On tonight’s Tracker episode, Colter Shaw was talked into going to Virginia tonight. There was a prisoner that escaped police custody. Her name was Justine. She was serving life sentence for a convenience store robbery that went bad. It left her with nothing to lose. Which in turn made her dangerous.
She was being transported to and from the hospital after she got into a fight with her cell mate. She somehow hid a device in her mouth. She used that to undo her cuffs and she took the guards by surprise by claiming she was sick.
No guard wants to clean up after someone that was sick. They pulled over to help her. She used that to her advantage. She beat one woman so bad that she was sent to the hospital. She also took a hostage. She took Rachel Sherwood hostage. She was the niece of Detective Helen Brock.
Brock has worked with Colter before and she’s the one that called him on this case. She needed his help. She knew her niece was dead the second Justine no longer needed her. Brock also went as far as to temporarily deputize Colter because the department doesn’t do “rewards”.
Colter doesn’t normally work for law enforcement. They came with their own set of rules. Rules that he sometimes enjoys breaking just to get the job done, but because it was Brock, he agreed to help.
He even brought out the big guns. He contacted Billie. Billie owes him one and he needed a woman to go undercover at Justine’s prison.
Colter found out that Justine was receiving help from someone at the prison. He didn’t know if it was a guard or another prisoner. What he did know was that someone set Justine up with supplies on the outside.
Justine brought her hostage to a well-hidden bunker. There was money in the safe there. There were guns as well. The odds are she’ll try to make it to the border or at best wait out until it was safe enough to make it to the border.
Colter needed answers and that’s where Billie came in. Billie went to the prison while Colter worked with Brock to track the fugitive’s last movement. They understand someone from the prisoner was calling in favors of their own for Justine. Whoever it was had a getaway car lined up for her. And it was two against one with the hostage they had.
Until they tried to steal a car. There was a good Samaritan that tried to report Justine’s car when they spotted it in parking lot. Her getaway drive opened fire and so did the Samaritan.
They ended up killing each other. Justine then took off in a dead guy’s car only no one knows if Rachel was still with her. Rachel could have escaped in the chaos. Or Justine might still be holding her prisoner. The upside to the shooting was that they found out who was helping the fugitive. Her dead driver was Felipe Berata. He was the brother of Maria Berata. She was another prisoner.
Maria was known as Mamma Roach. She was serving a life sentence. The only way she’d stick out her own neck for another person was if she was getting something in return.
It was up to Billie to find out what that was. Billie pretended to be a prisoner. There was only one person in the whole prison that knew it was a cover. It was one guard by the name of Hollander. Billie was told on day one to turn to Hollander if she runs into any problems and naturally Billie disregarded that because she thought she could take care of herself.
That wasn’t arrogance talking. Billie has been in prison before. She knew how to handle herself and she found out early on that the prison guards were in Mamma Roach’s pocket. She ran that prison. Once Billie sent a message out to Colter, he realized something. He realized Rachel was no hostage. Rachel was driving the van that night. She could easily have waited it out in the van until backup arrived. She only left the van because she was a part of the plan. Justine didn’t abduct Rachel. Rachel abducted Justine.
The bunker was originally Justine’s. She promised Mamma Roach a payday. She took Rachel to the bunker and the money inside wasn’t enough to pay off her debt to Mamma Roach. Rachel was going to get Mamma Roach’s money one way or another. If it wasn’t in the bunker, then Justine has to get the rest from her family.
They were heading to Justine’s family when Rachel called her aunt. She claimed to have escaped from Justine. She said that Justine was heading in one direction and Colter had the burner phone she was using traced. Rachel was deliberately sending them down the wrong road.
Colter was able to prove that to Brock. She knew now that her niece wasn’t a victim. She told Colter the whole story about her sister. Her sister had problems with drugs.
She’s been in and out of prisons for years. It was hard on Rachel. She never had any consistency. Brock didn’t realize how messed up her niece was. Rachel didn’t latch onto Mamma Roach seeking a maternal figure. She was in it purely for the cash. She left Mamma Roach’s brother die. She was also demanding that Mamma Roach provide additional backup when they rob Justine’s stepmom’s office.
The only thing Rachel cared about was herself. She wants the money. She wants the power. She doesn’t care about anyone else and so its good thing Brock brought in Colter. She knew Colter wouldn’t report her niece to the cops. He’d allow her a chance to talk Rachel down. The two tracked Rachel and Justine to the office. Helen tried to get Rachel to give up and, failing that, she had Colter sneak up behind Rachel. They took her down without firing a single shot. Both she and Justine were going to prison. And their dynamic will never be the same.
Billie luckily got out of prison before she could be killed, but Colter bought her favorite wine to make her feel better.
THE END!
