There was a fire. It happened at an antiques store. Petty Officer First Class Jennifer Garcia was helping out the owner by posting items online and she was still there when a fire broke out. The building wasn’t up to code. The fire destroyed the storage room. It just didn’t explain why Jenn didn’t try to get out. Jenn was at the place with her boyfriend. He fell asleep in the office. He woke up to smoke. He couldn’t see or hear anything. He ran out to go seek help. He tried to go back into the building when he didn’t see Jenn. And the firefighters stopped him.

NCIS felt for the boyfriend. The poor man was still blaming himself when it was revealed he couldn’t have saved her. Jenn died before the fire. In fact, the fire was most likely set to hide the crime. She was murdered. She was strangled before she burnt up. Her time of death couldn’t be ascertained because of the damage from the fire only Kasie checked the website for the store. She knew that the last post the victim made was at midnight. She also got access to Jenn’s phone. Jenn and her boyfriend were arguing.

Their text messages showed that Jenn was on the brink of dumping him. He didn’t mention that when he first talked to NCIS. Daniel Holloway later claimed that they made up that night. He said he went to the store that night to plead his case and that Jenn ultimately forgave him. He also said he gifted her a necklace. There were just one issue with that story. Daniel’s lighter was used to set the fire. He had a monogrammed lighter. He claimed he gifted it to Jenn when he gave up cigarettes for her. Only that same lighter was found in a bucket of acetone. It’s what started the fire.

NCIS assumed that Daniel was lying about everything. They thought Jenn did dump him. They figured he must have killed her after getting rejected and so finding out the necklace was real was odd. Jenn was wearing the necklace that Daniel bought for her when she died. The necklace melted into her skin. Why would she wear a necklace if they broke up that night? Wouldn’t she throw it away or refused to wear it if she didn’t want Daniel to believe he could buy her affections? She either was wearing it because she did forgive him or he put it on her after he killed her.

It was eating Knight up for not knowing. She went out on a ladies’ night with her sister and Kasie. They were at a pottery class. Robin asked them not to discuss work. Knight tried. She really did. She just couldn’t turn her investigator’s mind off. She kept discussing her theories with Kasie and the two finally had enough. They remotely accessed Kasie’s computer on their night out. They thought the guys had already went home by then and they were wrong. McGee’s family was out of town. He stayed behind at the office to play computer games on Kasie’s giant tv with Torres and Director Vance.

The guys heard Kasie’s computer pinged when she accessed it. They knew that the women were still investigating. They tracked them down and ran into them after they got kicked out of the pottery class. The last part happened because they had a field experiment with the class’s kiln. They wanted to see how long Jenn was in the fire to melt her necklace. What they ended up doing was setting the kiln too hot. It filled the class up with smoke and the women had to pay for damages. They also got thrown out.

Robin was so upset they had to leave. She put in a lot of effort planning their night out. She wanted them to have fun because she was feeling neglected by Torres. Torres often had to cancel or leave early because of work. It left Robin feeling like she wasn’t a priority. It also brought up some feelings left over from her father. He was NCIS too. Robin just wanted some normalcy back and once she saw she wasn’t going to get it – she finally gave in to the madness. She pointed out something about the case.

Robin noticed in the crime scene photos that something had been moved. The rest of the office was about alignment and chakras until they get to the one piece. It had been moved. The women went to the antiques store. They ran into the guys who were also investigating. Daniel did lie that night. He wasn’t there when the fire started. He was meeting up with someone whose been like a brother to him. Daniel has a record and his friend was probation. They shouldn’t technically be meeting because it might send his friend back to prison.

Now that Daniel was no longer lying, they learned that he came back to see the place on fire. He also noticed that the front door was unlocked. Jenn wouldn’t have left it unlocked. Her killer might have. The thing that had been moved in that office was a chest. The chest was hiding the safe in the office. This wasn’t some crime of passion. It was a heist. Jenn got killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her killer made off with whatever was in the safe. The question was what could have been in that safe?

Torres and Robin checked the website for the place. Nothing too expensive. It seemed mostly junk and it doesn’t explain why they would have such an expensive safe. It was the top of the line. Daniel didn’t kill Jenn. The killer was in fact a firefighter. Someone that was flirting with Knight at the scene. The firefighter’s hands were a match to the wounds on Jenn’s throat. He got word of a safe being there. He ran into Jenn, killed her, robbed the place, and then set a fire. One he knew he’d get called to.

If he hadn’t sent Knight some photos as Mr. December, they’d never have solved the case. They arrested their guy and their night out wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be.

But Robin could see how the cases become all important until they’re done.

THE END
