Tonight was Night 1 of the Battles! The coaches brought in their own mentors. Kelsea had Little Big Town helping out. Adam brought in Kate Hudson. John turned to Coco Jones to bring out the best in his contestants. Only Michael trumped them all with Cynthia Erivo. There wasn’t a soul that hasn’t seen the “Wicked” movie. The season’s mentors were there to see what the coaches missed. Team Adam was up first tonight. He paired Darius J. with Britton Moore. He gave them the song “Creep” by Radiohead. And Kate was great help as well as great fun.

Kate was a longtime fan of the show. She’s done musicals, movies, and television. There was nothing she couldn’t do. She and Adam loved the original “Creep” but they decided to give a strip down version to their artists. Both contestants saw it in a different ways. Britton saw it through the lens of a pastor’s kid. He always had to do the right thing. He also had to serve as an example and never just be. Darius saw the song through the lens of an addict. He struggled with sobriety to the point he lost friends, family, and career opportunities. He knew what it was like to be an outsider.

Darius and Britton have very different sounds. The coaches went into tonight listening to who felt the song more and Adam wasn’t disappointed. The winner of tonight’s first battle was Britton. He tackled that high note perfectly. Darius also put on a great performance. It just wasn’t as good as Britton. Adam chose Britton as the winner of that battle. Then everyone tried to Steal Darius. Adam remembered how great he is and so he used his Save to try and keep Darius. Darius had the option of three coaches. He later chose to stick with Team Adam.

Next up was Team John. John had Coco in his corner. She was another triple threat. She also does songwriting and dancing. She was currently known as the Queen of R&B. John’s artists loved her. John paired Pablo Herrera and Kolby Cordell. He gave them the song “Tacones Rojos”. It’s a song that John has performed himself. It was a bilingual version of the song. Pablo loved the Latin feel to it. He loves singing in Spanish. He said he has more passionate tone when he performs in Spanish. Kolby connected to the song on a different level.

The song was about love. It remined Kolby of what he had with his ex. They co-parent now and they both found joy in letting their son be the love of their lives. Kolby later shined with his rendition of the song. Pablo was good too, but of course they could only be one winner. The winner was Kolby. Even the other coaches acknowledged it. John soon named Kolby the winner of this battle and Pablo was sadly eliminated tonight. Next up was Team Michael. He and Cynthia both have that classic voice.

Cynthia missed out on the Oscar only she gets another shot with “Wicked: Part Two”. She was bound to be an EGOT winner one day and she was great assistance tonight with Michael’s team. Michael paired Jadyn Cree with Braxton Garza. They both have such beautiful tones. Jadyn grew up singing. Her father was a performer. He was also on season twenty-five of “the Voice”. He came in third. Jadyn was hoping to come in first this season. Michael gave his artists the song “Danny’s Song”. The song brought out the difference between the artists. Jadyn’s voice was more sweet and pure.

Braxton’s voice was more Country. It also has a rasp to it. Braxton performed the song as someone imitating the original artist. Jadyn performed the song in honor of her cats. There was a sweet innocence to her tone. She was still young and she has some growing up to do only Michael still named her as the winner of this battle. Braxton was eliminated tonight. Kelsea had wanted him during the Blinds. And it was a little surprising that she didn’t try to Steal him now that he was available.

Next up was Team Kelsea. Kelsea brought in a literal band of helpers. Little Big Town was a great musical group and they knew best how to find a spot for all four of them to shine while still highlighting each other. Kelsea paired Tatum Scott with Angie Rey. They both chose heartbreak songs for their Blinds. They were also both huge fans of Kelsea. They fell apart when she turned for them. They were still geeking out tonight. They loved this opportunity. They took full advantage of it when Kelsea gave them the song “Girl”.

It was a Country song. It was also a heartbreak song. Kelsea said she gave it to them because she wanted to hear both sides of that heartbreak. Their mentors came in handy. The ladies were single for each other at first. Little Big Town asked them to instead perform to each other. Like they were bringing each other out of the pain of the heartbreak. Their voices grew together. They got to be strong together. It was a tough battle for Kelsea. This was her first and she didn’t know who to choose.

Kelsea eventually went with Angie because Angie shined just a little bit brighter than Tatum. But don’t worry about Tatum because John used his Steal to save her. He wanted her since the Blinds and he grabbed her the first chance he could. Next up was Team Adam again. He paired Ethan Eckenroad and Fran Posla. Ethan was a rare four chair turn. He has an Indie vibe to his voice. The same goes for Fran. Fran’s voice was full of grit. She and Ethan worked great together. They were given the song “July”.

The song brought out something beautiful in the artists. Fran sometimes hated her raspiness because she couldn’t see how special it was and it had been Adam that got her to think about it differently. Ethan also had an amazing voice. He sometimes hid behind the guitar during his performances. Him leaving the guitar behind for tonight allowed for his voice to shine on its own. They weren’t even Michael’s team and he said that this was his favorite battle of the night. It was a tough call for Adam.

Adam chose to go with Ethan. He knew that Ethan would always deliver and he didn’t know if Fran would have the same consistency. Next up was Team John. He paired Nell Simmons and Oliver Kuper Harris together. He also gave them “Feel Like Makin Love” in honor of the late Roberta Flack. Both women have great soulful voices. John said he never understood why Nell was a one chair turn when she has such a unique tone. Coco was right there with him. They both loved this duo. Sadly, it couldn’t stay that way because it was a Battle.

The ladies transported everyone to another era. John chose Olivia as the winner of the battle. Then he used his Save and Adam tried to use his Steal to get Nell. And Nell chose to stay with John because John did see her talent first.
