On tonight’s The Voice episode, “The Voice” is back for an all new season. Adam Levine is back. He was one of the original judges. He took some time off and now he’s ready to compete again. Joining him this season is returning legend, John Legend.
Michael Bublé was also returning after an amazing season twenty-six win, but the final judge this season is newbie Kelsea Ballerini. She’s filled in for others.
She’s just never been a judge or coach for a full season. She like the others are amazing singers. They all brought something different to the table. It will be interesting to watch how they select their teams and what their coaching style does for their contestants.
The judges all performed together at the start of the night. They performed Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”. It was quite beautiful and a great way to kick off night one of the Blind Auditions. Up first was Grace Miller-Moody. She’s twenty. She was from South Carolina. She was currently going to college. She put that on hold to pursue singing and she chose to perform Maroon Five’s “Sunday Morning”. It was quite bold with Adam being right there. And she still knocked it out of the park with her rendition.
Grace received a four chair turn. Adam doesn’t normally turn for people performing his own songs. The fact that he did with Grace just goes to show that she was incredibly talented. Her family was so proud of her. Only they all knew what Grace’s choice was going to be. She went with Adam. She was always going to choose Adam if he turned for her and Adam couldn’t help bragging about getting the first four chair turn. Next up was Renzo. He was thirty-three. He was from Pennsylvania. He was also the proud father of the most adorable girls.
Renzo took time away from home to compete, but he missed his girls. He was thinking of them when he performed “Simple Man”. It was such a great rendition. He has this soulful and raspy voice. It should have been a four chair turn in all honesty. It wasn’t because Kelsea didn’t turn around. Kelsea later explained why she didn’t. She said she knew she couldn’t compete with the guys on this one and that’s funny because Adam got blocked. John blocked him because he wanted Renzo that badly. Renzo would go on to choose John as his coach.
Next up was Iris Herrera. She was from Michigan. She also competed last season. She auditioned with a song that wasn’t true to her and the judges could tell. They didn’t turn for her, but Michael did tell her to come back with a different song and that maybe things will be different. Well, she came back. She performed “You Are My Sunshine”. She slowed it down. She added a twang and she impressed the judges tonight. Michael was the only one that has ever heard her perform before. And even he turned for her performance tonight.
She really redeemed herself tonight. John and Kelsea also turned for her. It was just Adam that denied her a four chair turn. Something other judges harped on. They were all proud of Iris for returning and they didn’t mind that she chose Kelsea. Iris said she grew up around strong female figures. She wanted to continue to have that with Kelsea. Next up was Jadyn Cree. She might look familiar because her dad was on season twenty-five. It was Bryan Olsen. He was a runner-up back then and he did his best to help Jadyn. Jadyn chose the song “I’m Into You” tonight.
It probably wasn’t the best song for her. It took her a while before the judges turned for her. When they did, it was Michael and Kelsea. They weren’t coaches during her father’s season and so them turning for her tonight was the first time they’ve heard her sing. John on the other hand heard her perform a line when her father was chosen on his season. He kicked himself afterwards her performance for not turning for her when he realized who her father was. Her father was a rare talent. John knew he missed out on a sure thing with Jadyn.
Jadyn chose Michael’s team. The judges all have one person on their team now and it was only the halfway mark. Next up was Zach Zaro. He was from New York. He was twenty-eight. He’s done Broadway only that wasn’t his passion. He wanted to perform music. His own music. He chose “Hit Me Baby One More Time” for his performance tonight. It was good. It just wasn’t good enough for the judges. They didn’t turn for him and who knows. He could always come back next season with a different song. He could pull an Iris and it might work out for him.
Darius J was up next. He was from Florida. He’s thirty-five. His style has been described as “different” by his sister. He was thirteen when he came out and he was often bullied at school. He turned to singing to escape from horrible kids. He also moved to New Jersey to go live with his uncle. He fit in more at his new school. He had friends. He found himself there. He came tonight with the song “Caught Up”. It sounded nothing like the original. He really made that song his own and even added a somewhat Spanish feel to it.
Darius was a three chair turn. The holdout was John. He just heard the song from Usher and that stopped him from appreciating Darius’s version to the fullest. Despite that, John still helped Darius pick a great coach. Darius went with Adam. Next up was Angie Ray. She’s from Florida. She now lives in Nashville full-time. She was pursuing a Country music career there. Her family is Cuban-American and she was first generation. Angie was another bold one. She chose Kelsea’s song “Penthouse”. And of course Kelsea had to turn for her.
Kelsea was the only turn for Angie, but that’s okay because Angie only ever wanted Kelsea. She admitted earlier that she’d commit violence if anyone blocked Kelsea and it’s a good thing it didn’t come to that. Next up was Carlos Santiago. He performed “Right Here Waiting”. He’s originally from Puerto Rico. He started singing since he was three. Michael heard a little Josh Groban in there and some Broadway. He liked Carlos’s style. He was the first to turn for him. Adam was the second. Michael was afraid of losing to Adam and was genuinely surprised when Carlos picked him over Adam.
Next up was Dan Kiernan. He’s thirty-three. He was from New York. He wanted to be catwoman as a kid and his father never judged him for it. He just got the catwoman costume for Dan like it was any other costume. He had a great dad. His father passed away a while ago. It was hard on Dan. He never got the chance to say goodbye because his dad passed before he could make it to his bedside. Only Dan now likes to say his father has the best seat in the house for his performance tonight. He performed “High Hopes”.
Michael and John turned for him. Michael turned at the start of the song. John turned at almost the end of the song. They all loved the performance and that included the judges that didn’t turn in time. Kelsea pulled the judge’s Coach Replay button tonight. She wanted a chance of having Dan on her team even if she was late to the decision. Dan was so moved by that he joined her team. He was actually aiming for Michael’s team before tonight and he really did change his mind on the spot when he saw the lengths Kelsea was willing to go to have him.
Lilli Doll was up next. She was twenty-three. She was from Ohio. Some didn’t believe that Lilli Doll was her real name and yet it’s the one on her birth certificate. Her mother was creative. It helped Lilli to become creative. She makes jewelry. She makes other accessories as well. She views her artistry through that creative lens. She chose the song “Heart of Glass” tonight. It was a notoriously difficult song. It hurt Lilli more than it helped her. She didn’t get any chair turns tonight and again tonight doesn’t have to mean “no” forever. She can always come back later.
And the final contestant of the night happened to be Ethan Eckenroad. He performed “Northen Attitude”. His voice and his guitar skills instantly caught Adam’s attention. He turned first. Kelsea was the second to turn. John was the third to turn. Michael completed the rare four chair turn for Ethan. Adam said Ethan has the best voice of the night. Which you know could be hurtful for the ones that were on his team while it also appealed to Ethan. Ethan ignored the other judges’ pitches because he was fully Team Adam. Adam now has two four chair turns on his team this season. And so came back with a vengeance tonight.
THE END!
