The White Princess begins tonight with Margaret Beaufort (Michelle Fairley) returning to court with the boy everyone presumes to be Richard, Duke of York (Patrick Gibson). King Henry VII (Jacob Collins-Levy) approaches his wife, Queen Lizzie (Jodie Comer) telling her that any fool can see he doesn’t look anything like a York. Lizzie follows Henry and they both dress in their royal robes and crowns as the court yard awaits the boy’s fate.
Maggie Pole (Rebecca Benson) watches Lizzie’s face as Henry’s mother, Margaret and her ladies enter the room before the boy is brought in. Richard is thrown to the floor, but when he rises he stares Lizzie directly in the face. Henry tells him he will enjoy executing him for all the lives lost over a peasant boy.
Richard tells Henry he should kill him if he wishes to stay upon his throne. He continues to say he is the son of King Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth and the rightful king of England. He orders Henry to stand aside and hand him the crown that was stolen from him or he will face the righteous wrath from the Almighty God.
Henry claps his hands, saying it was a fine performance and he has missed his calling. Henry tells the boy he will ask his Queen what to do with him since he claims her to be his sister. When he asks her if he is her kin, she pauses for a moment and says her brothers are both dead.
Henry scoffs saying this wasn’t the welcome Richard imagined and says until he decides his fate, he will make him a servant at his court and his job will to tend to the King’s robes that he covets so much. Maggie is in utter shock as Lizzie walks out of the room on Henry’s arm.
Henry’s mother, Margaret says the boy is an enemy of the crown and Henry must kill him but Henry feels he isn’t going to follow his orders and wants to parade the boy through the streets making his supporters know he is a fraud. Lizzie fears Margaret may be right; but Henry says killing him makes him a martyr and if he keeps him alive, he will be looked upon as the maggot he really is.
Margaret meets with Bishop Morton (Kenneth Cranham) demanding they find the boy’s wife and child as they are valuable to them. Since her husband is now considered a traitor, Rome agrees they may no longer seek sanctuary in the church; Margaret suggests they get her to come by her own choice.
Lizzie catches Maggie telling her sons about the boy and that he must truly believe he is their uncle; Lizzie calls for her boys Harry (Woody Norman) and Arthur (Billy Barratt) when Maggie asks her if she has spoken to him? Lizzie says the boy is nothing like her brother and leaves the room.
When they prepare to parade the boy through the village, Maggie takes her son and tells her husband she will not be part of this, and he can inform everyone they are unwell. Lizzie tells Prince Arthur, Duke of York that they chose someone who looked like a York to add to the deception; that he is an enemy to their country and will try to take what is his. Arthur smiles at his mother as they ride their horses with Richard behind them.
The villagers throw food and stones at the boy, while King Henry smiles. Richard tells them he doesn’t blame them for not believing him, and his sister is a natural queen and he will take no pleasure in taking that from her. He attempts to get Lizzie to speak to him, explaining what their mother did for him; but before she can respond, Margaret orders to get him back to the castle.
Lizzie rushes to her room, closing it before her ladies could follow. She looks at the York ring on her finger and cries. Meanwhile, the boy is brought to the King’s robe room, where they joke to Margaret that he can now play king to his heart’s content; Margaret is not pleased. On the River Thames, London Margaret of Burgundy-Duchess (Joanne Whalley) says she needs to send a message to someone and is quickly escorted inside.
Lizzie watches out the window when Maggie arrives, surprised to see Cathy Gordon (Amy Manson) and her baby in the court yard. Lizzie wants to know why she is there. A servant tells the boy to hurry up and come, but he is uncertain of the reason.
Margaret, Henry’s mother quickly greets Cathy and tells her to courtesy to the Queen, when she asks about her husband. Richard is told to clean the dung off the street and when he is done, he is to bring a noble lady’s belongings inside. Cathy is shocked to see them push him into the pile of dung.
Lizzie tells Cathy his claims were false and isn’t her brother while Margaret tells her their marriage is annulled since they married under false pretenses. Richard is surprised to learn his wife and son are at court. Margaret says Cathy is to resume her maiden name and her son is considered a bastard.
Cathy is free to be their guest but if she chooses to leave, she must leave the child and return alone to Scotland; two midwives take the baby and Lizzie visibly upset leaves the room. Cathy demands to see her husband. Richard is reunited with Cathy but is angry that she didn’t listen to him and stay away. Henry is upstairs listening to their conversation with his mother.
