A body was found in the park. The victim was a John Doe. He didn’t have a wallet or ID or even a cell phone on him when he was found. He was however seen arguing with a woman before his death. He threatened her. He was overheard saying he’d ruin her if she tried to ruin him. The murder itself wasn’t witnessed. Only the woman was seen fleeing the area. She was in her thirties. Petite. She was pretty and so the cops tried to identify the victim in order to find out about his enemies. The one thing John Doe had on him was the District Attorney’s business card.
Lieutenant Brady later visited Baxter’s home. She showed him pictures of the victim to see if he recognized him and he did. He identified John Doe as James Powers. He was the son of a congressman. He was entering politics himself. He also has a string of failed relationships. His exes all matched the description of the woman that killed him. His latest ex was Rose Gregory. She was a dancer and she put him in the hospital when she threw a glass at his head. James told his parents that Gregory didn’t like it when he tried to end things with her.
Gregory also ran when the cops found her. She got into her car. She hit a pedestrian and was found with a gun registered for her in New Jersey. Not New York. It thereby made it illegal for her to carry in the city. She was already facing a slew of charges when she opened up about James. James’s parents thought he was a great guy. He wasn’t. He was old, rude, and entitled. Gregory ended things with him. She realized she could do better and couldn’t wait to move on. She wasn’t their killer. James was spotted with a different woman that night.
Before the park, James was at a gentleman’s club called the Fisk Club. He brought a woman to the club. They were seen arguing and the woman was later identified as Ashley Davenport. She runs a crisis management firm. She was a fixer. James needed her help because he was planning on running for Governor and someone was about to release a nasty article about him. He was all for conservation. Which made it look bad when he recently killed an endangered wolf. He posted videos of it on social media and was quickly condemned.
This new article about him pointed out his worse flaws. He liked dating women twenty years younger than him. With a large power gap between them. He was a groomer and he got offended when someone called him that. He called Ashely because he wanted her to kill the article. She tried to tell him that it didn’t matter. Most men weren’t held to a high standard in the first place. The world would all forget about it when he got engaged or married. It was just James that demanded that the article get killed.
Ashley told the cops that she got the feeling he was romantically interested in the journalist. She thought his ego took a hit when his interest wrote an article about him. It made him realize he never had a chance with her. James even told Ashley that he would bury the journalist if the article gets printed. He contacted the journalist that night to argue with her when Ashley refused to help him kill the article. The journalist’s name was Julia Gallo. She was once involved in a sex scandal with a celebrity some years ago. And that’s how people still view her.
They saw her as someone with a sex tape. Not as someone with experience about power imbalance in a relationship. The cops got a warrant for Julia’s apartment. They found the clothes she was wearing that night and there was still blood on him. She was also identified by the witness. She was their killer and so the only question left was why she killed him? The District Attorney’s office were claiming she killed James to save her own career. Julia’s lawyer who happens to be Kate Norris was claiming Julia killed James in self-defense.
District Attorney Baxter had to recuse himself from the case. He was dating Kate. It was an open secret and his office couldn’t be seen doing anything improper. He recused himself. He left ADA Price to carry on the case with ADA Maroun. They were told upfront that Julia wanted a plea deal. She was willing to do Man 2. It gave her the chance of getting out early with good behavior. It was Price that turned down that deal. He thought they had a pretty good case until Julia claimed she killed James because he tried to sexually assault her that night.
It also doesn’t help that the victim’s family were pressuring the Assistant District Attorneys. Congressman Powers didn’t want Price to mention that his son tried to ruin Julia’s career. He thought it was bad optics. He demanded that the whore that killed his son shouldn’t be allowed to destroy the family name. He failed to grasp that they couldn’t ignore Julia’s motive for killing James. Not when she was claiming it escalated to sexual assault. Julia’s lawyer showed that James planned on creating a bunch of lies to detract from the article.
Ashley was put on the stand. She admitted that James planned to tell everyone that he was sleeping with Julia. He wanted to ruin Julia’s career. He was going to push a social media movement calling her a whore. He wanted to destroy her for writing the truth about him. He was a horrible person. It just doesn’t excuse murder. It didn’t matter that the victim was unlikeable. Price tried to remind people of that and it didn’t seem to help. The case for the prosecution also took another hit when their eyewitness refused to testify.
Kate told Doug Keller that his OnlyFans page would be brought up. Along with his daughter’s struggle with opioids. She told him that millions were following this trial and that he could lose everything if he goes to court. She scared Doug so bad that he pulled out. He refused to testify to what Julia said that night. Price could force him to take the stand, but his credibility took a hit when he went back on what he said. Price tried to get around that by putting Detective Shaw on the stand. Shaw told the court what Doug said that night and Kate tried to claim it was hearsay. The judge ruled in the prosecution’s favor.
Shaw also mentioned that they gave Julia the opportunity to tell her side of the story. She never discussed a sexual assault. She instead tried to claim she was innocent and that her story only changed when she got to court. Julia also has a history in which she committed perjury. And that was mentioned she took the stand.
Julia was ultimately found guilty of murder and it left a strain on Kate’s relationship with Baxter.
