#TheStrain starts with Dutch chained up in the room. She’s shivering. Eichorst comes in and bring along a cop. Eichorst says he brought her some company. He pours schnapps down the guy’s throat then bites the guy to infect him. Eichorst snaps the guy’s neck and tells her every once in a while he enjoys a human cocktail. She asks what he’s going to do to her and he says – everything.
Abe wakes tied to a chair in the apartment where he found the book. He sees it nearby. He tries to move the chair towards it but then a man is there with a gun. He asks where the guy got the book but the man asks who he is. Abe calls him Rudyard and says his father burned his year. He reminds him about the nunnery in Austria. He says he saved his life as a child. He tells Rudyard to untie him.
Eichorst sits in front of Dutch and asks her to tell him something no one else knows about her. She says she’s a mystery to herself. He says she likes being looked at. He sniffs her perfume and says her appearance is very calculated. She says she doesn’t wear any. He sniffs her face and hair closely and says it’s shampoo. He offers to tell her something no one knows about him.
He says her scent reminds her of a perfume that filled him with desire and despair because he couldn’t possess the woman who wore it. He says he’s had power, respect, then says desire never brought him happiness and Dutch asks if he joined the Nazis since he couldn’t get laid. Eichorst says she couldn’t understand a thing like that. He gives her a last look and leaves her locked in the room.
We see a flashback to Eichorst selling radios back in the day. The woman is intrigued and asks how much it is. He says she can pay monthly for just two marks a month. Her husband comes in just as she signs. Her husband says there are layoffs at the plant and he tears up the paper and throws it at Eichorst. He stomps out and he leaves with his model radio and goes back to the office.
The company had a sales contest and he has to admit he sold no none today. He says most people can’t afford a luxury item like this. His boss tells him he has no fire in his belly and people can sense weakness. Helga, a beautiful woman who works in the office, looks at the exchange. Then the boss gives the sales award to Karl, his rival and they all leave for drinks. Helga stays behind as does Eichorst.
Helga tells Eichorst that he’s bad at selling radios because he’s destined for bigger things and calls the boss, Oscar, a bully. He asks her to have dinner with him but she says she has plans. She says she can on Saturday. He agrees with a smile. Aanya is up in her room when Gus finds her. He says he’s not one to run and then touches her cheek and she smiles at him then kisses him.
The kissing gets more passionate and she pulls off his shirt and they lie on the bed. Fet, Eph and Nora show up to Mayfair Hotel since that’s where they think Dutch was taken but see the National Guard have set up their HQ there. Gus hears a thump and a door while Aanya is still asleep. He wakes her and says it’s time to go. Angel packs some weapons and asks if they can trust these people to get them out.
Gus says he’s only going as far as the check point and says Angel needs to take care of them and makes him promise to get them to safety. The family comes down and they ask Gus to take a photo. They insists Angel gets in the photo too. Angel promises Gus that he will see them to safety. They leave the restaurant together. Eph says the cop lied but they decide to look around anyway. They go in the back.
They spot several abandoned cop cars and Nora sees an item of Dutch’s in one of them. Fet looks up and says the hotel looks half abandoned. Fet gives them some history of the hotel and says one section was sealed off when they ran out of money during renovations. They ask how to get inside and Fet says FDR. Abe asks Rudyard to untie him and says he owes him for his life. Rudyard says he’ll take the book.
He says the mother superior told him the book was cursed but it’s been good luck for him. Abe says the book will save mankind and Rudyard says someone else wants to buy it. Abe asks if he’s talking about Palmer and says the fate of the world is literally in his hands. Rudyard says people underestimate him and talk to him like he doesn’t understand. He says the book is his silver ticket to Tahiti. He leaves the apartment while a frustrated Abe struggles with his bonds.
At the Bronx check point, Gus drives the family up to the point. He gives his name. They ask him for papers and he says to just check the list for his name. Then a car speeds up and a woman gets out. She has papers in her hand. Gus gets out of the car and the cop says to drive on through. Gus tells Aanya they could have worked, just not right now and says he’ll come get her when this is all over. He kisses her and they have to go. She gives him one last kiss then goes. They thank him.
Angel gets out of the car and comes back. He says he promised to see them to safety and now the Guptas are safe. Angel and Gus get into the SUV with the woman and speed away. Eichorst expertly slices a pineapple and smiles. We see him back in the day at dinner with Helga and she talks about playing the violin. She talks sentimentally about it and he asks why she doesn’t play professionally.
Helga says it was her dream but then the crash came and her family needs her to work and help support them. He says she must go play violin and she kisses him then asks what he wants to do. He says he admires her for having a passion but he can’t find the thing at which he can excel and Helga says he may be a late bloomer. Then the restaurant is interrupted by a man making a speech.
