In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, a woman that’s been in a coma for the past twenty-two years was in need of a doctor tonight. Her name is Josephine Tucker. She fell into a coma as a teenager.
Her mother was her chief support. Only comas are tricky. She built up fluid in her head. They had to perform an emergency procedure for her right there in the ED.
The doctor also noticed that Josephine was moving her hands. The doctors asked her mother about it. Angela Tucker said her daughter has never done before and so it looks like the procedure that Josephine needed might have helped her out in more ways than one. And this miracle if it does turn into a miracle had happened in spite of Sharon Goodwin.
Back when Sharon was a nurse, she was on Josephine’s case. She was there for Angela. She did her best to support her. She also encouraged Angela to give her consent for the doctors to perform surgery on her daughter. Sharon had told her at the time that it was the best for Josephine.
Angela was paralyzed in fear and so she chose to follow Sharon’s advice. They went ahead with the surgery. Angela thought that her daughter would wake up and she never did. Not for twenty-two years. She was only waking up now because she developed a brain tumor while in a coma.
Josephine’s test results came back. She has a brain tumor that would kill her if they don’t remove it. It was also applying pressure in such a way that it was waking her up as well.
Her mother had to decide between saving her daughter’s life and having her remain in the coma. Or ignore the tumor so that she has her daughter back until the tumor kills her.
It was a tough choice. Sharon knew now that she couldn’t make it for Angela. She regretted her actions back then. She pushed Angela into doing something she wasn’t comfortable with. It resulted in a breakdown of trust.
Josephine’s doctor was Dr. Lenox. She went to Dr. Abrams for advice about the tumor. He suggested they remove it now and he went with her when they informed Angela about her options. Angela was right back where she started over twenty years ago.
Her husband was driving their daughter to school when they skidded on the road because of black ice. The car flipped over into a ditch. It killed her husband right away. Her daughter on the other hand was rushed to the hospital and Angela has been waiting for her to wake up ever since.
Sharon tried to talk to her. She wanted to offer Angela some counseling. Except Angela wasn’t having it. Sharon then talked to Lenox. They wondered what would’ve happened if Josephine had developed a tumor much earlier than she did. It was helping Josephine wake up. It was also killing her.
The two medical professionals questioned if they could make the tumor accelerate without actually doing enough damage to kill her. They were considering risky options when Lenox’s past visited the hospital.
Kip was back. His upstairs neighbor felt the faucet on. They flooded his apartment and he needed a place to crash. He naturally went to his sister. Lenox offered to put him up for a night.
She didn’t want him bothering her at work. She also hated that childhood nickname. Kip embarrassed her in front of the hot surgeon at work. She went back to Sharon. The two of them decided to try a procedure that would mimic the growth of Josephine’s tumor without doing so. They talked Angela into doing it.
It was going well at first. Then the patient took a turn for the worse. The doctors had to rush Josephine into surgery. They were doing so as Dr. Frost was helping a preteen boy. The boy’s name is Liam. Liam has been inducing vomiting. He was doing that as part of an at home conversion therapy.
His parents didn’t know about it only Liam was gay. He’s been making himself vomit whenever he’s attracted to a boy because he was trying to convince his body to be straight. It wasn’t going to work. Its why real conversion therapy doesn’t work. There is no “cure” for homosexuality. It’s not an ailment.
Neither Dr. Frost nor Dr. Charles could tell Liam’s parents why he was harming himself. They tried to talk to his parents about Liam needing help and his mother wouldn’t hear it. She knew her son was self-harming. She didn’t care because she’d rather he hurt himself than admit he was gay.
His father didn’t know about it and once he saw the damage it was doing to his son – he chose to accept Liam as he is. The parents were probably going to get a divorce now. They were definitely going to fight for custody. None of which mattered now that Liam was going to get help for self-harming.
Frost could help children. He just couldn’t help his own inner child. He was a child actor. He worked with a woman named Ainsley and she played his mother on a tv show. She kept other abusers away from him, but she also molested him herself. Frost knew it was technically wrong. He just didn’t see himself as a victim.
The relationship ended when he was seventeen. He wasn’t ready to call it what it was and at the same time he couldn’t help vomiting himself whenever he thought about the past. Ainsley recently contacted him to pick things up from before. And he couldn’t do through with it.
It made him sick whenever he thought about her. He never spoke abought what happened. He didn’t go to therapy. He also downplayed it when Maggie figured out. He told her that he wasn’t a victim. He left things there and he went back to being a doctor. He even checked on Ripley. Ripley was a patient at the hospital.
He was in good condition. He was also a local hero now that he saved a mother and daughter. He was getting tons of flowers. There were also balloons. He couldn’t wait to get out of the bed and finally have that conversation with Hannah Asher that they needed to have.
Ripley also heard back from Sharon about his job. The board convened. They reinstated Ripley. He gets to keep being a doctor at the hospital and now he needs to show Sharon that he’s changed. Though she was in a good mood. Josephine got her surgery and she also woke up from her coma. She was finally back among the living.
And Lenox decided to follow her brother’s advice by living it up at a party to congratulate Naomi for getting matched.
THE END!
