The WNBA was finally get the recognition it deserves. Yet, the media still tries to write about the drama on the court like it’s a catfight. Cameron Adler and Nia Moore were competitors. They might trash talk each other only they also push each other to be better. Cameron didn’t take Nia’s comments about “ending her” seriously. She dismissed them. It wasn’t until she was leaving a game and someone shot her that the cops thought maybe they were people that didn’t know basketball was just a game. Cameron sadly died at the scene. Her killer escaped into the crowd. It was then up to the cops to get justice for her.
This case was tough on Detective Riley. His teenage daughter was a huge fan of Cameron’s. The one time that she ever puts her phone down was when she was watching Cameron play. They would watch the games together. Riley even knew about the rivalry between Cameron and Nia. Nia was also a registered gun owner. He and Detective Shaw later questioned Nia. She said the drama on the court was just to get media attention. They didn’t hate each other in real life. Nia was also willing to let the cops test her gun and so she really didn’t do it.
Nia did know that Cameron was fighting with her girlfriend. Cameron was dating Rachelle. Rachelle like Nia was black and Cameron was white. Rachelle thought their on the court feud was too much. She said people inherently believe the black person as the aggressor. She didn’t want Cameron playing into that stereotype. She said the WNBA was inclusive and family friendly. She wanted that to be the side the media showed. Rachelle and Cameron were fighting, but it wasn’t from a place of hatred.
Cameron’s parents flew up to the city. They spoke with the cops. The mother thought Cameron’s ex-boyfriend might have done this. His name is Greg Dawson. He was a sports reporter. He came up to cover Cameron’s last game. He was the last guy that Cameron dated before she came out as gay. The fact her new girlfriend was also black didn’t help things either. They were from Texas. Greg was relentlessly mocked online and in real life for “turning” Cameron gay. They dated all throughout college. They broke up and that’s when she started dating a woman.
Greg was angry with her. He tried to talk to her that night. She blew him off. She got into a car with someone else and that’s where it ended. The someone else was her business manager. Cameron started a weed company. WNBA was relaxing the rules about that. It was also legal in New York. Cameron originally started the company with her physical therapist. He got them the license because the state offered a few of them to people with previous weed offenses. Only Cameron didn’t find out about Darius Cain’s other arrests until after he got the license.
Darius went to prison for assault. He also has an attempted murder charge. Cameron couldn’t let him tarnish her good girl image. She kicked him out of the business they started together and he didn’t take it well. He lost out on thousands if not millions. Darius was a great suspect. The detectives tracked him down and he ran when they announced themselves. Riley was closer. He saw Darius threw something in the water. He believed it to be a gun. Shaw wasn’t so sure. Shaw didn’t see Darius throw anything.
Shaw couldn’t back up his partner because lying wasn’t his thing. He wouldn’t do it even for a friend. They also sent in divers only they waited too long. The divers checked the after forty-eight hours and they didn’t find anything. There’s no telling where the gun was or if it had been thrown into the water. There was just Riley’s testimony. Which didn’t help when the prosecution took this one to court. Darius’s lawyer was claiming racism. Darius was black and Cameron was rich, white, and famous. The lawyer claimed that Darius was only a suspect because he was black.
The lawyer also accused the business manager of lying about Darius. Darius’s assault and attempted murder charges happened while he was in prison for weed offenses. The lawyer accused the business manager of the murder and the reason being Cameron was going to fire him for exaggerating Darius’s rap sheet. There’s no proof of that. The guy has an alibi. The lawyer was just saying stuff and the judge allowed it. There was facial recognition that puts Darius at the scene. Cameron’s blood was found on his clothes. And he did throw something into the water.
The lawyer claimed facial recognition was created by racist white people. The blood could have gotten on Darius’s clothes at any time. Detective Riley was also a white cop and would naturally be biased against someone like Darius. Then to top it off, the lawyer put Darius on the stand. Darius was claiming he threw the hard drive that he took from the business manager’s office into the river. It wasn’t a gun. Shaw then admitted he saw something that looked like a hard drive get thrown into the river that day and not a gun.
Shaw wasn’t sure what it was because again Riley had been closer. Only a hard drive would match what he saw. It just wouldn’t match what Riley saw. This along with the other evidence was circumstantial. Shaw was worried that Darius might actually be innocent. ADA Maroun was worried about the same thing. Shaw made the mistake of telling Riley he didn’t want Darius to be guilty on the day they arrested him and so Price used that to dismiss Shaw’s testimony. Inherent bias came up again. It worked against Shaw and Darius.
Darius was found guilty, but he claimed innocence even as they dragged him away.
