The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Justin Hartley (Adam) could be primed for a mini-reprisal. As Melissa Claire Egan’s (Chelsea) imminent departure from the cast gets set to play out, a stunning exit would be most appropriate. Yes, it’s time for Adam and Chelsea to reunite even if that means no full-time return of the presumed dead character in question.
There is a problem with this speculative scenario, however. What about Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen)? Chelsea couldn’t exactly bolt from Genoa City with Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois) without also taking Adam’s other son, Christian, with her.
So a lead-in to Chelsea’s write-out that results in a Hartley cameo would have to first include the long-awaited reveal of Christian’s paternity. Nick (Joshua Morrow) would surely be devastated. So, some planned plot time would be needed to smooth this complicated scenario.
Chelsea’s defrauding of Fenmore’s would then likely be revealed as some type of pre-planned effort to amass enough liquid cash to be used to fund a renewed life with her undead husband. That then assumes Chelsea somehow came to know that Adam was never killed, they made contact in the recent past and have been coordinating these efforts behind Nick’s back. Plausible, but surely some believability holes would need to be filled by the writing staff in this instance.
Whether Hartley secretly recorded scenes or not, all attempts to eye-poke this proposal would miss the point. Unless there’s some unknown clause in his This Is Us contract, Hartley wouldn’t be precluded from a return Y&R cameo. His NBC-based filming schedule would have also allowed time for a one-off, or two-off scene sequence as well.
However, said scenario would serve to only momentarily whet Chadam fan’s appetites. Most supporters of this couple, or those who simply want to see the Adam character written back into the story, would be subsequently hollowed by Adam’s followed disappearance from the show if he, Chelsea and the kids then left town to live wherever.
The return of Adam to Y&R would surely provide a brief, but electric jolt for dedicated viewers and for those who would tune in on the day, or days of Hartley’s daytime revival. Egan’s public statements have confirmed that she’s not intending to leave forever, leaving a return option open. That real life point blends with fiction to create various other possibilities as this effective actor approaches her last shoot (for now).
