Colter was back on the road tonight. This time he headed towards Ohio. He worked a missing persons case there. Alice Baer disappeared one night from her home. She left behind her young son. She didn’t call anyone to watch him or even check up on him.

She just disappeared one night. Which was unusual to everyone who knows her. They all agreed that Alice was a good mother. She would never abandon her son. Her mother was also staying in the guest house behind the main house.

She could easily have asked her mom to watch Miles if it had been emergency. And that’s why her mother suspected something happened.

Judith was worried about her daughter. She also couldn’t risk going to the police about her missing daughter. Alice was going through a contentious divorce with her ex-husband. They were fighting over custody of their son and Alice doesn’t have the best history.

She struggled with pill addiction years ago. Her mom said she was clean now. Colter came to believe Judith when he found the Vicodin. Alice had a bottle of Vicodin. It was over half full and she was given it months ago. If she had fallen off the wagon, she would have since emptied the bottle.

Colter asked Judith about Alice’s ex-husband. Judith said Greg was a good guy. It was Alice that wanted a divorce and her mom mentioned she was already seeing someone. Judith thought Alice met the new guy online.

Only Alice’s messages told a different story. She was in communication with Sal Markowitz. He was married. He’s also been trying to end things with Alice. According to their texts, Sal said it was too dangerous. He didn’t want someone getting hurt. Colter took that to mean that Sal didn’t want to lose half in a divorce.

Except Colter found Alice’s car. She was lured out that night. There was a fight. There was blood left behind and Alice was taken without her cell phone or her purse. Colter then sought out Sal. He found Sal decapitated in his own bathroom. Sal’s wife was at a conference in Detroit.

She didn’t do this. Colter went looking around the victim’s home before he called 911 and he found a file. Sal was a therapist. Alice was training to be a therapist when she got pregnant and dropped out of the program. And before she dropped out, Alice was working with young offenders.

Alice treated someone named PJ. She referred PJ to Sal. They both wanted PJ to get treatment. There was no affair. They were merely colleagues and they both realized that PJ couldn’t be saved. PJ was recently released from prison. He killed his stepdad. There was history of abuse.

PJ served his time as a minor. He was released when he became an adult and that’s when he developed new problems. PJ confessed to Sal that he was stalking a girl that works at a convenience store. Sal thought he was violent and dangerous. He wanted to discontinue PJ’s therapy.

PJ was so troubled by then that he didn’t take it well when Sal tried to drop him. He lashed out. He doesn’t respond well to abandonment. He killed Sal. He was also going to either kill or kidnap the girl he was stalking. Luckily, this girl was saved that night.

Colter tracked down the convenience store. He got footage of PJ taking out a knife and talking himself up before he entered the store. The one thing that stopped him was that a patrol car drove down that street. PJ got so scared that he ran off and the security footage got a photo of his face.

PJ was Paul James Hamilton. He was supposed to live with his mother after he got released only she didn’t miss him. She never visited him once in juvie. She acted like he didn’t exist and she moved on with her life.

PJ couldn’t handle that. He killed his mother the first chance he could. He followed that by going on a killing spree. Colter was worried when he found the bodies because he knew that Alice was living on borrowed time. There could be anything that makes PJ snap.

They tracked down PJ’s storage locker. He seemed to be suffering from transference.

PJ latched onto Alice. He saw her as the mother he always wanted. She was the one person that seemed to get him and he hated that she “left” him to start her own family. It reminded him of his mother. His mother let her husband abuse PJ. She laughed alongside him whenever he called PJ a freak.

When PJ decapitated Sal, he left Sal’s head with his mother’s corpse. He explained to Alice that he gave his mother what she always wanted – a man that could never leave her. He laughed about that and Alice told him that wasn’t very nice.

PJ abducted her so that he could always have her. Alice tried to explain that she couldn’t help him. She didn’t finish her degree and there was a reason she left the field. Alice said she was internalizing so much pain from others that it left her with an addiction.

She started drinking. She started doing drugs. She did everything she could just so that she wouldn’t live with the trauma from her patients.

Alice tried to tell PJ that he needed someone else. A real therapist. Someone that could help him Alice was explaining when Colter tracked them down.

PJ used to work for Happy Hollow Amusement Park. It was a seasonal park and so it was left empty at this time of the year.

The place was PJ’s happy place. He even drew it in the pictures he has of his imaginary relationship with Alice. Colter found PJ and Alice there.

PJ refused to give himself up. He also turned on Alice when he saw that she grabbed his knife and he was about to kill her when Colter killed him.

PJ was now dead.

Alice was reunited with her son and Colter got the reward money – not bad for a day’s work.

THE END
