Women formally got the vote in the USA in 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution that says roughly that nobody will be denied voting privileges on the basis of sex. Big step that one. Now 90 years later The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has deemed that a song celebrating women’s submission to men and functional ownership by them – Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) by Beyonce – should win the award for Song of the Year. What is the song telling us?
I looked up the lyrics on the internet and I assure you that they are less than eloquent – the song repeatedly admonishes the ex-boyfriend for not taking possession of the narrator who is the ex-girlfriend or at least ex-sex partner – love is never even mentioned or suggested of course. So if the boy really liked "it" he should have put a ring on it. Like a farmer putting a ring through the nose of an ox. This is how Beyonce and The Academy view womens’ role in today’s shallow vacuous sex-obsessed pop world. What a downer.
