her tests all came back clean. Asher suggested he might have missed something because of the state he was in and he bit her head off.
Ripley swore he would never put a patient at risk. He was later vindicated when it turns out it was Doris that made a mistake. Doris took out morphine for two patients at the same time. She gave the adult dosage to the little girl. She gave the child dosage to the adult man. The man was crying out in pain when Dr. Lenox came by.
Lenox demanded why Doris would give him such a low dose and that’s when Doris realized that she made a mistake. An honest mistake. She overdosed little Abby Campbell. The little girl was given Narcan and she was awake before they knew it.
Ripley had nothing to do with what happened. He probably should have stuck around to supervise Doris, but now Doris might get fired for this. Dr. Lenox wanted to fire her.
She even argued with Maggie about it. Maggie thought a mistake shouldn’t destroy someone’s career and so Lenox threatened to take this to the board if Doris wasn’t fired. Lenox pretty much said that one way or another Doris was going to leave the hospital. The old Sharon Goodwin would have demanded it and that’s why it’s a good thing she’s not her old self.
Sharon has been dealing with trauma since she returned to work. Her hands start shaking. She forgets where she is. She saw her office and it just reminded her that she almost died there. Sharon went to Dr. Abrams because she thought there was something neurologically wrong. He checked her out and he said she was fine.
He still gave her a recommendation with a therapist. The therapist was his aunt by marriage. And she was someone outside of the hospital where Sharon worked, which meant she didn’t have to worry about anyone finding out she was in therapy.
Sharon wouldn’t recover overnight. She still has to deal with her issues. She also has to deal with her nurse shortage. Doris was a great nurse. She’s been a nurse for the past fifteen years.
She’s even been nominated for her great work ethic. Doris made one mistake today and that’s because she was overworked. They fired nearly half the hospital a few months back. Doris has been picking up the slack since then. It wasn’t good for her or the patients. Maggie threatened to quit if Dories was fired. And the hospital couldn’t lose the both of them.
Viv’s husband also went to a judge for a court order in the meantime. He wanted to file a protection order against his wife. He didn’t want her around their daughter and told the judge that Viv’s mental illness made her dangerous. Once again this situation reminded Jackie of her own.
Jackie’s ex-husband was trying to take their kid to Wyoming because that’s where his family was. He didn’t think about what was best for the girl or them having to co-parent. Jackie therefore saw it as a hopeful sign when the lawyer didn’t rule against Viv.
Viv was allowed to see her baby. She had supervised visits right now while they’re both in the hospital. Charles and Jackie were both happy for her. Jackie might have gotten a little flirty with Charles after that. Only he shut that down. He was still her doctor and he couldn’t destroy that relationship.
And Ripley went out drinking again. Asher tried to warn him that he was a developing a problem with that. He ignored her and he went out drinking. He got into a fight with someone. That same someone becomes his patient next week.
THE END!
