Someone shot up the shelter. The shelter was full pf people seeking safety during a wildfire. It was full of kids and yet that didn’t matter to the shooter. The shooter didn’t care as long as he got his target. The target was a young woman named Kylie Thomas. She worked at the shelter with Detective Nyla Harper’s husband, James. James and Kylie were close. They were a little too close. Kylie wanted their friendship to be something more and she kissed James. James was married. He pushed her away. He told her he loves his wife.
What James didn’t count on was that the kiss was witnessed by someone. Officer John Nolan saw the kiss. He was Nyla’s friend. He didn’t know if he should tell her or not and so he sought another friend’s advice. He spoke with Wesley. He told Wesley that James kissed someone else. Wesley tried to downplay it at the time, but he was forced to mention it after the shooting. He had to tell the investigators that jealousy could be a motive. Wesley also had to say that they needed to cover all ground and that included investigating Nyla.
A good defense attorney could claim that Nyla hired the shooter to take out her husband. James cheated on her. She was also connected to the shooter. The shooter was Connor Lowe. He was a gangbanger. He was affiliated with the Six Street Devils. Nyla arrested him eighteen months ago. Nyla had to be properly investigated and even Nyla realized that for herself. She hadn’t known about the kiss. She just knew that it would look bad if the cops didn’t investigate her. She agreed to let them search her house, check her bank statements, and even check her gun.
Nyla wasn’t afraid of scrutiny. Sure, she was arguing a lot with her husband. It’s their love language. There hasn’t been a time when they weren’t arguing and so her friends on the force went looking through Kyle’s life. They found out she was working a side job where someone died recently. There was a chance she could have witnessed the murder of a rival gangbanger and that Lowe was trying to keep her quiet. The cops put out a BOLO for Lowe. Lucy and Tim almost caught him when Lowe hit a woman with his car. And the officers stayed behind to offer first aide to the newest victim.
The charges against Lowe were racking up. There was also more stuff they found out about James. When the cops searched the house, they found a photo. The photo was of James with a known fugitive named Leonard Kelce. The photo was taken at the house James shared with his wife. It didn’t look good for James or Nyla that the man was there. The cops had to file the photo as evidence. Wesley recused himself from the case. He was friends with the suspect and so a different ADA was assigned.
ADA Eckert was rude. She was demanding. She didn’t care about not hurting Nyla. She found out about the photo and she immediately went to interrogate Nyla at the hospital. Nyla was waiting to hear if her husband will make it or not when Eckert revealed everything. She revealed there was a kiss. She revealed Nolan saw it. She tried to destroy the faith Nyla had in her friends. It wasn’t Eckert’s job to interrogate the suspect. It was up to the cops to do that. Eckert trampled over Nyla’s rights and Lieutenant Grey warned her against crossing that line again.
Grey knew why Eckert did that. Their department was just coming off of a corruption scandal. They couldn’t afford another scandal and so Nyla didn’t let Eckert rile her. She told her friends to continue the investigation. She also spoke with Wesley. Wesley and James were best friends. He would know if James was cheating. Wesley said he wasn’t. He said James only ever mentioned his devotion to Nyla and that was enough for her. Wesley stayed by Nyla’s side at the hospital. It was everyone else that continued investigating.
The elderly woman that Lowe hit with her car was taken to the hospital. There was little chance she’d survive and already people were fighting over her belongings. Her caretaker didn’t feel she was fairly compensated for her work with the woman. She pretended to be the daughter to rob the woman in a coma and it would have worked if the real daughter hadn’t showed up. The two of them were arguing about a drying woman’s diamond rings when the cops broke up the argument. They also arrested the caretaker.
Lowe was drawing some unnecessary attention to his gang. Angela reached out to his boss. She told him that Lowe shot a cop’s husband. He was going to be hunted from now until forever if he wasn’t caught. He could also kick off a gang war by being sloppy. His boss hadn’t liked that. He told the cops where Lowe was hiding. He was hiding on the set of a show that went on hiatus. The cops converged on the area. They eventually found Lowe and he was arrested before he could hurt anyone else. There was also some good news. James woke up.
James told Nyla from the start that Kylie kissed him. He also said he pushed her away. He loves his wife and he told Nyla that he would never hurt her. While Nolan was investigating the shooting, his wife was admitted into the hospital for dehydration. Nolan asked Celina to watch Bailey for him. Though the two of them managed to solve a crime at the hospital. They found two guys that robbed a meth lab and hid the money in their butts. The guys were so stupid that they happily confessed their crimes to Celina. They were her first arrest as a P2.
Bailey was fine. Nolan got to return Nyla’s gun to him when he went to pick up his wife. Nolan admitted to Nyla that he was the witness and Nyla suspected it was him long before Eckert. She said Nolan was radiating in guilt. And that he had nothing to apologize for.
Nolan and Nyla are close and they will stay close.
