Lea Michele on Glee We knew it was a great, great pilot, but there hasn’t been a successful TV show that has music in it for, like, ever,’ she gushes. ‘Ally McBeal did it kind of; Fame. But for years it hasn’t been done.’ Then adds: ‘What I love about our show is that it opens your eyes to a lot of things without being preachy.’ I feel very equal to my cast and I feel like I couldn’t do what I do without them’ – but, as someone on the Marie Claire shoot pointed out, if Glee is the new Friends then Lea Michele is the new Jennifer Aniston.
‘Glee has made me feel beautiful,’ says Michele, to underline the point. ‘Now when people say that I don’t feel like they’re lying. Glee has shown me that I am beautiful, that I can be beautiful no matter what I look like, what my weight is.’ It seems churlish at this stage to mention the steamed cabbage diet and the fact she has lost a few pounds recently. ‘I grew up in a community where what I looked like wasn’t considered beautiful and then I work on this show that proves it doesn’t matter what you look like, that you’re beautiful and that beauty is on the inside and… so, yeah, I’m thankful.’

‘What about your tattoos? She has nine, each chronicling a significant milestone in her life. The first was a butterfly, on her back, at 16. There’s one for Spring Awakening, another, Imagine, after the John Lennon song, a gold star for Rachel Berry. Still, she’s quick to remind me: ‘I don’t have like a kiss on my butt or anything! They’re all tiny. I mean, you saw me in the shoot today, I was practically nude. Did you see any? No. I’m telling you, I have nine. All so, so, so little.’
