In tonight’s The Rookie episode, Officer John Nolan was dealing with a lot. He was separated from his wife. She went away for her own safety after her ex-husband broke out of prison. It’s common belief that the same man wanted to punish her as well as John for the part they played in his arrest. Jason Wyler wasn’t exactly stable.
He posed a very real danger. John knew that before he married Bailey and so he knew his own life was at risk. He updated the alarm system. He’s never far away from his side piece. He stayed on guard to the point of paranoia.
John even asked his friend to break in. He wanted to see if it was secure. He bribed Sergeant Tim Bradford with Lakers tickets and he earned them tonight. He easily broke into the house.
John didn’t know he was there until Tim popped open a soda can. Now, that’s made him even more paranoid. John knew he was never going to rest easy unless he got answers and he tried to get them. He tried to talk to an acquaintance of Jason’s without the proper clearance. The acquaintance was sitting in a cell for the murder of two teenagers.
Before he was transferred to prison, John tried to talk to him. The guy’s name is Daniel Goodwin. He wasn’t talking to cops without a lawyer and he told John that he wasn’t going to talk without a deal.
John couldn’t give him that. He still tried to get answers only Detective Graham stepped in to save his case against Goodwin. He also warned John that trampling on people’s rights was the wrong way to go about getting answers about Jason. John was told if he tried again that he’d get written up. John tried going to Wesley for help. And Wesley gave him an idea.
Wesley told him that a man like Goodwin was never going to talk to cops. He has a long track record. If they wanted him to talk, they have to turn to someone he’s willing to talk to. Goodwin has a mother.
He also has a younger brother. The brother was in some level trouble and John offered to look out for him in exchange for the mother getting answers. Which she did. She later contacted him with news. Her son said that Southern Front put out a contract out on Jason’s life. They’ve hired a known hitman known as “El Mavado”.
It sounded like great news to Nyla. She’s seen El Mavado’s work before. He’s left bodies all along the US-Mexican border. She figured with a man as dangerous as that Jason was bound to get killed. Only John didn’t want Jason to end up in some unmarked grave. He wanted to put Jason back behind bars. He wanted justice.
He didn’t want revenge. John started looking for Jason on his own. He came to ponder if a car from an earlier crime scene might be connected to Jason or El Malvado himself. The make, model, and partial plate all matched up. It was from six months ago. It was Smitty’s case. Smitty later informed John that the detective who took over hadn’t followed up on it.
John then decided to follow up the lead himself. He didn’t call for backup. Or tell any officers what he was doing. He pursued someone he suspected was dangerous and he put his life on the line.
He did something without the benefit of friends. They knew he was struggling. Celina tried to talk to Lucy about it. Lucy dismissed it because she got caught up with Rachel’s return. Rachel was a friend. She also used to date Tim and so her ghosting Lucy wasn’t a big thing. They were only reconnecting now because Rachel was moving back to LA.
Lucy needed friends right now. Tamara moved out. Tim dumped her. She didn’t make detective. She’s been going through a lot and hat’s why the situation with John passed her by. Also, Lieutenant Grey found out about the bet she had with Tim. The bet was on who could make the better rookie. Grey thought as punishment that they should switch rookies.
They tried to continue the bet and it was ultimately a draw when both of their rookies failed to follow the chain of command. They went rushing in on a hostage situation. They saved a woman’s life while also getting in serious trouble.
The new rookies were told it would be a miracle they don’t wash out of the program. Luckily for them, it’s so expensive to train them that no one wanted to waste the money on failures.
The rookies got to stay to fight another day. John however found El Malvado. He stopped the assassin from torturing a lead to get Jason’s whereabouts. John heard that Jason was shacked up somewhere with a new girlfriend. He could have walked away right then and there and instead he continued to pursue Malvado. The area also was a dead zone for his cell phone.
Meaning John couldn’t call for help even when he needed it the most, but Celina noticed he was missing. She raised the alarm. John’s friends followed his steps.
They tracked his last movements to a warehouse and went there. By then, El Malavdo had already escaped. The man he had been torturing was rushed to a hospital and so John saved a life that day. It also made him realize that he couldn’t live in fear. He was going to scale back on the security system. He didn’t need it to be so sensitive.
Something he realized when Bailey returned home early. It took her forever to get in. She had to break in tonight now that John had removed the key on the door knob for something biometric. He was going to fix that soon. And in other news, Nyla keeps running into an issue with her husband.
James knew she was a cop when he married her only his sudden distrust of LAPD was making things hard at home.
THE END!
