In tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy episode, Jo and Link were getting married. Link was also going to work on the day of their wedding. Their friends and family surprisingly came through for them in spite of the four day notice. Even Teddy made sure to come back in time with Owen. The two of them were having issues with their own marriage.

They opened up their marriage and Teddy realized she couldn’t sleep with anyone else. She also learned that Owen didn’t have that problem. He slept with his sister’s childhood friend. Her name is Nora. She was actually a patient at the hospital. And that meant the couple were going to keep running into Nora.

Nora had to be readmitted recently. Her health was deteriorating. The doctors didn’t know what was wrong with her. They just knew she wasn’t getting well and so they tried to put on a brave face for her.

Owen was there to be her friend. Nothing more. Teddy was there to be her doctor. She was working with Winston and trying to find an answer. They were doing this as the interns came in. Lucas technically never left because the patient he was watching the night before took a turn. He was assisting with a young patient named Dylan.

Dylan once had a growth on her brain. Amelia removed it thanks to a risky surgery. It was in a difficult spot and Amelia thought she did everything right, but Dylan eventually developed locked-in syndrome.

Her eyes were open. She just couldn’t move or talk. It was like she was trapped in her own body. Amelia wanted to be cautious with Dylan’s parents. She felt Lucas undermined that when he did his best to reassure them. Lucas hated being the bearer of bad news. It’s his flaw. He went into medicine because he wanted to heal people.

Lucas also believes that there was treatment for everything. He couldn’t give up. He didn’t want to do so with Dylan and might have to do it with Simone. Simone sided with Amelia. They both knew loss. Simone’s mother died in childbirth with Simone. She heard a lot of people use words like “departed” or even just “loss”.

The truth was her mom was dead. Simone wanted everyone to acknowledge that her mother was dead. She thought they should be honest with Dylan’s parents. They should let her parents know that she’s dying and that they might not be able to rescue her.

Only Lucas got upset with her. Lucas couldn’t give up on a patient. It felt wrong to him. He’s been at the hospital the entire time. He’s seen that the parents haven’t eaten or slept in four days waiting for a sign of improvement. Dylan was their only child. They were holding on out of hope.

It wasn’t anything else or what the doctors said and so Lucas couldn’t be the ones to take that from him. He was smart. He was smarter than people gave him credit for. He was refusing to sleep himself because he kept looking for an answer.

Lucas cared too much. It was the same for Amelia. She got mad at Lucas because she wasn’t sure she could deliver on his promise. She’s been doubting herself a lot lately. It used to be up to Derek to prop her up. After he died, it was Meredith then Maggie’s job to help her. Amelia self-destructs without help.

She almost pulled out of Dylan’s surgery earlier because she wasn’t sure of her abilities and she let Monica talk her into it. Amelia’s greatest fear was that she does something wrong in the OR. She was worried she did that with Dylan.

Dylan used to be able to blink. She later stopped doing even that. They had to tape Dylan’s eyes closed so that she wouldn’t develop an infection in them. There was nothing Amelia could do. Lucas also couldn’t say anything after all of that. The parents were angry. They were rightfully angry. The doctors knew they needed to lash out and so they let them. Lucas talked to his aunt afterwards about options.

Lucas wanted to know what else they could do for Dylan. Surgery? Medication? Amelia admired his tenacity only she had to let him learn a painful lesson tonight.

There were no guarantees in medicine. Teddy and Winston came up a plan to help Nora fight the infection in her body. They took her into surgery. They tried to save her and it wasn’t working. They had to just stitch her back up. Nora will be moved to palliative care in a few days. She was going to die. She was told that they did all they could and now Nora has to break the news to her family.

Nora has four kids. She split with her ex. She was the kids’ primary caregiver and so she had to consider what was best for them. Jo and Link’s wedding was the one good thing at the end of the day for the doctors.

Yet, they had a few hiccups along the way. Link waited until the last minute to write his wedding vows and he couldn’t come up with the words. Jo also made her mother-in-law cry. Poor Maureen. Maureen wanted Jo to wear the same veil as she did and her mother did before her. Jo hated that veil.

It was very dated. The same for the makeup. Maureen did her makeup for the wedding. It was horrible. Jo felt she looked like the 80s version of Boy George. She finally told the other woman that she won’t wear the veil or keep her makeup. Maureen left in tears. She still showed up for the wedding and by then Jo realized that she wasn’t being hated.

Or sabotaged. She was just being mothered. Sometimes mothers can be passive aggressive. It’s their love language and Jo didn’t know it because she never had a mother before. She was learning that Maureen wanted the best for her. It was merely coming out as judgy.

The wedding itself was beautiful. Link performed his vows in lyrics. He even brought along a guitar. Lucas and Simone broke up right before the wedding. They got into a huge fight.

Lucas felt Simone couldn’t take a chance on anything. She told Lucas that it was because she doesn’t have a safety net like he does. He never has to worry about the consequences. She does. Simone said that in the heat of the moment and it made Lucas realize that’s how she saw him. He was merely a legacy. He in turn saw her as too rigid.

Lucas finally called it on their relationship. They were over. They cancelled their plans. Lucas went to the wedding. Simone went to a bar where she met someone and slept with that stranger in the bathroom.

Teddy actually went back to the hospital hoping after the wedding. She was hoping to find an answer in healing Nora, but then she saw that Owen was holding Nora so tenderly and she knew in that moment that it hadnt been a one off. Owen does care for Nora.

And Jules wasn’t upset that she wasn’t on Winston’s service anymore. She was getting to know other types of surgery and she knew now that she shouldn’t limit herself so early into her residency.

THE END!
