Meredith and Nick headed back to Seattle to do a favor for Catherine. Catherine was still in charge. Her health scare didn’t stop her from running several hospitals and she called for two of her finest surgeons tonight when one of her friends needed a liver transplant. Catherine was friend with Evan and Tasha Lawson. Tasha was an intelligent college professor. Not than anyone can tell because Tasha’s liver was failing her. It left her with memory issues. She often forgets where she is or that she even needs surgery.
Tasha was turned away from two other hospitals. None of them wanted to help her. They just pushed her away and to matters worse they also dismissed her wife. Her wife is a doctor. Evan was a great surgeon. She was trained by Catherine herself. Evan tried to tell the others what her wife needed. She was ignored because the doctors saw two black women. There was lot of racism in the medical field and it often left black women vulnerable to abuse. Tasha should have been put on the donor’s list immediately.
She was jaundiced at the start of tonight because no one would listen. Catherine convinced Tasha and Evan to come to Grey Sloane Memorial because she knew they would get treated there. They would also receive the best treatment from the best doctors, but behind the scenes there were issues between Richard and Meredith. Meredith didn’t tell Richard that his wife had cancer. She was technically bound by doctor/patient confidentiality and that didn’t matter to Richard. He’d rather be angry at Meredith than at Catherine.
Catherine was the one that lied to him for months. She’s the one that didn’t mention she was in surgery until she nearly died and Richard had to make decisions about her care. Richard has since forgiven his wife. He hasn’t forgiven Meredith. He didn’t even want to work with her on Tasha’s case. Catherine forced him to work with Meredith and so Richard made things as difficult as possible. He second guessed everything Meredith said. He also argued with her about who should be making decisions for Tasha’s care.
Nick noticed that Tasha was struggling more than she should. He suspected she suffered a stroke. She needed several tests and Meredith thought the doctors should make that decision while Richard thought Evan should make that decision. He said Evan was the caretaker. He reminded Meredith that Tasha doesn’t remember who she is or the doctors’ names. Meredith then reminded Richard that they didn’t need Evan’s consent to make the best medical decisions for Tasha. They all knew that Tasha would be against further testing if it risked Tasha not getting that new liver.
Richard and Meredith were constantly fighting about everything. They also couldn’t take out their frustrations on the interns. The interns were attending a mental wellness retreat. Bailey was running it out of her house and she brought in an expert psychologist to help the interns. It was a great idea. It failed because the expert wasn’t prepared for the stories coming from the surgical interns. Lucas was able to bond with a gunshot victim after he was grazed by a bullet during an armed robbery. Simone and Blue talked another medical intern off a literal roof.
Jules lost her girlfriend when Mika dropped out of the program. Mika nearly died in front of her. She saved Mika’s life and it still wasn’t enough to save their relationship. Jules said they were only doing this retreat to ensure none of the others flame out as well. She got angry because she was angry. She wanted to know why Bailey didn’t fight for Mika. She wanted to know why the others didn’t fight to keep Mika. Their group was splintered and she felt alone in her pain. Lucas had Simone. Blue has Molly. Jules didn’t have anyone.
The psychologist also checked out. He’s helped CEOs. He helps people find a work/life balance. He couldn’t help the interns with their trauma and being a surgical intern was all trauma. They saw things everyday that would break anyone. What they needed to be reminded of was that they have each other. Jules did something dirty to Simone and Simone forgave her. Simone was there after Jules yelled during the retreat. She helped Jules see that she didn’t have to deal with the pain by herself. That her friends will be there for her.
Richard and Meredith also came to the same conclusion. They realized that Tasha’s memory problems weren’t all because of her failing liver. She has dementia. She was diagnosed two years ago. Its why the other hospital wouldn’t put her on the donor list. Evan fudged her files to try and get her wife a new liver. She also lied to Catherine. Catherine went to bat for Tasha with the donor committee. She could now be in trouble because of it. The same goes for Nick if he had gone through with the surgery.
Meredith found the dementia in the additional tests she ordered for Tasha. Richard found out about it when he asked for Tasha’s full medical records to get faxed to his hospital. They came together to stop that surgery. They thought Catherine knew about it so they confronted her first. When she got angry about the lies, that’s when they knew that it was all Evan. Evan wasn’t ready to lose her wife to liver disease. She would have bought Tasha some months. Possibly a year or two. It would all been for nothing because Alzhemier’s will kill her eventually.
The surgery was stopped. The liver and all it took to transport the liver was for nothing to Tasha and her wife. Winston and Ben got the liver. They were transporting it by car. They came across a father that crashed his motorcycle off the side of the road. They had to perform surgery on him at the scene just to ensure he survived making it to the hospital. They did all of that and so some good did come from Evan’s lies. It also helped Winston see that it was okay to start dating again. He later tried asking Jackie’s mom out again and she turned him down. She did it very nicely. It really wasn’t him or anything he did.
Link and Amelia also worked together to help a woman that injured herself at her divorce party. Marley would have lost her ability to walk again if it hadn’t been for them. She also said goodbye to the wedding dress they cut up to treat her. It made Link see that it was time to move on from old hurts. He later proposed to Jo and she said yes. He didn’t have a ring at the time because he didn’t want to get stuck with it like that time he proposed to Amelia. And she turned him down, but Link will go ring shopping with Jo now.
