Dr. Hannah Asher ended things with Dr. Mitch Ripley. He was a good guy. He was in love with her. She might even have been in love with him. Yet, she ended things because she could see that Ripley was spiraling out. He was drinking all the time.
He was putting his medical license at risk. He was reverting back to an older version of himself and no one liked that version. He himself didn’t like that version. Its why he went back to church. He hasn’t been in one in years and he went there the other day because he needed help.
He needed the quiet because his thoughts were too loud. And the church helped him get priorities in order.
It helped Ripley see that Asher was the one. She was worth fighting for. She only broke up with because he was self-sabotaging and she knew he couldn’t be saved if he was doing it for her and not himself.
She told him as much. Asher left Ripley out in the cold and so he took a drive. He hoped the drive would clear his head. It instead led him to a mother and daughter that needed help. They left their car at the side of the road. Ripley saw it.
He got out. He heard the mother calling for help and it turns out both mother and child fell down a well.
The well didn’t have any guards around it. It was simply a hole in the ground. Sadie Smith was driving with her young daughter when Emelia needed to pee. They pulled over. Emelia went into the woods to use the bathroom.
She fell down the hole. Her mother hears her and unfortunately fell mere minutes after Emelia did. Both of them needed serious help. Ripley couldn’t do it alone. He called 911.
They sent several fire trucks. He also stayed at the scene because he figured a doctor might come in handy. He couldn’t tell only he suspected Sadie had a broken leg.
The captain of Firehouse 128 needed the mother/daughter duo to remain calm. They already built a rapport with Ripley and so the captain asked him to stand in as their point person. He was keeping them talking while Dr. Frost met someone from his past.
His old friend Ainsley Towne stopped by the hospital. She was working nearby and thought she should say hi. She played his mom in his tv show over twenty years ago.
They haven’t seen each other in seventeen years. Frost seemed happy to see her again and then he became sick when he was by himself.
It was a weird reaction. It probably has a story to it as well. Only Frost agreed with Maggie suggestion. Maggie was a huge fan of Ainsley’s. She’s watched all of her holiday movies. She also suggested that the actress follows her around to get experience about nursing.
Ainsley was doing a movie about a nurse that saves the love of her life when they get trapped in an elevator together.
Maggie thought her shadowing her would help with the movie. Frost didn’t seem to mind and Ainsley wanted to get her role right.
It was only when Frost was alone that he seemed sad. His friends didn’t notice that. Maggie didn’t notice it. Neither did anyone else at the hospital. Asher actually ran into her sister. Her sister was pregnant.
She was having trouble with fertility prior to that and so Asher stepping in helped her sister finally have the family she’s always wanted. Asher was so happy for her sister that she didn’t hear about the rescue on the news. The media came out in full force to report the mother and daughter trapped in the well.
The firefighters built a larger well next to the one where the ladies were trapped. They built a tunnel to connect to the other well and Ripley went down there.
He was needed for the plan. The plan was to get Emelia out first and she didn’t want to leave her mom. Emelia was young. She wasn’t stupid. She knew her mom was in bad shape.
She didn’t want to leave her in case it was goodbye forever and so her mom entrusting her to Ripley was the only way Emelia would leave. They got her out. She was rescued. And then they had to get out Sadie.
Sadie’s leg was broken. It was broken in a way that it actually saved her life. It prevented her from falling further into the well or on her daughter. The leg also couldn’t be saved.
Ripley went down into the well to amputate the leg. He did that. Everything looked fine. They sent a rope to her for her to hold on. She was coming out and she got stuck on something.
Ripley went further into the well to help her. He got her out. She was leaving when the newly built tunnel collapsed. It collapsed right on top of Ripley.
Chicago Fire Department lost contact with Ripley after the collapse. They thought he might have died. They even called his hospital so that his loved ones could be notified, but there was no need. Ripley survived the initial collapse.
He just needed to cough out the dirt and he was back to talking. Ripley was a bit claustrophobic after the collapse. He wanted to do something. He was considering digging himself out and Mouch told him not to move. Ripley created an air pocket for himself during the collapse and moving could risk that.
After the hospital was notified, Dr. Charles went to the scene. He was a therapist. The firefighter let him talk to Ripley. Charles did his best to get Ripley to moderate his breathing.
It would keep him alive long enough to be rescued. Frost wanted to be at the scene as well and he was ordered to stay at the hospital by Sharon.
Frost also revealed a little bit of history to Maggie. He said there was a lot of people that tried to take advantage of him when he was younger.
His parents didn’t care about protecting him as long as the gravy train kept pouring. And Ainsley kept him safe.
Or so he claimed. It just didn’t explain why Ainsley was trying to make out with him nowadays. She tried to kiss him and he pulled away.
Him pulling away seemed like a surprise to Ainsley. She said she missed him. It implied they had a different sort of relationship when he was a minor.
Ripley was also pulled out of the collapse. He saw his dead friend Sully down there. Sully reminded him to fight and he came back to life just as Asher said she loves him too.
