FBI Special Agent Sheryll Barnes found going out to be intimidating. She wasn’t ready to date. Or meet new people. She was in a weird headspace right now and this new generation was not helping. She was old school gay. They were new school gay. There was a difference and it was vast. Barnes had to leave a party at nine because she just wanted to be alone. She told a woman that was interested that she had to go to work in the morning and that proved to be true when they caught a case. They were looking for Jake “Carm” Carman. He was accused of killing his wife and he was on the run.
The feds got involved because this was high profile. Carm and Monica have their own tv show. They do free home renovations for low-income families. They were about to start their second show when this happened. Ray took it the hardest. He was a huge fan of the show. He said it was like a warm hug after a hard day. He wasn’t the only one upset. There was media, producers, production teams, and a crew construction that all called the office to see if what they were hearing true. They all wanted to know if Carm killed his wife. The perfect person to answer that question will be Carm.
Carm later contacted an old family friend. He was with her the night his wife was murdered. His friend was Romy Gilyard. She tried to convince him to turn himself in. He refused to do so. He said he didn’t kill his wife and that the cops would keep looking into if they didn’t find him, but it doesn’t look good for him. Carm was out that night. He got plastered drunk. His friend had to put him in a cab. It turns out Carm was worried his wife was cheating on him. They’ve been going apart for a while. And Monica never liked Romy.
Romy and Carm see each other as siblings. According to Romy, Carm had to hide at her place as a kid because his father was a violent drunk. It’s why Carm normally doesn’t drink to excess. Then he heard about his wife and he broke that rule he set for himself. The feds found Romy less than an hour after Carm left her place. She didn’t help him. She just left a few things out for him to take. He also left behind his bloody clothes at her place. The feds found them before she could wash them. They questioned Romy. She told them everything she knew.
Romy told them that Carm was upset that night. He was so drunk that she poured him into the cab. She explained why he got like that and it didn’t help Carm’s case. The feds told Romy to call if he comes back again. Though it was odd that Romy left out the part that Carm swore he was innocent. The feds tracked down the cab and they found the cab driver had also been murdered on the same night as Monica. It was assumed that Carm killed both people. It just didn’t make sense because how could someone barely standing manage to arrange two murders in a short timespan?
Sure, his marriage might be ending only they were drifting apart for months. Their friends all saw them drift apart. They also knew they couldn’t get divorced or it would ruin their brand. Their construction company was Rosy Hearth. They did more than a tv show. Their newest show was supposed to be about fixing up old churches and it wouldn’t work if the fans found out the wife was having an affair. People tended to be hasher to the women that do that over the men. Carm could have survived their brand tanking. Monica wouldn’t have if she had survived.
Carm stopped by his office. He ran into Monica’s assistant. She only came in because the feds wanted to talk to her again and so she warned them that Carm was in the building. Remy pursued him. They fought. Carm got the upper hand. He could have killed Remy and he didn’t. He instead pled his case. Carm said he didn’t kill his wife. The oddest part was that Remy believed him. Remy knew Carm would have killed him if he had actually done it and so the feds investigated Monica’s murder.
There was footage of a man watching Carm outside of the bar. The same man was photographed in Carm’s neighborhood. It was too much of a coincidence. This along with the fact that the feds found Carm was roofied the night this all kicked off showed he was being set up. It’s why he looked drunk. He wasn’t. He was knocked out. He was framed for two murders and the one person that would do would be Monica’s lover. Carm was sent a photo of Monica undressed in a bathroom. He recognized that bathroom.
He renovated it for a schoolteacher. Her name is Ms. Ida. He stopped by the place to double-check. He was right. Monica was meeting her lover at the schoolteacher’s place. It wasn’t with Ms. Ida. She was frail old woman. She wouldn’t be behind this. Only she goes to church regularly. It left her pastor free to use her place. Pastor Westin was married and the head of a multi-million dollar church. It wouldn’t look good for him if it got out that he impregnated his married Monica. Monica was pregnant when she died. It might actually be the reason she was killed.
An affair can be a hidden. A pregnancy couldn’t. Monica’s lover was black and both she and her husband were white. She couldn’t pass that child off as Carm’s. She also didn’t seem to want to get rid of it. She only became a risk if she didn’t want to get rid of it. She was killed and the worst part was that Westin didn’t do it himself. He used his brother-in-law to do it. Westin’s father-in-law started their mega church. His brother-in-law was passed over for pastor because he got a DUI and has an addiction. Olin killed Westin’s pregnant mistress to protect the church.
Westin also promised to make him head pastor at the new location they were opening up. When the cops found out Westin was using Ida’s home for his affair, they questioned him. He became scared. He called Olin in a panic. Olin convinced him to meet up at a secluded area. Olin then killed Westin. He wanted to frame Carm for Westin’s death as well. The sorry part was that Carm thought Olin was a friend. Olin offered to help prove his innocence and he showed up only to get shot. Carm took a bullet to his shoulder before he fled his would be killer.
Olin hunted him. He found him. Carm tried to fight back, but he would have died if the feds hadnt showed. They saved Carm’s life and they arrested Olin for the three murders. He’ll never become pastor now. The church also might not survive the scandal. Carm’s name was cleared. Remy also offered him additional help if he needed it. Only this case reminded Barnes that she was unhappy. She finally faced that tonight. She even knew what it caused. She misses her kids. She was considering about transferring to DC to be closer to them and the only thing holding her back was that she wasn’t sure if she could leave her team.
She loves her team. They were in a good place and this could unravel it. And so Barnes asked Isobel to keep her secret for now.
