In tonight’s The Rookie episode, Officer Celina Juarez came across her first masked vigilante. They were chasing a perp. He would have evaded them if there hadn’t been a vigilante nearby and it was the vigilante that tied up their perp for them. Celina was so confused on how to report it. Her CO had to tell her how to call it in.
It was later revealed that the vigilante has been at work for a while now. He posts his vigilantism online. He’s got a following. Angela and Nyla both have children that were great fans of the guy. And now they were both back in uniform because of him as well.
The ladies were detectives. They were asked to return to uniform because of community outreach. The LAPD was dealing with a PR problem ever since Monica destroyed their credibility.
Nyla’s husband runs a community center. He hears calls for accountability all the time. He thinks the cops could be doing more outreach. Lieutenant Grey agreed with him. He was willing to be interviewed. He also had more patrol out on the street and their increased presence was to help turn people against the vigilante.
The vigilante goes by the nickname ”The Watcher”. The cops would run across people that told them that they were useless and that they preferred the Watcher. They even posted photos of the masked man in their store windows.
Then, as if a vigilante wasn’t enough, the rookies were being tested to the extreme. Celina was supposed to take lead that day. John was supposed to remain in the background. He’s trained Celine for nine months and it was time to see if she could survive the streets without him.
Only John was still worried about her. They were called to the scene of a house robbery. The man that owned the house was old and he gets confused sometimes. He sadly added a gun to that problem.
He shot someone he thought was breaking in when in actuality it was his granddaughter. She was sneaking back in after partying. Her grandfather shot her in the dark. He called the cops. They responded and the old man came to see it was his seventeen year old granddaughter he shot. She was rushed to the hospital. He meanwhile had to be detained by the police.
When the man recognized the teen, John stepped in immediately to comfort him. He should have left it to Celina and she said as much to him. She said that the man was going to have a hard time trusting someone that looks like her. He didn’t have to make it worse by taking over and making her look like a subordinate.
John has an unconscious bias. He stepped in to help a young woman. He forgot she was more than that. She was a cop. She has to know how to handle herself in these situations. And so Nolan went on to give her that chance.
He let Celina take down a burly dude twice her size. She did it on her own and she passed her test. She was on her way to becoming a real cop. Not just a rookie. It’s sad that it couldn’t be said about the other rookies.
They both made mistakes. Officer Ridley was late on his second day. He had a doctor’s appointment. He had cancer several years back. He’s since has to be tested every year to see if it came back and he was currently waiting on results because his blood work came back as irregular.
Chen felt for the kid. She really did. She just couldn’t allow him to continue to make mistakes. He had a chance to capture the vigilante and his head was elsewhere. The vigilante got away.
The vigilante was later spotted at a crime scene. It was believed he escalated things. He usually steps in for robberies and that time he actually killed a gangbanger. Only it wasn’t in fact him. The cops later caught the Watcher. His real name was Thomas Forsyth. He was a former cop. He carries a gun and doesn’t use it.
The guy also had an alibi for the murder. It turns out there was a copycat. The copycat was willing to kill because the victim in this case was a horrible human being. He wasn’t just some gangbanger.
He killed a girl and bragged about it once the District Attorney dropped the case. The gang he was in was so feared that none of the witnesses came forward. They didn’t want to risk retaliation. Well, their killer was the mother of the dead teen that the gang killed and so she pretended to be vigilante to take revenge.
The cops realized that the same time as the gang. They went to her house to find the gang trying to kill her and they were forced to intervene. In was in that moment, the rookies finally showed common sense.
Officer Penn had been living out of his car. He did that because he has debts. He took out some loans when he thought he’d make it to the NFL. He then injured his knee and he couldn’t play again or pay off the debts. His CO felt for him too, but he still told the kid to find a proper home or he was going to be washed out of uniform.
Celina helped the new guy. She introduced him to Smitty. Smitty got the kid a RV in the lot were most cops live to save money. The lot was truly the best for a lot of cops. Most of them have been divorced multiple times.
Penn also got a safe place that was on low rent. He still has to rebuild Tim’s trust yet he did do better on the job. He helped the veterans cops take down the gang before anyone else was hurt. He still has a lot to do to redeem himself and it was only their second shift with the police department.
Nyla meanwhile ran into some issues with her husband. James invited a few people to their house. They were supposed to share ideas about rebuilding trust with the police. Nyla agreed to talk to a few people only James invited about twenty of them instead. They were also rather rude. They demanded that Nyla change everything about her career. And so she stormed out of there without talking to anyone else.
Nyla loves James. James loves Nyla. They might have gotten married too soon. She loves being a cop. He feels there’s more to do for the community. Opposites attract will only get you so far.
THE END!
