In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Officer Cook was still a part of Intelligence. She was a good cop. She does great work and she’s trying to repair some damage done to her career from before she joined Voight’s team.
She was actually heading into work on a Saturday to do paperwork when she witnessed a multiple car crash. Cooke had everyone stay in their cars. She checked on people involved in the accident. There was one man that was pretty messed up and he kept saying “they took my family”.
He was carrying around a lot of cash. Cooked clocked it and she realized that he was trying to pay a ransom for his family. And so she called Voight.
They couldn’t get any information from the man. He was rushed to the hospital with severe blood loss. It was therefore up to Cook and Intelligence to figure out what happened.
They identified the man as Gregory Miller. He has a wife and two kids. His wife wasn’t picking up her phone. Their kids weren’t at school. They tried to check Gregory’s GPS on his car and sadly that got destroyed in the car accident. They also couldn’t open his phone without a password. It led to the cops suspecting Gregory was targeted for his wealth.
Gregory was a lawyer with his own firm. He lived in a million dollar penthouse with his family. His wife and young daughters got up early that morning to go to gymnastic practice.
Only it wasn’t long after they left that someone sent Gregory his wife’s severed finger. It was enough to scare him. He tried to pay the ransom. He then got into a car accident and the cops became involved. Voight went to the man’s home with Cook. They found the severed finger. They could tell it belong to the wife thanks to the wedding ring.
They also got footage of the garage to the building. There was literal footage of a man in a ski mask go up the car and let himself into the passenger seat. Where was security?
Why was a stranger allowed into the building. The cops weren’t asking that question and neither was Gregory. Gregory died in surgery. It came out after he died that he was broke. He made bad investments. He also has a gambling problem. He had to ask his brother for money in order to pay the ransom. There’s no telling who he owed money to or if they were dangerous.
The kidnapper later sent a video to Gregory. He told him he was late with his money. He killed Gregory’s wife on camera and sent the footage to the dead man’s phone.
Now it was just down to the kids. Their names are Courtney and Maya. The kidnapper was demanding three hundred thousand or he was going to start killing the kids. The cops managed to track the location from the video. They found the abandoned warehouse. They also found Cara Miller’s body. She really was killed in the video.
There was no evidence at the scene indicating where the girls were. Or who took them. Voight was out of options and so he finally agreed to pay the ransom.
He just had to convince his bosses to give him the money. Deputy Chief Charlie Reid wants to be Voight’s friend. Voight told them that getting that money would prove their friendship.
Reid got him sixty grand. The rest of the money came from Cook. Cook made Gregory a promise. She promised him that she would find his family and she’s already failed that promise when she couldn’t protect Cara. She didn’t want to risk the girls as well.
Some were shocked that Cook had that kind of money. Cook’s mom was rich. Her dad owned his own shop and she worked at the store while being a cop. She hadn’t seen her mother in three years when she showed up asking for money. Her mother agreed to give it to her in return for Cook coming to a fundraiser thrown by the family.
Her mother looks down on her father. She also was disappointed with Cook. She didn’t want her daughter being a cop. And so the only compliment she had for her daughter was that it was good she was no longer in patrol.
It wasn’t surprising when Cook went back to ignoring her mother once she got the money. She didn’t even care about returning it to her mom. She told them that they could burn it after they rescued the kids.
Anyways, they waited for the phone call on Gregory’s phone. They followed the directions. They followed the car and they thought they found where the kids were and they proved to be wrong about that. The kidnappers led them into a trap. They now know the cops are involved. They could kill those girls to cut their loss.
The only thing the cops had was the guy who picked up the ransom. The guy had an affair with Cara. He wanted her to divorce her husband and they’d live off of the spousal support. He didn’t count on Cara staying with her husband. Or that the supposed rich husband was broke. The cops had to threaten the boyfriend with prison.
Prisoners tend not to like men who harm or kill children. Lucas had to tell the cops the truth or he risked dying within a month. He naturally chose the safest option. He told the cops where the girls were and they were later found unarmed.
The girls were going to live with their uncle now. Cook felt better about herself after she rescued those girls and she didn’t even mind giving the money back to her mom. It was the fundraiser that cracked her. Her grandfather was running for alderman. He wanted his family to appear to be whole. And Cook couldn’t play that game.
THE END!