It’s a Nazi who talks about the rise of the Third Reich where there will be no bread line and everyone will have a sense of purpose. He says the Recih needs them and points to Eichorst and says Germany needs him. Helga wants to leave and doesn’t like the attention. Later, they walk and Eichorst says it was a great speech but Helga says Hitler wants the Jews out. Eichorst says the Jews are parasites and leeches that ruined the banks.
Helga tells him she’s a Jew and asks if that’s how he sees her. He says he didn’t mean her or her family. He says Hitler was talking about foreign Jews, not German Jews. Helga says he’s not destined for better things, he’s right where he belongs at the bottom. She walks away and he’s devastated. Now, Eichorst comes back to Dutch and brings her the pineapple. She slaps it away and says he’s seasoning her. He knocks her to the floor and says this is not a dinner party.
He tells her to say she will eat the pineapple. She says yes and he tells her the phrase to say. She says it. He lets her up and selects a piece of it for her. He puts it to her mouth and she takes a bite. He says, good girl. Then he says, as a seasoning, pineapple is exquisite. She keeps eating it as he leaves. Once he’s gone, she spits it out and whimpers.
Abe gets loose of the ropes eventually and goes outside to the noise of sirens, screams and chaos in the distance. He walks away with determination. Dutch goes for the cops body and tries to use her feet to get his mace off his belt. Eichorst comes back to the room. He finds her eating pineapple greedily. He tells her to take off her pants. He grabs her up and screams in her face – NOW. She obeys.
He strokes her hair and she says he lost his dick 70 years ago then asks what he can do. He says she’ll be surprised. He puts red lipstick on her and has her plump her lips. Eichorst says Gut. He turns her around and sits on the floor behind her. He tells her to spread her legs and bend over. His tongue things come out and she turns and sprays him with mace then kicks him in the face. She gets the key from him and unchains herself then runs out.
She runs down the hall then falls hard. She has to pull a nail out of her foot. She finds the end of the corridor bricked up and goes another way. She heads for an elevator but it seems dead. There’s another brick wall and she asks what this is. She limps and runs. Fet, Eph and Nora are in some inactive tunnels that FDR used when he came to New York so no one would see him in his wheelchair. They decide it looks like a Strigoi passage and hurry.
Eichorst washes the mace out of his eye and growls. He pulls out a contact and can see better. It’s clouded from the mace. Dutch hobbles on and Eichorst comes calling for her. Fet and the others make it into the building. Eichorst tells her to stop running and says there is nowhere to go. She finds some stairs and heads down. She runs down flight after flight. Eichorst follows her to the stairs and says he can smell her shampoo and blood and says he’s almost there.
Fet, Eph and Nora run up the stairs. Dutch hits a brick wall and screams in frustration. She hears footsteps and growling and knows Eichorst is close. She screams at him to get away from her. He has her cornered. They hear her screaming and rush up. Eichorst thanks her for an engaging chase. He says most days eating is just a duty but he is looking forward to making a meal of her. She says she hopes he chokes. He slaps her and knocks her down.
Fet finds the brick wall as Eichorst drags Dutch up the stairs by the foot. Fet is on the other side of the brick wall trying to break through. He yells – I’m coming for you. Fet gets one brick knocked out then pulls out a stick of dynamite and tells them to get back. He lights it and they step out of the way. It blows and they head through the hole he blew open. They hear Dutch screaming as Eichorst drags her. Fet throws a silver grenade and Eichorst has to let her go. She runs to Dutch who picks her up.
Eph and Nora go after Eichorst then come back to Fet holding a crying Dutch. Eichorst is in the subway tunnel with smoke coming off him from the grenade. He screams in rage. We see Eichorst back in the day in his Nazi SS uniform. Helga told some other Nazis that Eichorst knows her and they ask if he had a relationship with her. Eichorst says they worked in the same office for seven months. He says she was accused of stealing and fired. Helga says it’s not true. Eichorst gives her a small smile as she cries.
We see Eichorst enjoying the respect on the streets from others. His ex-boss Oscar is there and has to kiss up to him. Then we see him turn down a street and he sees the bodies of Helga and her parents hanging dead from a wooden bannister. One of his superiors is there and he has to act smug and smirk at the bodies but when he turns his back, you can see he’s sad. Fet holds a crying Dutch while Eph drives them back home. He strokes her hair gently as she sobs. Nora and Eph shar e alook.
On Roosevelt Island, in Manhattan, Rudyard takes a cab to a check point. He says he’s there to see Alonso Creem and says the Cardinal sent him. The guard radios to Alonso who says to let him in. Rudyard takes the book to Alonso who says the Cardinal is dead. Rudyard says this is likely why he died. Alonso asks if he has the Lumen and asks to see it. Rudyard says he needs money and safe passage. Alonso says to let him see it and he hands it over. Alonso unwraps it and looks at the silver cover. He smiles and tells Rudyard they can do business.