Richard wants to give up his claim to the throne so he can have his wife and son but Cathy objects. Richard apologizes to her; when Henry and his mother step back she tells him that he has cards to play but Henry struggles with Richard even holding the lie to his own wife.
Margaret says he is a fake but Henry wonders about his claims about a Tudor killing the boys in the tower. She swears it was King Richard who killed the boys to clear his way to the throne, but it is clear Henry questions her claims.
Lizzie holds Henry in bed as they talk about breaking Richard and Cathy’s marriage. He tells Lizzie she will take Cathy as her Lady as that will appease the Scots; he then asks Lizzie about her brother and what he was like. Henry wants to know what was he wearing and what was said the day his soldiers came for him.
As they prepare to go on a hunt, Maggie questions why Henry must wear his crown all the time. Henry turns to Richard and orders him to carry his weapons. When Queen Lizzie begins to ride her horse, Cathy is forced to follow behind her. Henry asks Richard for his long bow and Richard tells him he doesn’t need to do this, as he isn’t his enemy.
Margaret is asked what Henry’s plan is and she says this is a hunt, you shoot your prey. Lizzie is shocked when she sees Margaret with a bow and arrow as well. Maggie tells Cathy that if she is truly there of her own free will, she should leave if she can, as Henry will be rid of Richard soon or do to him what Henry has done to her brother Teddy (Albert de Jongh). Lizzie overhears as Cathy says she knows he is Richard and if she wants to save her brother she would back his claim; Lizzie orders Maggie beside her.
Henry rides beside Cathy asking if she likes to hunt; he tells her she will dine with him that evening but she declines saying she doesn’t have an appetite. Henry says she is without a husband so he will make sure she is taken care of; words that do not please Lizzie, who rides towards Richard. Lizzie questions him, realizing he is her brother, but Henry is shooting more and more arrows at him; Lizzie shouts at Henry to stop.
Richard taunts Henry, who charges at him, but his horse bucks and the crown falls from his head to the ground. Richard retrieves the crown and gives it to Henry while his mother tells the huntsmen to collect their weapons as they are returning home. Maggie, on the other hand, isn’t so lucky as a man grabs her telling her to meet Margaret of Burgundy at midnight.
Lizzie demands to know what Maggie said to Cathy and she lies. Lizzie tells her she wants her to serve as one of her ladies as finding loyalty is very hard. Maggie protests saying she was hoping to return to their home soon; Lizzie says it is too far away and Henry trusts her husband and wants to keep him close. Lizzie questions why she doesn’t want to be near her brother Teddy in the tower?
Richard serves drinks at dinner, and tells Lizzie she looks just like their mother did when their father would dine with his mistress instead of her. Lizzie orders him to stop it, sends her ladies to go be with their husbands and returns to her chambers with her sons.
Maggie arrives to see Margaret of Burgundy learning she wants her to help rescue Richard, the rightful heir to the throne of England. She shares how the laundry boats travel along the river all day long and with Richard in the wardrobe room filled with linens and robes.
Maggie longs for her brother, Teddy to be free but is told they will never let him go and her only hope of freeing him is by putting Richard on the throne. She reminds her they are women and they do what they must do even though none of them are fearless.
Lizzie is furious with Cathy and berates her for spending time with her husband, King Henry. She smacks her in the forehead, asking her if she has an empty head as she can hear the empty chamber echo; Maggie asks her to stop, while Lizzie demands to know if Henry touched her or she touched him. She kicks over a bowl of water and orders Cathy to clean it up.As the royals walk, Henry joyfully announces that he spent quite the night with Lady Catherine; both Richard and Lizzie are angry. Lizzie wants to know why he would do that telling him it is clear they are deeply in love with each other and she would never betray him. Henry says he needs Cathy to turn against him to take away his strength since he leans on her. Henry admits Richard taunts him with his dazzle; he attempts to hold Lizzie but she brushes him off.

During dinner, King Henry demands Lady Catherine dance for him; his mother wants to know what he is doing and Henry reminds her that she gave him cards to play and how would she expect him to play them? Lizzie smirks telling her mother-in-law that it is Cathy who is being dangled like a puppet, but is very annoyed as Margaret says she is beautiful but her son, Henry is very taken by her.
