In tonight’s Law & Order SVU, there were two teenagers that got assaulted at knifepoint. The boy was bruised. The girl was raped. The kids went to the park early that morning for a school project in their Geology class.
Unless they were followed in, the odds are that their attacker was from the same neighborhood. Detective Velasco’s neighborhood. It happened in Washinton Heights. The people there have various complaints about the police. Velasco hasn’t heard anything about a sexual predator or one moving into the neighborhood.
Yet, the man they were looking for seemed like a pro. He came with a lamp cord. It’s not something usually found lying around and the crime itself happed in the early morning and no one saw a thing.
The rapist knew how to stay hidden. He attacked those kids a block away from the school. He wasn’t spotted on any cameras. There was also a homeless man that accidentally picked up the cord. It ruined any evidence they could have gotten from it. The only thing that the police had were the victims and their testimonies. Anna Beltran and Moses Sanchez.
Anna did a rape kit. Her father didn’t take what happened to her all that well. He was angry at himself for failing to protect her and it left him short-tempered with everyone. Especially with the police. Anna luckily had her mother during the exam. Anna’s friend Moses also gave the cops a description. He was very great at details.
He said the man they were looking for was possibly Chino-Latino. He worked with a sketch artist and he came up with a very realistic of a guy. The police released the sketch to the media.
The cops withheld who gave them the sketch. Moses’s family didn’t want him to get hurt again. Or get labeled as a snitch. The cops understood. They claimed they got the sketch from someone else.
They also found a man matching the description. Some of the community activists found the man first. They beat him up. There was one zealous guy that put the suspect in the hospital and so he got arrested. Velasco knew the good Samaritan. He was the detective’s upstairs neighbor. He was a cop wannabe that plays his music far too loud.
The guy’s name was Danny. He got arrested. The man matching the sketch also got arrested. Danny was claiming he was helping his community. He was raised by his grandfather.
His grandfather was a former cop. Danny wanted to be a cop too. He applied three times. He never heard back from them. He now lashes out by playing his music loud because he wanted to upset the detective that lived in his building, Velasco was just fine when he arrested Danny. Danny was also apparently wrong about the suspect they found, Eddie Soto.
The kids were brought in for a line-up. They both said that Soto looked like the guy. Only he wasn’t the guy. Moses said the rapist looked more Asian. Anna agreed with him.
Soto’s DNA also wasn’t a match for what they found in the rape kit. Soto was released and the neighborhood wasn’t taking it well. They held protests demanding justice now. They were the same people that refused to help the cops. They tore down the photos of the suspect. They were ready to set the neighborhood on fire and weren’t willing to do anything to save it.
Captain Benson left it to Velasco to carry out community reach. He lived in the area. She entrusted him to put the community at ease and he didn’t know how to do that. He’s lived there for four years.
The one person he regularly talks to was the woman who sold the tamales. Velasco didn’t know how to get the word out, but he did know who would be better at the job. Velasco put in a good word and he had Danny’s assault plead down to a misdemeanor. Danny was released. He agreed to assist Velasco since the cop helped him.
Together, they got the word out. They made everyone know it wasn’t Soto. The people calmed down and now they were even more scared to point the finger at anyone. They didn’t want a repeat of the Soto incident.
he cops couldn’t get them to listen only Danny convinced people to stay on the lookout. There was one brave person who called the cops over an attempted rape. The victim was again a teenage girl. The perp brought lamp cord. The girl fought her attacker and he fled on foot. Benson called in a lockdown. She had the whole police force out looking for the guy.
There was even a helicopter. The latest victim said she ripped her attacker’s shirt. She spotted a zodiac tattoo and that helped the cops when they caught up with their rapist. The man was indeed a little more Asian than Latino.
The whole neighborhood came together to hunt him. They were beating him up when the cops came. And when Danny came to break up the fight.
The cops finally got their perp and he was now off the streets.
Velasco also connected with the people in the neighborhood. It made him curious about Danny. Velasco decided to connect Danny with the Auxiliary police force. He called in a favor with Finn. Danny will now be working in Washington Heights.
THE END!
