Colter Shaw was back on the road tonight. He traveled all the way to the tri-state area. He was looking for a missing young man. The missing man’s mother was Ivy Hale. She was a client of Elliott’s and Elliott has worked with Colter before. He knew Colter was a guy to get results.
Ivy wasn’t just some client. She was the owner of Ivy Bakes. It was a chain of bakeries all around the country.
It made Ivy very wealthy. It also got her in trouble because she was being investigated for tax evasion.
Ivy was going through a lot. Which was why her son disappearance had her worried. Matt was the good kid. He did everything right. He went to college.
He joined a tech investment firm. He has his own career and Ivy likes to say he inherited her work drive. She was super proud of him. They were close. She didn’t think her son would disappear while she was in so much legal trouble.
She also contacted Matt’s job and she heard he walked out one day. It was so unlike him. She was worried something happened to her son.
What Ivy failed to mention was how controlling she was. Her son was an adult. He lived at his own place and Ivy still askes him to share his location with her. They’re constantly on the phone with each other.
She also blew up at him recently because he was finally dating someone. Ivy wasn’t ready to let go. Her cousin who also happens to work for her had talked with Colter.
Casey said that Matt was probably taking a breather from his mom. Ivy treated him like he was still a little kid. She didn’t want him having anyone else in his life.
Colter wasn’t sure who he should believe. Ivy the worried mother. Or Casey the nonchalant cousin. The one thing he was sure of was that he needed to find Matt.
Matt’s mother put out a fifty thousand reward on him. Colter went snooping around at Matt’s firm. He found out about Matt’s social media account that his mother didn’t know about.
He got photos of this new girlfriend that caused Matt to argue with his mother. The girl was pretty. She was an artist.
Matt’s secretary also saw a huge ring on her finger on one of the two occasions they met.
Unless Matt was secretly engaged, the ring might indicate that Matt was having an affair with a married woman. Colter tracked this woman’s down.
He found her tied up in her bathroom. The water was still running from the bath she never took. There was no telling why she was targeted and so Colter got answers.
The woman was married, but she and her husband were separated. They got married too young. They realized it was a mistake almost right away.
The girlfriend also mentioned that a woman came to the door and that she had a burly man for backup.
The guy took down Matt. The woman pulled a gun on the girlfriend before tying her up. Matt’s girlfriend didn’t know what led to the attack.
She just knew that Matt didn’t want her talking to the cops.
Luckily, Colter wasn’t a cop. He easily traced the attack on Matt back to a hotel. The hotel seemed on the up and up while all along there was a secret business running out of the basement.
It seemed mob affiliated. Cotler didn’t really care about that and he told the mafia that when he went asking for Matt.
The mob boss known as Lindo said that Ivy was pushing in on their business. Ivy wasn’t some baker. She was a mob boss. She has several politicians in her pocket and her bakeries were merely fronts to launder her ill-gotten money. Ivy has plenty of enemies.
She just didn’t know if one of them was ambitious enough to grab her son. Ivy should have mentioned that to Colter when they first met and oddly enough her biggest competition didn’t seem like he grabbed Matt. Matt never had anything to do with his mother’s business.
Also, families were considered off-limits nowadays. Colter found an ally amongst Ivy’s competitors. His name is Vargas. Matt and Vargas were childhood friends. They drifted apart when they realized they were on rival sides.
Vargas’s family worked for the Lindos. Matt on the other hand never worked for his mother. He and Vargas haven’t spoken in years.
Then one day they were both contacted by a burner number that claimed they were the other. Someone wanted them to be seen together. They realized that and immediately went separate ways.
There was a third rival that was trying to start a war between Ivy and the Lindos. Vargas stopped the Lindos from killing Colter and all he asked in return was for Matt to be found in time.
Whoever has Matt, they sent a ransom note to his mother with a photo of him. They even included one of his teeth to prove they meant business. Ivy thought it was the Lindos. It was instead a trap. Her son was grabbed to lure Ivy in and possibly kill her and her son.
And Elliott later explained why Ivy might have been targeted.
Elliott didn’t know that Ivy was a mob boss until after he endangered Colter. He was given Ivy’s case by the big boss at the firm and he didn’t know until recently that Ivy was trying to leave the business. She wanted to go legitimate.
She was cleaning up the business. Her son was helping her by putting everything right. He was a numbers guy. It makes no sense why he was grabbed by the Lindos when Ivy was already going to leave the business.
The one person that would go after mother and son was the cousin.
Casey wanted to inherit everything. He was only given a job because his dad died young. Ivy thought she was looking out for him by leaving him in charge of bakery promotions and deliveries. Only he didn’t want that crap job.
He wanted to run the whole thing. He wanted to be the new Ivy. He was annoyed that Matt was helping her go legitimate when he was there.
He felt he deserved to run the business if Matt wasn’t going to. Colter was able to reach Casey before he harmed anyone and Casey died by his own stupidity.
By then, Colter had already given Vargas what he needed to rescue Matt. Both Matt and Ivy were going to be alright. Colter also got a favor from Ivy.
He doesn’t think he’ll need it and she told him never say never. The Lindos might not be too happy that Colter knew about their secret business. And he was going to need someone to vouch for him.