Lizzie is told she must not object to their affair as he is King! Lizzie stands and leaves as Richard tells her not to give into it and let him get to her. Maggie quickly tells Richard there is a plot to rescue him; Lizzie sees them speaking and Richard tells Maggie that he is the king and he is winning.
Lizzie lies alone in her bed chamber, in the middle of the night she gets up and rushes into Henry’s room but he is no where to be found and his bed has not been slept in. The next morning she demands to know if he has had Lady Catherine; telling him he shames and disrespects her as everyone gossips. He says she did the same with her cousin Lady Anne with Richard; she said she loved Richard. Henry asks if she loves the boy; she says they are their burden and they are tearing them apart. She says they need to find a way to deal with them.
Lizzie comes to see the baby, Henry’s mother, Margaret asks if she sees an innocent nephew? Lizzie says no and Margaret says like God they need to see Alpha and Omega; they need to see beyond a baby and to what it represents. She tells Lizzie men are weak and swayed by beauty and women must be stronger; she leaves Lizzie with her thoughts.
Before the throne, Richard is given a letter to read aloud; if he reveals his true identity as the son of a boatman he will live and be no threat to them. Richard refuses, saying he is Prince Richard of York, her brother. Lizzie tells him to read it and he will live while Lady Catherine tells him to not deny his birthright. They are told their son will be raised by a family London, Richard curses them all to hell.
Henry comes to talk to his mother about his people loving Richard more than him. He wants to know what she has done with his child, she tells him not to concern himself, but he doesn’t want to be protected by the truth and wants to know what else he doesn’t know, including what Jasper was about to tell him just before he died.
She says Jasper would have said he loved him and sacrificed his life to protect him and the throne and he must keep it or he will betray Jasper’s memory. He asks her if that were the truth or would he have told him about a game of cards? She holds his face and says she will pray for him.
Lizzie walks in as Maggie is comforting Cathy and telling her the Duchess of Burgundy has plans for them. She wants to know from Lizzie how she could allow Margaret to take their son. Lizzie says Maggie is changing and she doesn’t like who she has become; she once again leaves the room as Maggie says her mother would be ashamed of her.
In the throne room, Richard reads the letter out loud saying he is a boat man’s son and confesses he falsely impersonated the dead Richard, Duke of York. He cries as Margaret says he finally says the truth that he is a Flemish peasant.
Maggie rushes away from her husband, who has learned she has insulted and defied the Queen and she must apologize or they will never let her brother out of the tower. She admits she now knows they will never let Teddy out and she is tired of being a trembling flower and rushes off.
Henry hears voices in the halls of the castle; during dinner he tells his mother that his confession hasn’t changed anything. She suggests he try him for treason but Henry says he is not a traitor and he is sick of it. Lizzie demands Maggie’s apology, who instead asks what will happen to the boy, Richard.
Maggie says she is on Harry and Arthur’s side and reminds Lizzie of a curse she once said about the boys dying in their family. Lizzie says Margaret didn’t kill the boys, King Richard did. Maggie says it is a lie and she only believes it because it gives her comfort; she says if Lizzie believes in the curse it is on her boys as well.
King Henry quickly undresses saying Richard is putting poison in his clothing. He chases after his men and Richard asking him if he wants the crown? He takes off his crown and smashes Richard in the head with it. Henry continues to beat him until the guards pull him off, Lizzie orders them to tend to his wounds. Henry is upset that the more he hates Richard, the more he is loved. Lizzie says he is king and this is madness that Henry would fear they will kill him and their son.
Lizzie tells Maggie Cathy can visit her husband Richard and gives her the key. Maggie rushes to see Richard, admitting she believes him. She struggles to the man down the hallway when Lizzie arrives in the robe room and sets it on fire. She runs to Cathy and Richard and tells them they need to rush now and give up their claim if they want to live.
Lizzie yells at him to go and be safe, but won’t admit he is her brother. She promises to get their son back to them. She tells Richard to come with her and Cathy can join him tomorrow. She tells him to decide. Margaret tells Lizzie it was God’s work, that Richard started the fire himself.
Richard decides not to run and makes it out of the burning castle saying he is Prince Richard, son of King Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth; he’s lived through battle, walked through fire and he will have the throne of England. Lizzie cries
