The Emergency Department was forever crowded. There had been another hospital nearby. Only it closed its doors and Gaffney was dealing with the overflow. It was the worst time to be short-staffed. Ripley remained suspended without pay. There was also a representative from the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals.
They were like health inspectors for hospitals. They meant business and they were the ones that actually closed down Jackson Monroe Hospital. It was technically their fault that the hospital was as crowded as it is. And Alistair Reed started off his review of the hospital as a jerk.
Reed pretended to be a patient at first. He was a non-emergency patient. He was told to stay in the waiting area and he kept getting bumped by patients in far more serious conditions. Well, he took that to be a mark against the hospital. He waited an hour and that was too much for. He went to Doris.
He announced himself as being a representative. Maggie had him brought instantly to Sharon. Sharon was trying to talk Reed into treating her staff with respect when a potential scandal blew right into the ED.
There was a teenager that came in with a gunshot wound. He had accidentally been shot by his older brother. Both were sons of Alderman Whitlocker of the City Council and his wife. The hospital couldn’t treat this like a special case just because their father was in local government.
They had to report a gunshot wound. They also had to report what the older son said. The older kid told the doctors that his brother was shot from above and so they asked how he knew that. He then told them that he was the one that shot him.
This wasn’t just some toddler that made a mistake. It was an adult that almost killed a near adult. The victim was Brayden. The older brother was Jeremiah. The sons and the mom moved to a rough neighborhood. The parents recently split. Jeremiah got a gun to protect the family.
He didn’t know his brother slipped out in the night and so when he heard someone trying to enter the house through a window – he shot what he thought was an intruder. It wasn’t done maliciously. He wouldn’t have even faced charges if the gun was legally registered.
The gun was illegal. He was going to face charges for having it. Dr. Frost also noticed something off with the family dynamics. The mother has some cuts to her hand. It looked serious.
Dr. Lenox was helping treat Brayden and she didn’t notice anything off, but Lenox tends to have a myopic view in the hospital. She didn’t care about the family troubles.
She only cared about her patient and her patient got shot in the heart. He needed surgery or he was going to die. Lenox rushed into the OR with him when Maggie found out that someone drugged Dr. Archer.
Archer treated a guy that just came from a rave. He and his buddies were so out of it. One of them thought it would be funny to put a “special” sticker on Archer and he was left drugged out of his mind. Maggie had to admit him as a patient. She also tried hiding him from Reed. Reed was taking notes of everything.
He thought the trash cans were too close together. He hated that the nurses kept running away from him. He wasn’t being fair to the hospital. He should be helping them to get better and he seemed focused on finding fault where there was none.
The ED was so full that Asher was helping with patients. There was a preteen girl that came in with her mother. The mother requested a female doctor.
She also didn’t want the doctors to discuss Ariana’s menstrual cycle or run a pregnancy test. The mother wanted to keep her daughter naïve. Which was why Arianna hasn’t told her mother everything. She borrowed a tampon from a friend at camp. She accidentally left it in and she suffered toxic shock because of it. Arianna also couldn’t tell the doctors about it because her mother remained in the room.
Arianna would rather die than admit to her mother that she used a tampon. Jeremiah meanwhile would rather go to prison than admit it was his mother that shot Brayden.
It really was an accident. Olivia thought someone was breaking in. She shot Brayden because she was worried he might be his father. The father was abusive. He intentionally hurt his children. If Olivia comes forward, her ex-husband will get custody of the still underage Brayden and she knew that one day he’d go too far. Its why she and Jeremiah lied about what happened.
The only one that didn’t fall for it was Frost. He recognized the cuts on Olivia’s hand to be blowback from firing a gun. He confronted her and she begged him to not say anything.
She was prepared to sacrifice one son to save the other. Frost thought that was wrong. He tried reporting to Lenox. Only she didn’t care. She told him that their priority was the patient. They saved Brayden’s life. It was the only thing that mattered and Olivia eventually came clean on her own. She didn’t want her son taken to prison.
Olivia admitted she shot her son because she thought he was her abusive ex breaking in. The Alderman pretended like she was crazy. He gaslit her. He did the same with their sons and he didn’t hide the fact that he was going after full custody now.
He probably would have gotten it too if Lenox hadn’t come forward. Lenox ran x-rays on Brayden. She found proof that the Alderman was beating his son. Jeremiah also agreed to have his bones x-rayed as well. He was turning eighteen in a week. He agreed to not press charges against his dad as long as he got custody of his brother. And so Lenox saved the day.
Also, a drugged out Archer saved the hospital. Archer was a philosophical druggie. He talked to people about being seen and he was far kinder when he was drugged out of his mind than when he was sober. He ended up saving the hospital after a nice long chat with Reed. He even helped Asher realize something.
She couldn’t be the one that saved Ripley. He has to save himself. Asher later broke up with him. Just as he realized she was the love of his life. And after he got kissed by someone else.
THE END!
