Ethan McPherson was Hana’s ex-boyfriend. She broke up with him last year. She thought that would be the last she heard of him and he surprised her last week when he reached out. Ethan was an addict. He was a drug addict. He was trying to work the program.
This included apologizing to Hana. Ethan wasn’t a very good partner to Hana when he was on drugs and she broke up with him when she found out he was using, but while they didn’t get back together, she was willing to help him. She thought he should join a program to get the treatment he deserved.
Ethan was currently going cold turkey. It might not be enough for him because he was dealing with a lot of trauma. He was an Air Marshall. He worked for a government. He was also former military. He’s a Marine.
They visited Veteran Affairs to find an affordable program that Ethan could join and they ended up involved in a hostage situation. Someone shot the place up when her friend wasn’t given help. The shooter was Dani Harrigan. She served overseas with her friend, Carver. Carver was injured on the job. He became a paraplegic.
Yet, Carver couldn’t get the VA to help him with anything. They wrote him off as fifty percent disabled. They weren’t paying him the full amount for his disability because he wasn’t labeled as fully disabled and so he and Dani tried to get things done the right way.
They filled out countless forms. They visited the VA’s office for weeks on end. Nothing they did move the needle. Dani finally had enough tonight because she brought a gun with her. She pulled it when they were about to get turned away again.
Dani shot the security guard. She thought he had a gun and he didn’t. Things began to spiral after that. Carver wanted to stop right then. Dani convinced him that he was owed more than the government was giving him.
She said they were going to force the VA to acknowledge he was fully disabled. It seemed like an impossible task when the FBI put the place on lockdown. The feds sent in a hostage negotiator. He tried to build a rapport with Dani. It wasn’t working and so Sheryll stepped in.
Hana was Sheryll’s friend. Sheryll was also in charge with Remy out of the country. Remy chose the worst time to go on vacation. Without him there, Sheryll found herself outranked. She didn’t want to forcibly breach the building. She got Dani talking. Dani released hostages when needed. She released the injured security guard. She also released another hostage for pizza to feed the rest. Sheryll thought breaching the building now was pointless when Dani was cooperating. And sadly Sheryll’s concerns were dismissed.
The building was breached. They found out much too late that Dani came well prepared. She didn’t just have a gun. She also had bombs. She attached IEDs to the door. Several members of SWAT were injured when they tried to breach. Hana tried to warn them. It just came too late. Dani was dangerous. The feds found her ex-husband. He believed that Dani had an untreated TBI. Dani never wanted to admit to being broken in case it kept her from the field and so she ignored her symptoms. She ignored the fact she needed urgent medical care.
Dani’s husband was now divorcing her. The ex has custody of the kids. Dani only has Carver. She also blamed herself for Carver getting injured and so she was willing to die to prove a point. Dani initially tried to force the VA to give her friend better treatment. Only that wasn’t working. The feds spoke to Veteran Affairs. They spoke to several committees. There was no one willing to give Carver what he needs. They claimed they don’t negotiate with terrorists. They failed to realize that these people were veterans. Not terrorists.
Ethan was also struggling with cold turkey. He got sick. He was vomiting. He was shaky. Carver understood the addiction and he offered Ethan some of his pills to get through the next few hours. Ethan turned him down. He said he made a promise. What went unsaid was that he made a promise to Hana. Hana held onto her cell phone when everyone else’s was destroyed. She was in contact with her people and there was a leak. The media found out that there was an FBI Agent inside of the building.
Dani began threatening to kill them all if the agent didn’t reveal themselves. She forced Hana’s hand. Hana came clean about being a fed and Dani tried to use that. Dani called Sheryll back. She threatened to kill Hana if Carver’s file wasn’t changed. By this point, Carver had had enough. He told Dani that she was doing this for herself and not for him. She thought it was his fault he got injured. She was doing all of this to make herself to feel better. It stopped being about him a long time ago. Carver was delivering facts when Sheryll took charge of the scene.
After the SWAT officers were injured, Sheryll spoke to the Special Agent in Charge. She got Isobel to give her command of the scene. She was going to work with Dani and that changed when Dani threatened to kill Hana. Sheryll knew there was no reasoning with her after that. She okayed the snipers. Dani missed the bullet. Carver was killed instantly. All of this was for nothing. Dani couldn’t accept that at first and so she held onto her four hostages. She moved them to the most secured room – the chapel.
Dani was looking for someone to blame. She planned on killing Hana to make herself feel better. Ethan had gotten Hana’s phone and so he used that to claim he was the real fed. He said Hana lied to protect him. The only thing Ethan asked for was to not be killed in front of Hana. He lured Dani out of the chapel. He told Hana’s friends what he was doing before he did it. He kept Dani talking. It made Dani realize she couldn’t kill him. She couldn’t kill another soldier.
Dani then planned on dying suicide by cop, but Hana stopped her. Hana and Ethan made sure no one else got harmed. And that Dani got to live to see her family again.
