The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) gambit will serve to push the boundaries of Niktor’s quasi-personal relationship. Mrs. Newman proved that she was serious about living separate personal lives, even though she and Victor (Eric Braeden) agreed to reunite.
The Moustache will appear to be fine with Nikki’s dalliance, when he learns of it. But underneath he’ll be outraged. Niktor was and likely will always be Y&R’s most famous couple. Their many marriages, breakups and all in between can rightly be tagged as epic.
Executive producer and head writer Mal Young intriguingly opted to write this couple in a different direction recently. There was no divorce after Nikki left the Ranch. Instead, both parties met after a period apart and literally negotiated the terms of their reconciliation.
Each half of this duo logically believes that the other can now serve as a marital partner, while behind closed doors doors they are merely colleagues who’ve agreed to co-habit under the same well-lined roof for their own best interests, that of their family and of course, Newman Enterprises.
The levers of power are more easily controlled if Niktor appears to be solid, or so goes the combined thoughts of this apparently faux husband and wife team. But their compartmentalizing of the most deeply personal reality will produce mental consequences.
Y&R fans will be watching to see if Victor does pursue Ashley (Eileen Davidson), as Nikki expects. Clearly, Mrs. Newman’s jaunt with Arturo (Jason Canela) can be viewed as, and was almost certainly a preemptive strike at Victor’s heart.
Everything this couple does has been about each other, or someone, or something connected to either person since they first fell in love in the early 1980’s. So, Nikki and Victor may have actually convinced themselves and believe that they’ve convinced their still-significant other, along with those who’ve been made aware that this arrangement will work. But Niktor is a love link like no other in Genoa City’s history.
Nikki and Victor will act on impulse, or planned persuasion. They’ll wear a heavy mask while pretending whatever personal matters develop with others won’t impact their negotiated deal. Then, when a crisis arises, as it surely will, both people will return to the Niktor nest, admitting how they really felt about whatever hurts were inflicted and pledging their feelings anew.
Love birds fly together from first contact through forever. Niktor was, is and will continue to be Y&R’s greatest couple. This pair is actually made all the more indelible by what’s happening right now. Kudos to Young and his team for this current, inventive take that adds to Nikki and Victor’s enduring story.
