In tonight’s The Voice episode, it was Night 2 of the Battles! Up first was Team John. John brought in Coco Jones to help get his team into shape. He first paired Bryson Battle against Ari Camille. They both have an R&B feel to their tones. Bryson tends have a classical take on the field. Ari’s rendition was more modern R&B. The two artists worked great together, but Bryson sometimes fell back on his musical theater training. He was supposed to be playing Jesus Christ Superstar at his school. And he missed it so that he could learn everything he could from John Legend.

Ari was starting school. She had a rough time in high school. She was diagnosed with a rare form of depression and she’s done a lot to improve her own mental health. Sane for Bryson. Bryson came from a small town in North Carolina. It was his parents that took him to see musicals because that way he could see himself in the stars onstage and realize there’s a place for him. Both Bryson and Ari were great singers. It’s sad that John could only pick one and he ended up picking Bryson after their rendition of “Made for Me”.

Ari also sounded amazing. Two of the coaches tried to Steal her when she was cut from John’s team. Adam and Kelsea both made pitches. Ari felt Adam was a better fit for her and she chose to join his team. Next up was Team Adam. Adam received help from Kate Hudson to put together great battles. He paired Hayden Grove and Lucia Flores-Wiseman. They both have an old school vibe to their voices. Hayden leaned more towards jazz and so Adam might have favored him with his song choice.

Adam gave his artists the song “My Funny Valentine”. It was made for Hayden’s voice. He was like Michael in a lot of ways. He could give Sinatra a run for his money. It was Lucia that was the surprising underdog. She has such an amazing stage presence. It draws you in. Its why Adam turned for her in the first place and he gave them this song because he knew they would kill it. They would make it their own. And he wasn’t wrong because their rendition was very beautiful.

Luica’s voice was very lived in. Hayden’s voice was more tailored. The coaches tended to favor Luica. Her voice brought something unexpected to the rendition and so Adam went with the overall opinion. He chose Lucia. He said Lucia was very different. Which he loves because he himself leans towards the different. Its why he also went with Grace-Miller Moody during her battle.

Grace’s battle happened during the commercial break. The audience didn’t get to see the full thing. Just a snippet. They saw Adam chose Grace over Tori Templet. They also saw that Adam was very proud of Grace. Then it was onto the next one. Team Kelsea went next. She paired Brook Woods against Alanna Lynise. Both of them were powerhouses. They even took note of each other when they joined Kelsea’s team. They knew from early on that the other was their biggest competitor.

Kelsea’s mentor was Little Big Town. The singing group was the best to help artists. They understood about allowing the other to shine and still be heard. Kelsea gave her artists the song “Angels like You”. It was about heartbreak. The artists both brought their personal experience into feeling the song. Alanna when she left home. Brook when she lost her grandmother. The best thing about this performance was that they got to work together and be their best selves.

Their rendition was very moving. There were some issues with pitch. The first half sounded better in rehearsal and the second half sounded better on the stage. Kelsea had a hard time picking the winner. She chose Alanna because she felt Alanna was stronger. Next up was Team Michael. Michael paired Barry Jean Fontenot against Kaiya Hamilton. They were the powerhouses from his team. He actually gave them the best mentor.

Cynthia Erivo was very helpful. She and Michael took this pairing to great heights. Especially with the song they chose. They gave them the song “Cry to Me”. They helped Barry find his highest head voice. They also told Kaiya that she was holding back. She was giving a false high note like Aretha when she was capable of flooding the room. They have classical voices. They just needed to believe in themselves a little bit more. And they thankfully took that advice to great effect.

The other coaches loved this performance. They were surprised that Kiya wasn’t a four chair turn. Only no one was surprised when Michael named Kiya as the winner of that battle. Michael then used his Steal at the same time that Kelsea tried to use her Steal for Barry. Kelsea once again lost out when Barry chose to stay with Michael’s team. Michael was very tactical last season. He freely admits that and he says things were different this time around. He was now choosing joy.

Over the commercial break, Kameron Jaso won her round against Naomi Soleil. They were both Team Michael. They also performed the song “You Make My Dreams” together. Who knows maybe the full performance will be online soon for everyone wishing to see Kameron’s win for themselves. The same goes for Carlos Santiago who won his battle against Aaron Rizzo. These two were also from Team Michael. And Michael had given them the song “Gravity.

Next up was Team John. He paired Antonio against Bd.ii. They were both huge fans of both John and Coco. They loved what she’s done and they couldn’t wait to impress her. One of them was a one chair turn. The other was a four chair turn, but its one thing to sing by yourself and it’s another to make a duet work. They both needed help from the coaches. They performed “Just Friends (Sunny)”. They were so good that the audience gave them a standing ovation. Even the other coaches joined in.

John had a hard time picking a winner. He ultimately chose to go with BD.ii. He knew he could go further with him than without him. Last up was Team Kelsea. She paired Jaelen Johnston against Hailey Wright. They were both Country. Both of their voices could be described as old Country. They have old souls to match. They were given the song “Neon Moon”. Jaelen was worried at first because he knows that he has a tendency to get screamy when he reaches for the high notes.

While Hailey preferred to hide in a different set of notes. Most of the time, the artists just need to hear that they can do it all and are capable of doing it all. Jaelen has a great voice. Hailey’s voice also couldn’t be slept on. They sang their song as a love song to each other. It was so good that even as Kelsea named Jaelen the winner – she already knew she was going to use her Save to keep Hailey on her team. And indeed she did.

THE END!
